Sacred Journey of Ku-kai is first in a series of albums intended to address personal and global concerns alongside forward-thinking views of spiritual growth. Kitaro has embarked on a spiritual pilgrimage, visiting temples on the island of Shikoku, Japan once undertaken by Buddhist holy man, Ku-kai, more than 1,100 years ago. Sampling bells sounds from each temple, Kitaro distills their essence with inspired musical landscapes.Although the general impression of Kitaro’s music is that it consists almost entirely of undifferentiated space rock synth noodling, the truth is actually a bit more interesting than that. (Which is not to say that there aren’t sections of The Sacred Journey of Ku-Kai that sound like someone taped down random keys on an old synthesizer and then went to get a cup of coffee.) This lengthy piece of program music features plenty of real instruments, particularly woodwinds and percussion, along with bits of birdsong and other nature sounds. Later in the album, unexpected elements like some old-fashioned prog rock electric guitar (on “Flow” and “Evening Sun”) and even the out-of-nowhere appearance of a full choir of Buddhist monks (“Nen”) add further interest to the sound. It’s still an uninterrupted bliss-out, and anyone who requires such subtleties as melody and rhythm in their music will be driven insane, but there’s more to The Sacred Journey of Ku-Kai than the previously uninitiated might expect.

Gaia Onbashira is a musical exploration of respect and how it relates to ancient traditions. Gaia loosely translates to Goddess of the Earth or Mother Earth and Onbashira is a festival that occurs every seven years in Japan. During the Onbashira festival, eight individuals are chosen for spiritually cleansing. The participants ascend a mountain and attempt to spiritually connect with the heavens through the trees. These trees are then allowed to fall down the mountain and eventually become posts and the foundation of a ceremonial shrine. Through these events, these individuals learn to become more in touch with their spirits.

This album is a far-reaching journey that brings together influences of the East and West, past and present, history and future. These tracks resonate with earthly sounds and the history embodied in pre-Columbian wind and percussion instruments.

This event commemorates the 1250th anniversary of the birth of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), a revered Japanese Buddhist monk who founded the Shingon sect of Buddhism. Kobo Daishi is a significant figure in Japanese history, known for bringing back wisdom and cultural practices from the Tang Dynasty to Japan. His teachings and the spiritual practices he established, such as the famous 88-temple pilgrimage in Shikoku, continue to influence Japanese society to this day.

To honor this milestone, a special celebration concert was held featuring performances by Kitaro and Hiroki Okano. The concert took place at Zentsuji, the birthplace of Kobo Daishi, located on the island of Shikoku, Japan

A notable aspect of the celebration was a special calligraphy dedication by Fuyoh Kobayashi, a calligrapher who contributed to the event by offering a unique and spiritually significant piece of calligraphy. The event was not only a musical tribute but also a cultural and spiritual expression of gratitude toward Kobo Daishi for his enduring legacy. The concert captures the essence of the celebration and the deep reverence felt for Daishi’s contributions to Japanese culture and spirituality.

Kitaro’s score for The Soong Sisters, the story of three sisters who grew up in pre-communist China, were educated in America, and ultimately married some of China’s most powerful men, mixes Eastern and Western melodies and instruments into sweeping, often romantic pieces like “Dr. Sun and Ching-Ling” and the title track. The score also shows a surprising amount of variety, moving from tense, percussive tracks such as “Man on Fire” to lively, melodic pieces like “Waltz and War.” Very little of the new age sound that Kitaro crafts in his albums appears in the score, although the soaring melodies of “The Bonfire” and “The Scroll is Read” share an affinity with his main work. A highly dramatic score, The Soong Sisters is the most successful when it focuses more on its Eastern roots, but overall should please most film music fans, as well as most people who enjoy Asian-inspired music.

It is Kitaro’s intention that his message of peace through music will inspire and unify us universally in global and spiritual co-existence. “The wars of the world don’t come from outer space. People create them, people who have a war within themselves. I want to create music that eases that war within.” — Kitaro
