Quite often, so-called smooth jazz artists who are mindlessly predictable in the studio become a lot more spontaneous and risk-taking on-stage. Playing for themselves instead of pandering to radio, they’re much more inclined to let loose. But Kenny G Live was only a slight improvement over 1986’s Duotones and 1988’s Silhouette, the knee-jerk studio recordings that made him a superstar. Released as both a two-LP set and as a single CD, Kenny G Live contains only a few decent offerings. The saxophonist actually lets loose on the funky “Midnight Motion” and the catchy “I’ve Been Missin’ You,” which he co-wrote with R&B singer Kashif for 1983’s G Force. But he demonstrates how boring, corny, and toothless his playing can be on “Esther,” “Home,” and “Silhouette.” Equally soulless are “Don’t Make Me Wait for Love” (which features the very contrived pop singer Michael Bolton), and two new studio offerings, “Going Home” and “Uncle Al.” Kenny G Live’s weaknesses by far outweigh its strengths, making this a release that should be avoided.

I’m in the Mood For Love…The Most Romantic Melodies of All Time is the third cover album by saxophonist Kenny G. The album reached number 1 on the Contemporary Jazz chart and number 22 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.There are bound to be those who will simply refuse to give Kenny G’s 2006 release, I’m in the Mood for Love, half a chance, and it’s a crying shame. Returning to a purely instrumental approach following At Last…The Duets Album (which featured a great cameo by Chaka Khan), I’m in the Mood for Love is admittedly a lot like Kenny G’s other albums. Like At Last…, this is yet another album’s worth of standards, ranging from torch songs to “Yesterday.” And like every other album Kenny G has made, it’s pop-oriented and ultra-smooth. But the overall feel of this release is a little brassier and a smidgen more big band than usual, and it adds up to some sparkling moments. The title track, “I’m in the Mood for Love,” two-steps along with ease, warmth, and genuine emotion, and it’s a real treat to hear Walter Afanasieff on piano. “The Way You Look Tonight” is refreshingly genteel, and there’s something gratifying in hearing Kenny G belt out “Fly Me to the Moon.” Naturally, there are a few underwhelming moments on the album. Kenny G’s squealing improvisation on “Love Theme from ‘Romeo and Juliet'” is a little over the top, and a few of the arrangements are forgettable, if not a tad silly (the chimes on “If,” for example). But when a slinky-sweet number like “It Had to Be You” comes rolling around, you forget all about it.

Throughout the 1990s, Kenny G was the whipping boy of the jazz world — the instrumentalist who hardcore jazz improvisers loved to bash when the subject of smooth jazz came up. Kenny G’s huge following responded that the attacks were silly and misguided because the saxman was the first to admit that he was primarily a pop instrumentalist and wasn’t pretending to be anything else. True, it was silly for jazz artists to judge Kenny by hard bop standards when hard bop (or even soul-jazz or fusion) was a long way from what he was going for. And Breathless isn’t bad because it’s a pop album or because it’s commercial; it’s bad because of its complete lack of soul, substance or creativity. There’s nothing even remotely tasteful about interchangeable tunes like “Sentimental,” “Forever In Love” and “End of the Night,” all of which are about as bloodless and schlocky as it gets. Always sounding like he’s on automatic pilot, Kenny takes no risks whatsoever and sees to it that one song is as shamelessly contrived as the next. Even the presence of the great R&B crooner Aaron Neville on “Even If My Heart Would Break” can’t save this one-dimensional release. Whether you’re into pop or jazz, Breathless is unlistenable.
