Walter Gieseking, Herbert von Karajan – Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos. 4 & 5 “Emperor” (2026)

The few recorded performances left behind by Walter Gieseking and Herbert von Karajan unequivocally demonstrate a clear musical rapport, and one can only regret that it was cut short by the pianist’s untimely death. In these Beethoven concertos, their shared vision – based on respect for the original score, a quest for architectural balance and clarity of sound – works wonders. The young Karajan’s rhythmic precision and Gieseking’s refined playing make this recording one of the first great modern benchmarks.

Karajan’s affinity for Sibelius reached its zenith in this celebrated late-1970s recording. Moving away from mid-century polish, he guides the Berlin Philharmonic into dark, austere territories. The Fourth Symphony sounds strikingly modern and unsparing, while a chilling Tapiola evokes the vast, primeval mysteries of the Nordic forests with terrifying orchestral weight.

Japanese SACD Reissue 2012 | EMI Classics / Esoteric Company, Japan # ESSE 9074~6

The reissue of classical music masterpieces by ESOTERIC has attracted a lot of attention, both for its uncompromising commitment to recreating the original master sound, and for using hybrid Super Audio CD (SACD) technology to improve sound quality. This series marks the first hybrid SACD release of historical recording selections that have been mainstays of the catalog since their initial release.

The criterion of re-mastering is to faithfully capture the quality of the original master. ESOTERIC’s flag ship D/A converters, model D-01VU, Rubidium master clock generator model G-0Rb and ESOTERIC MEXCEL interconnect cables and power cords, were all used for this re-mastering session. This combination of highly advanced technology greatly contributed to capturing the high quality sound of the original master.

Japanese DSD Remastered Reissue ‘2019 / Esoteric Company, Japan # ESSG-90147~49

Recordings of such important music entities as the Vienna Philharmonic and Herbert von Karajan are always going to be of importance, and this set is no exception. It highlights a conductor in the twilight of his career with repertoire he was acutely familiar with, and had recorded many, many times. Japanese Esoteric label have produced to be the definitive issue of such recordings. This recent reissue project by Esoteric, is admittedly a little out of left field. Of the many recordings receiving the audiophile treatment in recent years, one does not hear much about recordings (especially digital) from the 1980s. Listening to a few, one does not have to wonder why. The early digital technology labels were using in the 1980s yielded somewhat unpleasing results to my ears, with recordings that sound rather glassy, with dull strings and somewhat boxy and unrealistic sounding wind instruments. Sure, the dynamics could be stellar thanks to the CD and its lack of potential for tracking errors, but phrasing and texture were sacrificed, at least in the early days. I do not have an original CD or LP of this recording to compare this SACD release to, but I do have a few 80s digital Deutsche Grammophon LPs, and if those are anything to compare, Esoteric has certainly worked wonders with the engineering.

According to their own liner notes, this set was mastered at 96/24bit from an original digital master that was done at Redbook 44/16bit. Getting a good sounding recording on a DSD format out of such a low resolution master is certainly a daunting task.

So, how does this set sound? Well, pretty dark, which is no surprise coming from a Karajan recording, that was his usual standard, especially in his later years. The dynamics are pretty impressive, with the climaxes and percussion hits sounding rather earth-shaking. The problem I run into, is that for some reason the loud sections sound rather boomy and lacking in definition. For instance, whenever the percussion are prominent, the boomyness takes over the soundstage and blurs out any definition in the brass, or orchestra as a whole, you no longer hear instruments, but instead you here “loud”. Also the strings lack the texture here that make them sound like real vibrating instruments in a hall. Particularly, the starts of notes or phrases kind of “fade” in rather than beginning. Finally, in the big sections, the winds sound rather hard, there is a real digital graininess or sibilance that makes the sound rather fatiguing to listen to at concert volume.

All of these problems, I doubt are the fault of Esoteric. It is a label that has consistently put care into its masterings, and this is certainly the best 80s digital recording I have ever heard from Deutsche Grammophon. That being said, I don’t think this recording can escape from the limitations of its birth, which is a harsh early digital sound, mixed with a lack of realistic instrument timbre, particularly noticeable in the string and woodwind sounds. How far can one take such a limited original product? I think this might be the answer to that question. – Review by audiophilia-com

A wonderful reading it is, as authoritative as its predecessors and every bit as well played but somehow more profound, more humane, more lovable if that is a permissible attribute of an interpretation of this Everest among symphonies. […] It is the sense of the music being in the hearts and minds and collective unconscious of Karajan and every one of the hundred and more players that gives this performance its particular charisma and appeal.

Richard Osborne, Gramophone, October 1989Recorded the year before he died, this might stand as a spiritual testament to Karajan’s relationship with this work. ~ Record Review / James Jolly, Gramophone (London) / 01. December 2005

Herbert von Karajan identified with the 8th perhaps more intensely than with any other score in the repertory; it is significant that in February 1989, in what proved to be his last performances outside of Austria, he brought it to New York with the VPO & made it the centrepiece of a 3-concert engagement.

The air of finality was heavy at those concerts, & Karajan, determined to go out as a conqueror, did just that. This 1988 recording comes very close to recapturing the experience of that live performance. Karajan’s careful pacing gives the 8th time to unfurl, allowing the mystery & tenderness of Bruckner’s vision to radiate from some place deep within the paroxysmal intensity of the symphony’s argument. The cumulative effect is shattering. Throughout, the Viennese play beyond their limits, as if their lives depended on it. The recorded sound is vivid & of very wide dynamic range.

. . . a wonderful reading it is, as authoritative as its predecessors & every bit as well played but somehow more profound, more humane, more lovable . . . at its best, the recording surges with an almost animal impulse that recreates the pull of a live performance & puts most recordings – by anyone, including Karajan himself in the shade.
~ Richard Osborne, Peter Quantrill, Christian Hoskins, Gramophone, March 2016

. . . this 1988 Karajan account holds a special place . . . it was in the 8th Symphony that, for me, Karajan achieved the greatest recording of his last decade . . . Whether one comes to this performance as a doubter or believer, an impalpable ‘something’ runs through it that no other modern recording has.
~ Huntley Dent, Fanfare, August 2016

Karajan was associated with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London from the early 1950s and made recordings with this orchestra for EMI. From 1959, Karajan also started recording with the Berlin Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO) for Decca. At that time, the recording industry was gaining momentum because of newly introduced stereophonic technology and consequently Karajan began to dominate the market. In particular, Decca’s recordings, which were made with the VPO in collaboration with the great producer John Culshaw, resulted in many remarkable tracks for the diverse orchestral compositions including pioneering recordings of “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and “Planets” and for complete operas with superb musicians and vocalists, in addition to the standard symphony recordings of the time. Among Decca’s recordings, ESOTERIC has produced a coupling of Dvorák’s Eighth Symphony and Brahms’ Third Symphony, recorded in 1961, to offer two highly admired performances on a single CD.The reissuing of the Decca masterpiece series has attracted a lot of attention, both for its uncompromising commitment to recreating the original master recording and for using our hybrid Super Audio CD/CD re-mastering technology to improve sound quality. This series marks the first hybrid SA-CD/CD release of two selections that have been mainstays of the Decca catalog since their initial release on LP, later making their way on to CD. These new re-mastered audio versions feature newly created DSD master.

Herbert von Karajan conducts this performance of Tchaikovsky’s Six Symphonies by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Although Karajan recorded the last three symphonies many times, he did not turn to the first three until the end of the 1970s. No doubt the reason these early symphonies sound so fresh is because the Berlin orchestra was not over-familiar with them – this belied by the sheer refinement of the orchestral playing. Recorded at the Philharmonie between October 1975 and February 1979, Karajan’s Berliner Philharmoniker cycle is presented on three SHM-SACD, mastered from the analogue recordings, transferred & edited in PCM, then converted to DSD.

Say what you want about the egomaniacal Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan, he was far & away the best postwar interpreter of German composer Richard Strauss’ megalomaniacal Ein Heldenleben. In this 1959 Deutsche Grammophon recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Karajan approaches the work as a portrait painted in sound of the artist as a young world conqueror. Though Karajan draws playing of tremendous fire & daring out of the Berlin musicians & though Deutsche Grammophon captures the performance in immediate stereo sound, the real hero of this Hero’s Life is Karajan himself. He has the measure of the score, knows when to apply pressure & when to pull back, when to let the brass go & when to reign them in, when to let the harmonies bloom & when to cut them off. But more importantly, Karajan believes in the music. Other postwar conductors could give convincing performances of Ein Heldenleben — one thinks, of course, of Fritz Reiner & the Chicago Symphony’s high-powered 1954 RCA recording — but Karajan isn’t performing the work: he’s living it. The sweep & swagger of the opening theme, the imperious power of the battle music, the expansive monumentality of the closing pages: this isn’t an act for Karajan; this is life itself.

Berliner Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan – Beethoven: The Symphonies (1963) [Reissue 2003] [SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC]

Karajan: Beethoven Symphonies (1963) is a set of studio recordings made in 1961 and 1962 by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan. It is the second of four cycles of Beethoven’s nine symphonies that von Karajan conducted, and the first of three for the German record label Deutsche Grammophon. The complete set was first released in 1963 in Europe, and as a result the cycle of symphonies is now generally known as the 1963 cycle.

The cycle is usually now presented across 5 CDs. It is available in 24 bit/96 kHz high definition sound on 6 hybrid SACDs that also containing a rehearsal session for the ninth symphony.Herbert von Karajan recorded Ludwig van Beethoven’s complete symphonies four times, first in the 1950s with the Philharmonia Orchestra on EMI, then on three more occasions with the Berlin Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon. Karajan’s 1963 cycle with Berlin is highly regarded by fans for its consistent interpretations and energetic and emotional playing. Collectors usually rate this set higher than the 1977 and 1985 recordings, also with Berlin on DG, which have been criticized for being somewhat more mechanical in performance and clinical in sound quality. That said, Karajan’s Beethoven is decidedly a product of the mid-20th century, following conventions that tended toward homogenization of orchestral colors, broad pacing, and an exaggerated sense of the heroic, particularly in the Third, Fifth, Seventh, and Ninth. Before the advent of the movement for period performance practices and the wide use of original 18th and 19th century instruments, Karajan’s recordings were widely accepted as the gold standard for Beethoven, though the historically informed interpretations by John Eliot Gardiner, Roy Goodman, and Christopher Hogwood have, by way of comparison, made most of the mainstream versions of Beethoven seem heavy and stodgy. Listeners who grew up with Karajan’s recordings will appreciate this set, though they are likely to own it already.

Sound becomes visible! It pulsates! A quality beyond compare, heard by the world for the very first time. The body employs SHM material, renowned for its exceptional transparency and fluidity. Furthermore, adopting the single-layer (2ch) format that truly brings out DSD’s inherent characteristics, this is the ultimate Super Audio CD series! Whilst period instruments and period performance practice are now mainstream for Baroque music, performed by smaller ensembles, Karajan’s interpretation is richly expressive, fully utilising the singing qualities of a large orchestra. DSD conversion from DG’s analogue master by EBS in August 2011. A Japan-exclusive project.

Herbert von Karajan (German: [ˈhɛʁbɛʁt fɔn ˈka(ː)ʁajan] ⓘ; born Heribert Adolf Ernst Karajan; 5 April 1908 – 16 July 1989) was an Austrian conductor. He was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 34 years. During the Nazi era, he debuted at the Salzburg Festival, with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and during World War II he conducted at the Berlin State Opera. Generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, he was a controversial but dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death. Part of the reason for this was the large number of recordings he made and their prominence during his lifetime. By one estimate, he sold 200 million records.

Taking Karajan’s unparalleled recorded legacy into the 21st century, Warner Classics paid tribute to the maestro on the 25th anniversary of his death July 16, with 20 of his most beloved albums remastered in high-definition quality for exclusive digital release.

At least half of the prolific conductor’s discography was recorded for EMI. His partnership with the label spanned his entire career – from 1946 and the first collaborations with legendary producer Walter Legge, to 1984 just five years before Karajan’s death. The albums feature his beloved Berliner Philharmoniker, which named him ‘conductor for life’, and the London-based Philharmonia founded by Legge, with whom the conductor produced some of his finest recordings.

Wiener Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan – Strauss, J: Die Fledermaus (2025 Remaster) (2025)

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Decca Music Group Ltd.

One of the gems from Decca’s unparalleled opera catalog: To mark the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss’s birth, the label is re-releasing Herbert von Karajan’s 1960 recording of “Die Fledermaus.” A Viennese cast par excellence! Featuring Hilde Gueden, Erika Köth, Walter Berry, Erich Kunz, and the Vienna Philharmonic.

When “Die Fledermaus” premiered on April 5, 1874, Vienna was still traumatized by the Great Crash of 1874. Just a year earlier, the stock market had collapsed, and many Viennese had lost their fortunes. Their need for distraction was all the greater. And that’s what “Die Fledermaus” delivered to them – along with all the hypocrisy of society, its hedonism, its compulsive costumes and masquerades of feigned identities and feelings – a celebration of falsehood as a capitalist utopia of unbridled consumption: “For eternity, always as it is today! If we still remember it tomorrow…”

“Delicately demonstrated with agile voices, Viennese flair, and Karajan-esque gala interludes.” (FonoForum)

https://www.universal-music.co.jp/herbert-von-karajan/products/ucgg-9230/

With this audiophile edition, the Deutsche Grammophon, on the occasion of the 30th Death of Herbert von Karajans, the legendary recordings of the symphonies 1-6 by Pyotr Ilyitsch Tchaikowski. In addition to the 4 CDs, the high-quality edition also includes a 24-bit / 96 kHz remastering on a Blu-ray audio disc. Although Karajan recorded the last three symphonies together with the Berlin Philharmonic many times, he held back until the late 1970s with recordings of the symphonies 1-3. The reason why these early symphonies sound so fresh is undoubtedly that the Berlin Philharmonic played this repertoire significantly less often, especially notable is the intricacies of orchestral sound worked out to perfection. The cycle recorded at the Philharmonie from October 1975 to February 1979 with the Berlin Philharmonic under Karajan is complemented on Blu-ray audio disc by the Slavic March and the Capriccio Italy, both recordings taken in October 1966 at the Jesus Christ Church. On the occasion of the 30th Herbert von Karajans presents Deutsche Grammophon the legendary cycle of the Bruckner symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic on 9 CDs, complemented by audiophile remasterings on a Blu-ray audio disc. While the Bruckner Symphonies 1-3 are digitally produced recordings that were specially sampled from the original 16 bit/44.1 kHz to 24 bit/192 kHz for the Blu-ray audio disc, this edition offers a new 24 bit/96 kHz remastering of the Bruckner symphonies 4-9 from the original bands. Karajan’s Bruckner cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic, recorded between January 1975 and January 1981, is a milestone in the history of Bruckner recordings. These recordings testify to the extremely fine feel of this unique maestro and are undoubtedly one of Karajan’s most important recordings – certainly it is also one of the most profound Bruckner interpretations ever. The high-quality edition is rounded off by a 14-page booklet with an essay by Reinhard Beuth in the languages English and German.
