Among the instruments that found their way into art music in the first decades of the 18th century is the horn. Usually the story of the Bohemian imperial count Franz Anton von Sporck (1662–1738) is told. He became ac- quainted with the instrument in 1680 during a visit to the court of Louis XIV (1638–1715). He sent two of his servants to France to learn how to play the instrument, after which – according to the well-established narrative – horn playing spread throughout Central Europe. Whether and how the horn came to Germany via other routes remains to be seen. The lack of guild-like ties (as with trumpeters and timpanists) made their integration into instrumental ensembles easier – both among the town pipers, in student groups like Collegia musica and in court orchestras. Around 1720, hornists were represented in most German court orchestras, but also in many city music organisations. Common indications such as corno da caccia or cor de chasse refer to their origin as signal instruments. Hornists initially played other in- struments as well, but with the increasing demands and more specific solo tasks, a tendency towards specialisation soon emerged. These changes are primarily documented in surviving and dated scores and performance materials. This raises the question as to which specific instruments were used and which playing techniques were used for the performance of these compositions.
