World-renowned archivist, author and blues educator Stefan Grossman learned from the greats during the folk and blues revival of the 1960s in the United States. He appeared on a few records in the mid-60s before releasing his debut album, How To Play Blues Guitar (Elektra, 1966). As with Jimi Hendrix, his arrival in the United Kingdom marked the real beginning of his career. “I was here to see everything,” Stefan said in a 1975 interview, “and at that point I had never played solo. I went to see the Young Tradition at a club. They said, “Why don’t you play?” I did, and it was very entertaining. I got good reviews for that guest appearance…. I was playing music 26 hours a day, but it took me a long time to realize I was a musician.”Two albums for Fontana (1968-69) were followed by seven for Transatlantic (1970-77), then several for his own label Kicking Mule and for Shanachie (1978-90). Between 1968-87, Stefan lived in the UK and later in Italy, where he wrote books, recorded records and toured exclusively in the UK and Europe. in 1987, he returned to the U.S. and retired from touring for many years to focus on his label, Stefan Grossman’s Guitar Workshop, which remains the gold standard for audio-visual instructional material on folk, blues and jazz playing styles, along with an impressive catalog of historic performances

This repertory box set does for Stefan what he has done for many others: It brings together rare and previously unreleased performances and collects them for posterity and pure enjoyment. Curated in collaboration with the artist by Bert Jansch biographer Colin Harper and annotated by legendary British folk journalist Robin Denselow (whose notes accompanied Stefan’s very first live album in 1973), Stefan Grossman Live at the BBC covers his “European era” from 1968 – 1987 with four hours of BBC studio sessions and concert recordings, almost all previously unreleased

An Alexis Korner session from 1968 shows Stefan as a blues scholar, while two John Peel Sunday concerts from 1971 show him as a rollicking ringmaster in a countercultural circus. The later concerts show Stefan as an elder statesman of the ’60s folk revival, with his dust-dry humor and playing better than ever. This 4CD set is an exhilarating alternative anthology of Stefan Grossman’s rowdiest and most important years, packed with sensational solo performances and duets with a circle of his greatest colleagues from the world of acoustic guitar – including John Renbourn, Duck Baker and Jo-Ann Kelly
