Strut Records presents “Inside The Light World”, a musical treasure from the extensive discography of the enigmatic Sun Ra: Sun Ra Meets The OVC”. This extraordinary album unveils previously unreleased recordings from 1986 for the first time and represents a unique chapter in the Sun Ra catalog.

Developed in the mid-1970s by forward-thinking technological innovator and rocket scientist Bill Sebastian, the Outer Space Visual Communicator (OVC) was a groundbreaking invention. Instead of producing conventional sound, this keyboard-driven ‘instrument’ harnessed the power of light, casting mesmerizing kaleidoscopic, multi-coloured patterns on a screen that hung above the performers on stage. Ra first performed with the idiosyncratic fractal light projector in the late 70s, and in 1986 two grainy VHS tapes emerged featuring Ra Calling Planet Earth” and “Sunset On The Nile”, both of which were accompanied by the radiant light painting of the OVC.”I was curious about these performances,” explains Irwin Chusid, the administrator of the Sun Ra catalog. “I couldn’t locate these great versions and wondered where they came from. I discovered that not only was Bill Sebastian still alive, but that he was still in Boston developing advanced versions of the OVC that now incorporated virtual reality (VR) technology.”

Sebastian and Chusid set about the difficult task of compiling the session tapes from Sebastian’s archives. These recordings, which took place on August 25, 1986 at Mission Control Studios in Westford, Massachusetts, were originally spontaneous and never intended for an official album release. Although the tape overdubs yielded remarkable material, the recordings remained in an unmixed state, prompting Chusid to collaborate with engineer Joe Lizzi. Together they set out to reconstruct each track with meticulous precision.

The end result is a true revelation, with exceptional performances from the Arkestra. This release reveals previously unheard interpretations of Sun Ra classics such as “Love In Outer Space”, “El Is A Sound Of Joy” and “Calling Planet Earth”. It also features a complete performance of “Discipline 27-II”, making it a musical gem for fans and collectors alike.
