The Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists have been performing historically-informed Handel for almost 50 years, and are “unbeatable in the performance of this repertoire” (Scherzo).

A stellar cast of soloists joined “the best choir in the world” (Trouw), and brought MCO’s trademark immediacy and drama to Handel’s festive masterpiece for the first time in over three decades. MCO’s patron HM King Charles III was in attendance and experienced the thrilling conclusion of the European tour at our London home of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

This performance replicated the rare version of the Messiah performed at Covent Garden in 1752 – the final Messiah Handel fully directed, and the only time a soprano, contralto, tenor and bass were used as soloists. This format was brought back to life by acclaimed soloists Ana Vieira Leite, Dame Sarah Connolly, Andrew Staples and William Thomas.

Composed in 1680, Proserpine marks the reunion of Lully and Quinault after the scandal surrounding Isis (1677). Set in the splendour of Saint-Germain, the work offers a mythological mirror to the Dauphin’s wedding. In it, Lully revolutionises his art: the orchestra becomes the driving force of the drama while the voices gain in expressive intensity. Under the baton of Christophe Rousset, Les Talens Lyriques revive this gem in which the fate of a captive queen and the splendour of restored peace unite in immortal harmony.

Recorded in the middle of a European tour in December 2024, this release marks the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists debut of acclaimed French conductor Christophe Rousset. Rousset brings his Gallic elegance and refinement to Charpentier’s Baroque Christmas music – the motet In Nativitatem and the Messe de minuit pout Noel, along with the instrumental noels, or Christmas carols, that form the basis of Charpentier’s unique mass.

Little is known about Johann Sebastian Bach’s sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord. Are they early works or products of his late period? Do they form a cycle, or are they a collection of independent pieces? Long-time musical partners Atsushi Sakai and Christophe Rousset set out to record these enigmatic works, in which the gamba, as so often in Bach, becomes at once the voice of lamentation and an instrument of dialogue with the divine.
