Pontvianne studied saxophone and clarinet at the Conservatory of Noisiel and was then trained at the CNSM Paris.

As a composer, Pontvianne draws on many musical traditions – from Renaissance fairs to Indonesian gamelan to the music of Sonic Youth, Paul Motian or Morton Feldman – and is interested in dealing with “slowness” and exploring an area that can be compared to the “ecology of sound” by Gérard Grisey. He also works as an interpreter in his own groups such as the clarinet quartet WATT (with Antonin-Tri Hoang, Jean Dousteyssier, Jean-Brice Godet), the AUM Grand Ensemble or Abhra. He is one of the founding members of the collective and the label Onze Heures Onze and plays in groups covering various genres, from 1920s swing to modern jazz (as with the Maxime Fougères Trio on Guitar Reflections, experimental rock to the repertoire of new music.
