An album born out of pure inspiration as well as social necessity. Molina, Talbot and Lofgren kept recording their original songs, each with other musicians and in various locations during the pandemic years. They were forced to change from working as a trio with Neil Young, and used that opportunity to see what their new individual configurations would lead to.Crazy Horse by another name is Talbot, Molina, Lofgren & Young, the group who released their debut All Roads Lead Home in 2023. The genesis of the album lies in the COVID-19 pandemic: isolated at home, Ralph Molina, Billy Talbot, and Nils Lofgren all wrote new material, eventually getting a chance to bring these sessions to life around the same time they supported Neil Young on his 2021 album Barn. Young is a presence on All Roads Lead Home–he contributes a live solo version of “Songs of the Seasons,” which debuted on Barn–but the focus is squarely on the other three members of Crazy Horse, who all contribute three songs a piece. Where other, earlier Crazy Horse albums tend to lumber as the group shoulders the burden of heavy volume, All Roads Lead Home is relatively light on its feet, relying on interplay over amplification. There’s a sweet, nostalgic air blowing through these ten songs, present both in the light melodies and open-hearted lyrics. All Roads Lead Home is clearly the work of old hippies: love and peace are placed at the forefront, buttressed by shaggy harmonies and ragged harmonies. Talbot’s songs tend to ramble a bit, Molina lingers on matters of the heart, while Lofgren’s songs are tight and affecting, lacking the loose ends of his colleagues. Mess is part of the appeal of Crazy Horse, whether they’re heard with Young or on their own, so it feels right that All Roads Lead Home occasionally feels as if the sum is less than the individual parts: these are old friends not so much joining forces as they are grooving on the same wavelength. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Young Shakespeare is a live album and concert film from American-Canadian folk rock musician Neil Young recorded in 1971, and released on March 26, 2021. Recorded three days after Live at Massey Hall 1971, during the Journey Through the Past Solo Tour.Neil Young, nugget #776544. With Young Shakespeare, the Loner unearths a stunning concert recorded at the Shakespeare Theater in Stratford, Connecticut on January 22, 1971, three days after the essential Live at Massey Hall 1971 released in 2007, performances from his Journey Through the Past Solo Tour. The Canadian legend’s website boldly declares that Young Shakespeare is better than Massey Hall, describing it as calmer and less flashy, having been recorded in a less prestigious venue than Massey Hall. For Young, it ranks as “the best ever, because it defines the era”. It’s an utterly apt description, with the songs and themes here capturing the dreams and nightmares shared by his generation (he was just 26). The sheer quality of the tracklisting also helps push this album into the legend zone – just read the titles! Tell Me Why, Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done, Ohio, Dance Dance Dance, Cowgirl in the Sand, A Man Needs a Maid/Heart of Gold, Journey Through the Past, Don’t Let It Bring You Down, Helpless, Down by the River and Sugar Mountain feature Young’s guitar or piano and utterly perfect vocals. Above all, that stark nudity highlights the power of his lyrics and the beauty of these melodies. – Marc Zisman

Aptly, the album is heavy and distressed, brimming with electrifying tension. Even its sweet-sounding opening track, ‘Quit’, features the refrain, ‘Don’t say you love me’. ‘Standing in the Light of Love’ and ‘Goin’ Home’ let the Horse off the tether in fields of overdriven guitar; an out-of-work logger grapples with his faith on the breakneck ‘Timberline’; and on ‘Gateway of Love’, Young dreams of a less painful future over a hypnotizing 10 minutes, leading into the somber, brokedown ‘How Ya Doin’?’ The songwriter sums up the album best during its shadowy finale ‘Boom Boom Boom’: ‘All I got is a broken heart, and I don’t try to hide it when I play my guitar’.

Young’s next foray into the world of the soundtrack was an even scrappier affair. He provided the incidental music to Where The Buffalo Roam, the 1980 flick in which Bill Murray played the gun-totin’, drug-poppin’ gonzo author Hunter S. Thompson. Its soundtrack features classic tracks by Hendrix, Dylan and others but, in true gonzo spirit, Young’s seven contributions add up to less than 10 minutes of music and mainly consist of him playing creaky variations of “Home On The Range.””Neil Young’s score for this film about writer Hunter Thompson (played by Bill Murray) consists of several fragmentary instrumental and vocal performances of “Home on the Range” played by an orchestra with Young on vocals, harmonica, and distorted electric guitar (amounting to less than ten minutes of music), plus a series of rock evergreens: “All Along the Watchtower” and “Purple Haze” by Jimi Hendrix, “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” by the Temptations, “Highway 61” by Bob Dylan, “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)” by the Four Tops, and “Keep On Chooglin'” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Also, Murray strangles his way through a torturous “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” and there is some dialogue from the film.” (William Ruhlmann, AMG)

During Neil Young‘s recent tour, the rocker and Crazy Horse have been road-testing a new track titled “Who’s Gonna Stand Up?,” an environmental activism anthem that Young has since used to lend support to the anti-lobbyist documentary Under the Influence, Farm Aid and the People’s Climate March in New York.In fact, Young feels so strongly about the song and its message that he has unveiled three different versions of “Who’s Gonna Stand Up?”: The live Crazy Horse rendition, a solo acoustic take and a mammoth orchestral interpretation that’s backed by a 92-piece symphony and choir. The latter version will most likely appear on Young’s upcoming LP Storeytone, which the rocker revealed will be released in November.

When it was released, Trans was Neil Young’s most baffling album. He had employed a vocoder to synthesize his voice on five of the album’s nine tracks, resulting in disembodied singing, the lyrics nearly impossible to decipher without the lyric sheet. And even when you read the words, “Computer Age,” “We R in Control,” “Transformer Man,” “Computer Cowboy,” and “Sample and Hold” seemed like a vague mishmash of high-tech jargon. Later, Young would reveal that some of the songs expressed a theme of attempted communication with his disabled son, and in that context, lines like “I stand by you” and “So many things still left to do/But we haven’t made it yet” seemed clearer. But the vocoder, which robbed Young’s voice of its dynamics and phrasing, still kept the songs from being as moving as they were intended to be. And despite the crisp dance beats and synthesizers, the music sounded less like new Kraftwerk than like old Devo. A few more conventional Young songs (left over from an earlier rejected album) seemed out of place. Trans had a few good songs, notably “Sample and Hold” (which seemed to be about a computer dating service for robots), a remake of “Mr. Soul,” and “Like an Inca” (an intended cross between “Like a Hurricane” and “Cortez the Killer”?), but on the whole it was an idea that just didn’t work. – William Ruhlmann

Time Fades Away is a 1973 live album by Neil Young, consisting of previously unreleased material. It was Young’s first live album, and was recorded with The Stray Gators on the tour following 1972’s highly successful Harvest and has not been reissued on CD due to Young’s dissatisfaction with that particular series of concerts.Anyone who has followed Neil Young’s career knows enough not to expect a simple evening of mellow good times when they see him in concert, but in 1973, when Young hit the road after Harvest had confirmed his status as a first-echelon rock star, that knowledge wasn’t nearly as common as it is today. Young’s natural inclinations to travel against the current of audience expectations were amplified by a stormy relationship between himself and his touring band, as well as the devastating death of guitarist Danny Whitten, who died of a drug overdose shortly after being given his pink slip during the first phase of tour rehearsals. The shows that followed turned into a nightly exorcism of Young’s rage and guilt, as well as a battle between himself and an audience who, expecting to hear “Old Man” and “Heart of Gold,” didn’t know what to make of the electric assault they witnessed. All the more remarkably, Young brought along a mobile recording truck to capture the tour on tape for a live album and the result, Time Fades Away, was a ragged musical parade of bad karma and road craziness, opening with Young bellowing “14 junkies, too weak to work” on the title cut, and closing with “Last Dance,” in which he tells his fans “you can live your own life” with all the optimism of a man on the deck of a sinking ship. While critics and fans were not kind to Time Fades Away upon first release, decades later it sounds very much of a piece with Tonight’s the Night and On the Beach, albums that explored the troubled zeitgeist of America in the mid-’70s in a way few rockers had the courage to face. If the performances are often loose and ragged, they’re also brimming with emotional force, and despite the dashed hopes of “Yonder Stands the Sinner” and “Last Dance,” “Don’t Be Denied” is a moving remembrance of Young’s childhood and what music has meant to him, and it’s one of the most powerful performances Young ever committed to vinyl. Few rockers have been as willing as Young to lay themselves bare before their audience, and Time Fades Away ranks with the bravest and most painfully honest albums of his career — like the tequila Young was drinking on that tour, it isn’t for everyone, but you may be surprised by its powerful effects.

The 16th studio album from Neil Young, This Note’s For You was released in 1988 and was originally credited to Young & The Bluenotes. The overall theme of the album relates to the commercialism of rock and roll. The video for the title track was basically a parody of corporate rock and advertising which featured a Michael Jackson look-alike whose hair catches fire. The video was nominated for a Grammy in the category of “Best Concept Video” in 1989.”A collective groan from Neil Young fans could be heard when it was announced that, as his return to Reprise Records, Young was engaging in yet another genre experiment, this time recording blues and R&B with a six-piece horn section. If Landing on Water and Life had been lackluster, at least they hadn’t been as embarrassing as Young’s forays into rockabilly (Everybody’s Rockin’) and techno (Trans). And if you took This Note’s for You on its own genre terms, it could be just as laughable. A song like “Sunny Inside,” with its marching rhythm and charging horn charts, seemed to demand a forceful, gritty singer on the order of Wilson Pickett, and Young’s watery tenor just didn’t cut it. But the album was only half up-tempo numbers; the other half was bluesy ballads for which Young’s singing was effective and on which he sounded more personally involved than he had in years. And even on the rockers, his sense of humor often carried the day. This Note’s for You was the best of Young’s stylistic side trips because it was the only one in which the style augmented his own instead of overwhelming him. The songs were mediocre, but the playing was spirited. The album earned much better reviews than Young had gotten lately, largely because critics tend to stand in awe of the blues in whatever form it appears. And Young got further kudos due to his contretemps with MTV when the video channel first declined to program a clip for the title song because it featured parodies of popular MTV artists and commercial sponsors, then caved in and named it Best Video of the Year. Lost in all that hoopla, however, was that record buyers never came to the party. This Note’s for You was another commercial failure for Young, and it was apparent that, to lure back his audience, he would have to go back to making the kind of music his fans had liked a decade before.” (William Ruhlmann, AMG)

In 1975, Neil Young released Tonight’s The Night, an album that is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces in his catalog. The album was recorded in 1973, following the major success of his album Harvest, but it was not released for two more years. The album is dedicated to two of Neil’s close friends, Danny Whitten and Bruce Berry, who both died in the year before this album was recorded.Recorded on analog tape, Tonight’s The Night includes some of Young’s most brilliant and emotionally moving songs. In addition to the two versions of the title track, the album features “Borrowed Tune”, “World on a String”, “Mellow My Mind”, “Tired Eyes”, “Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown”, “Albuquerque” and “Roll Another Number (For The Road)”. For the 50th anniversary edition of this album, Young has replaced “Lookout Joe” with an unreleased version, also from the original album sessions at SIR studios in 1973.To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Tonight’s The Night, the album has been expanded with six additional songs. The versions of “Walk On” and “Tonight’s The Night [take 3]” have never been released. “Everybody’s Alone”, “Raised On Robbery” (featuring Joni Mitchell) and “Speakin’ Out Jam” were included on Neil Young Archives Vol. II, and the version of “Wonderin’” has only been available to stream on NYA. None of the bonus tracks have been previously released on vinyl.Tonight’s The Night 50th Anniversary Deluxe limited edition will be released on vinyl, CD and digitally. Recorded: August–September 1973 at Studio Instrument Rentals, Hollywood, CA (except “Come On Baby”: Fillmore East, NYC, March 1970; “Lookout Joe”: Broken Arrow Ranch, December 1972 and “Borrowed Tune”: Broken Arrow Ranch, December 1973)

Tonight’s the Night is the sixth studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young, released in 1975 on Reprise Records, catalogue MS 2221. It was recorded in 1973 (most of it on a single day, August 26), its release delayed for two years. It peaked at #25 on the Billboard 200. In 2003, the album was ranked number 331 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.Written and recorded in 1973 shortly after the death of roadie Bruce Berry, Neil Young’s second close associate to die of a heroin overdose in six months (the first was Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten), Tonight’s the Night was Young’s musical expression of grief, combined with his rejection of the stardom he had achieved in the late ’60s and early ’70s. The title track, performed twice, was a direct narrative about Berry: “Bruce Berry was a working man/He used to load that Econoline van.” Whitten was heard singing “Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown,” a live track recorded years earlier. Elsewhere, Young frequently referred to drug use and used phrases that might have described his friends, such as the chorus of “Tired Eyes,” “He tried to do his best, but he could not.” Performing with the remains of Crazy Horse, bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, along with Nils Lofgren (guitar and piano) and Ben Keith (steel guitar), Young performed in the ragged manner familiar from Time Fades Away — his voice was often hoarse and he strained to reach high notes, while the playing was loose, with mistakes and shifting tempos. But the style worked perfectly for the material, emphasizing the emotional tone of Young’s mourning and contrasting with the polished sound of CSNY and Harvest that Young also disparaged. He remained unimpressed with his commercial success, noting in “World on a String,” “The world on a string/Doesn’t mean anything.” In “Roll Another Number,” he said he was “a million miles away/From that helicopter day” when he and CSN had played Woodstock. And in “Albuquerque,” he said he had been “starvin’ to be alone/Independent from the scene that I’ve known” and spoke of his desire to “find somewhere where they don’t care who I am.” Songs like “Speakin’ Out” and “New Mama” seemed to find some hope in family life, but Tonight’s the Night did not offer solutions to the personal and professional problems it posed. It was the work of a man trying to turn his torment into art and doing so unflinchingly. Depending on which story you believe, Reprise Records rejected it or Young withdrew it from its scheduled release at the start of 1974 after touring with the material in the U.S. and Europe. In 1975, after a massive CSNY tour, Young at the last minute dumped a newly recorded album and finally put Tonight’s the Night out instead. Though it did not become one of his bigger commercial successes, the album immediately was recognized as a unique masterpiece by critics, and it has continued to be ranked as one of the greatest rock & roll albums ever made. –William Ruhlmann

Neil Young gave fans of his ‘Archives’ project an extra-special Christmas gift this year, dropping the eight-track ‘Summer Songs’ record that he first teased last month.

The archival album was initially recorded in 1987, tracked at the Broken Arrow Ranch in Redwood City, California. It’s unclear who Young made the album with – if anyone – but every instrument played on it was played by Young himself. The version released on Saturday (December 25) was produced by the Volume Dealers and mastered by Tim Mulligan. As seasoned fans will note, most of the tracks on ‘Summer Songs’ would eventually pop up elsewhere in Young’s discography. ‘American Dream’, for example, made it to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s titular ’88 record (as did ‘Name Of Love’).

‘Someday’, ‘Wrecking Ball’ and ‘Hangin’ On A Limb’ all appear on 1989’s ‘Freedom’, while ‘One Of These Days’ went to ‘Harvest Moon’ in ’92, and ‘For The Love Of Man’ appeared on Young’s 2012 album with Crazy Horse, ‘Psychedelic Pill’.

As Young noted with the record’s announcement, however, many of the lyrics featured on these demos “are significantly different from their subsequent master album releases”, with tracks sporting “several completely new and unheard verses”.

‘Summer Songs’ comes as the first chapter of ‘Neil Young Archives Volume III’. The second volume of the project was issued last year, covering unreleased music recorded between 1972 and ’76. Among the records shared was ‘Homegrown’, which – made up of recordings from ’74 and ’75 – languished as an unheard album for decades before its release in June 2020.

Sugar Mountain – Live at Canterbury House 1968 is a live album by Neil Young. On November 8–10, 1968, Young performed three shows at Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This album is compiled from the performances on the 9th and 10th.

This album is Volume 00 in the Archives Performance Series. Since volumes 2 and 3 had already been released, this album, though performed earlier chronologically, is the third release from the Series. The Riverboat 1969, released in The Archives Vol. 1 1963–1972 in 2009, is the fourth Archive Performance Series released but was performed earlier chronologically than volumes 2 and 3.Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968 the third installment from Neil Young’s Archives — although through some weird filing system this is Vol. 00, possibly because this dates before either of the previously released volumes in Archives Performance Series — culls highlights from Neil Young’s two shows at Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, MI on November 9 and 10, 1968. Like its two predecessors in the Archives series, the concerts captured on Sugar Mountain are legendary among Neil Young collectors, in this case because of the gentle, tentative version of the title track that showed up on Decade — prior to this, the only official release from the concert. At first glance, Sugar Mountain might seem similar to Live at Massey Hall 1971, as they’re both solo acoustic sets, but the tenor of the two shows is quite different. Massey Hall captured Neil in full flight, just before the release of Harvest, whereas the concerts on Sugar Mountain were just a month or two shy of the release of his first solo album. He had hits with Buffalo Springfield — much of the set list leans heavily on Springfield songs, such as “Mr. Soul,” “Expecting to Fly,” “Birds,” “Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing,” and “Broken Arrow” — but he had yet to prove himself as a solo artist, so the endearing tentative quality of his performances shouldn’t come as a surprise, and yet it does: Young’s reputation as a steely renegade often suggests that he never second-guesses his moves. Neil doesn’t second-guess here but he is fragile and human, telling stories (sometimes at considerable length) before sliding into these delicate songs, wryly lamenting that he should have some happy songs to sing before testing out the melody for “Winterlong,” stopping short because the song isn’t quite written yet. It’s a marvelously intimate performance, unguarded and open-hearted, unique in its delicate touch: it’s Neil Young before the myth crystallized, and listening to it anew, it’s easy to fall in love with him all over again. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Tuscaloosa is an 11-track live album from Neil Young and The Stray Gators, recorded at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa on February 5th 1973. The Stray Gators backed Neil occasionally in the ‘70’s and are Tim Drummond, Kenny Buttrey, Jack Nitzsche and Ben Keith. The album was produced by Neil Young and Elliot Mazer and mixed by John Hanlon. It is mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman from the original analogue tapesTuscaloosa features live versions of songs from Neil’s debut albums (track 1), plus classic songs from two of his biggest selling albums: After The Goldrush and Harvest. The album also features the title track from the live album Time Fades Away that would be released later in 1973, and songs from Neil’s classic album Tonight’s The Night that would not be released until 1975.

“It’s from the period right around Harvest and Tonight’s the Night,” Young told Rolling Stone. “For me, it’s edgy. It’s like those mellow songs with an edge. It’s really trippy to be down in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and singing those songs from Harvest and the songs that we were doing for Time Fades Away before it came out. I found this thing and it had such a great attitude to it. I just loved the whole night, so I put that together with [engineer] John Hanlon.”

Storytone was recorded with a 92-piece orchestra and choir, fulfilling Neil’s life-long dream to record with an orchestra that performed in the same room with him as he sang. The album is very personal for Young in terms of its lyrical content, as well as the mood and setting of the songs and the way they were recorded with particularly pristine sound quality. Storytone is available as a single-disc standard album or as a deluxe double-disc version, which contains the original album plus solo renditions of the same songs.Storytone arrived at the end of a year that already saw another new Neil Young album — that would be A Letter Home, a collection of folk covers recorded at Jack White’s Voice-O-Graph direct-to-vinyl recording booth at Third Man Records — which itself was only the tip of the iceberg that was Neil’s 2014. That spring, Young launched a high-end digital audio system called Pono, which was followed by the summer news that he was divorcing Pegi, his wife of 36 years, an event that led to a fresh feud with David Crosby that then led to Young saying he would never play with CSN again and, if that weren’t enough, Young also published his second book, Special Deluxe: A Memoir of Life & Cars, just prior to the release of Storytone. That’d be enough to sustain a few years for most artists but we all know perfectly well that Neil Young isn’t like most artists. He thrives on this kind of chaos and, appropriately enough, Storytone is fairly messy — which is quite an achievement for an album recorded in large part live in front of a full orchestra. Young does indeed croon over those strings, often rhapsodizing about the powers of new love or pleading to save the Earth, although he sometimes gets restless and rolls out a swinging big band. This means Storytone sometimes plays like a hybrid of Harvest at its most florid and the bloozy swagger of This Note’s for You — a curious combination that doesn’t seem quite as extreme on the album’s second disc, which houses nothing but solo renditions of the record’s ten tunes, but the very fact that there’s a reverse image of the album strengthens the impression that Young isn’t much in the mood to keep things simple. Which is odd, because all the original songs here are relatively simple, built to withstand simple arrangements — they sound fine when Young supports himself with no more than a guitar, piano, or ukulele — and they don’t buckle underneath the weight of an orchestra. Versatile they may be, but they’re united by Young’s aching sincerity. He’s earnest whether he’s taking a stance against fracking, romanticizing his old car, or singing about new love with the dewiness of a teenager. The open-heartedness is sweet if somewhat adolescent, a feeling not helped by the preponderance of 2014 headlines about Young’s love life, but even without that tabloid gunk, songs like “Glimmer” have an optimism that sounds just a shade disarming coming from a former cynic facing 70. But that’s one of the glorious things about Neil Young: he surprises and by delivering this big, sloppy valentine to everything he is and everything he loves, he’s not being neat but he is true to himself.

Silver & Gold is the 23rd studio album by Canadian / American musician Neil Young, released on April 25, 2000. Many of these songs were written in the late 1990s, though the title track was written in 1981; by his own estimation, he had been trying to get “the take” on this song for around ten years.

The album was a nominee for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year – Solo at the 2001 Juno Awards. The album art is a photo taken by Neil’s daughter Amber with the Game Boy Camera.

Neil Young’s archives are a bottomless treasure chest. The Loner has unearthed some hidden gems from 1976, the year when he was on tour both with his group, Crazy Horse, and as a solo acoustic artist, not forgetting his shows with Stephen Stills with whom he released the album Long May You Run in September. Songs for Judy focuses on his solo acoustic performances and comprises of around twenty tracks that he recorded in Boston, Atlanta, Fort Worth, Houston, Madison, Chicago and New York throughout November. They are mostly his classic hits (Heart of Gold, After the Gold Rush, The Needle and the Damage Done) but there are also some less well-known ones (No One Seems to Know). This was Neil Young when he was surfing an incredible wave of creativity, in just two years he composed three masterpieces: On the Beach, Tonight’s the Night and Zuma. The content of his compositions is truly impressive, and despite only being equipped with a guitar, piano, organ and harmonica, the recordings are flawless and deserving of being played on a loop. Even if these kinds of unpublished recordings are recommended first and foremost for Neil Young fans, for those who aren’t as familiar with his music this is a great place to begin.  – Marc Zisman

In a night of high-wire performances and semi-unhinged sonics, the concert has taken on a mythic legend in the past 50 years. All the musicians were in a free-form state of mind and swung for the fences on every track. The double-disc album captures a sound and soul that still resonates loudly for its daring, and among Neil Young fans is an achievement that is as unconventional as it is unforgettable. Recording engineer Pete Long’s liner notes dive right into the thick of the controversial concert, and help listeners relive a place and time that won’t be repeated.Recorded at London’s Rainbow Theater in November of 1973, Somewhere Under the Rainbow captures Neil Young at the height of the Tonight’s the Night era, having finished that tumultuous album just months earlier and already taking the material to the stage. The Santa Monica Flyers, Neil’s backing band on this tour, consisted of pedal steel player Ben Keith, bassist Billy Talbot, drummer Ralph Molina, and Nils Lofgren jumping between piano, guitar, and even occasional accordion. As with so many of the entries in Neil Young’s Official Bootleg Series, Somewhere Under the Rainbow circulated as a rough audience recorded bootleg for decades before this official release, and professional mastering can only polish the raw sound quality to a certain point. For this kind of live document, the imperfections are part of the charm. Though boomy renditions of “Albuquerque” and “Mellow My Mind” sound like they’re transmitting from the other side of a football field, there’s a warm gelling of the vocals and instruments that doesn’t happen with more defined multi-track recordings. Anyone deep enough into the Neil bootleg rabbit hole is probably already aware of Roxy Tonight’s the Night Live, a far clearer recording of a club date that happened a few months after the Rainbow gig. Roxy has the same backing band and a similar set list, but the two nights carry significantly different energies. While Neil seems to be in loose, jokey form on both, Somewhere Under the Rainbow tones things down for a string of acoustic numbers that weren’t a part of the more rocking Roxy date. This begins with a long, ghostly take on “Tonight’s the Night” (the second time in the set the band plays the tune), the Buffalo Springfield-era song “Flying on the Ground Is Wrong,” the always moving “Helpless,” and several others. The night ends with a burning rendition of “Cowgirl in the Sand.” Neil’s voice cracks a little, and there’s an especially wobbly quality to the way the band moves through the 12-plus-minute jam on the song, but it works with the rest of the set. Somewhere Under the Rainbow manages to feel intimate and hushed even when it’s rocking hard and spilling out messily. All of the Official Bootleg Series releases are valuable documents of various phases of Neil’s career, but this one has a personality that sets it apart. – Fred Thomas

Neil Young’s 2003/04 Greendale tour with Crazy Horse will be chronicled on Return to Greendale, a live album and film coming out on November 6th. It will be available as a two-disc set or limited edition box set with two LPs, two CDs and a documentary, Inside Greendale, about the creation of the album.

Greendale is a rock opera about a fictional small town that is rocked by the death of a beloved police officer. Along the way, it addresses corporate greed, a scandal-obsessed media environment and Bush-era propaganda. It climaxes with one of the central figures, a teenage girl named Sun Green, heading off to Alaska to fight for the environment.

Two months before it came out, Young and Crazy Horse launched a tour of North American amphitheaters where they played all 10 songs from the album in sequence with a large cast of actors and dancers. Many fans bought tickets thinking they were seeing a traditional Neil Young and Crazy Horse concert and were none-too-thrilled with the show, even if it ended with a brief set of Crazy Horse classics.Time Fades Away, Live Rust, Weld, Arc, Year of the Horse, MTV Unplugged, Earth – Neil Young has always been a proponent of recording his live concerts. So, in that same vein, he has kicked things up a notch with his Archives Series, comprising of a dozen, often previously unreleased, live performances recorded throughout his extensive career. Recorded in Toronto in September 2003, Return to Greendale is taken from his Greendale tour. It includes the complete, chronological track-list of the album, and nothing else, in a nutshell! It is slightly frustrating to only hear those ten songs, as captivating as they are. Although it does make sense seeing as the Greendale project is a concept-album – a kind of musical novel which tells the story of a family confronted with murder in the small town of Greendale. The studio version of this rock music with folk, blues and country elements becomes slightly more edgy on stage – just a little – but demands the same attention and concentration as any other decent concept-album. With his loyal musicians from Crazy Horse (drummer Ralph Molina, bassist Billy Talbot and guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro), Neil Young paints a moving picture of his colourful characters to convey political and ecological messages that are important to him. – Max Dembo

Neil Young will release more rare live recordings from his extensive archive with the Neil Young Official Bootleg Series (OBS), which began last fall with the release of Carnegie Hall 1970 (OBS1)

On May 6, Young will release the next three installments of the bootleg series as follows: Royce Hall, 1971 was recorded on the UCLA campus on January 30, a solo acoustic concert

Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 1971 – also solo and acoustic – is the final US concert of Young’s 1971 solo tour

Citizen Kane Jr. Blues (Live at The Bottom Line), from New York City 1974 is a surprise set. Where analog tapes exist in Young’s archive, these concerts have been properly mixed, so the quality of the recordings is much better than before – Royce Hall 1971 and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion 1971 are from the original analog masters. Where no tape exists, the original bootleg has been restored and remastered to give the listener the best possible sound experience – Citizen Kane Jr. Blues (Live at The Bottom Line), from New York City 1974

Roxy – Tonight’s The Night Live is one of the most sought-after recordings from his vast archives. This was the first public performance of many of the songs that would make up Young’s seminal album Tonight’s The Night, which would not be released until June 1975. The album’s final track “Walk On” would not appear until the release of On The Beach, in July 1974. Young would be the first artist to christen the stage at what would become one of the world’s great clubs, The Roxy Theater on the riotous Sunset Strip, right next door to the already infamous Rainbow Bar & Grille. The shows took place on September 20-22, 1973.Produced by Young and the late David Briggs, these resultant recordings were mixed by John Nowland with updated post-production and mastering by John Hanlon – along with Chris Bellman – at Bernie Grundman Mastering using the original analog master tape source. Close your eyes and you’ll be right there in that dark, smoky, 500 capacity room in West, L.A. on a hot summer night in 1973. Tonight’s The Night would go on to be named one of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time, and universally praised for it’s dark honesty and unapologetic raw delivery. The very same can be said for Roxy – Tonight’s The Night Live.

“In 1973, I drove my 1947 Buick Roadmaster, Black Queen, to LA from the North, accompanied by Ben Keith. Once we made it to Hollywood, we met up with Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina. Nils Lofgren joined us and we drove to Studio Instrument Rentals on Santa Monica Blvd. David Briggs, producer, and Johnny Talbot, equipment manager, met us there. They had blasted a hole in the wall to connect the green board which we had set up (an old tube board I had purchased that had been used recording many historic sessions from the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds to Monterey Pop Festival, among many others) next to the rehearsal hall. Our 16-track analog tape machine was set up next to the board. We had finished recording TTN and decided to celebrate with a gig at a new club opening on the Sunset Strip, the ROXY. We went there and recorded for a few nights, opening the ROXY. We really knew the Tonight’s the Night songs so we just played them again, the album, top to bottom, two sets a night for a few days. We had a great time. ROXY -Tonight’s the Night Live is the live recording we made. There is a little Super 8 footage of us driving to the gig in the Black Queen one of those nights.” (Neil Young)

Prairie Wind is the 26th studio album by Canadian / American musician Neil Young, released on September 27, 2005. After dalliances with 1960s soul music (Are You Passionate?) and rock opera (Greendale, which spawned a Young-directed film of the same name), Prairie Wind featured an acoustic-based sound reminiscent of his earlier commercially successful albums Harvest and Harvest Moon. The album was in part inspired by the illness and recent death of his father, Canadian sportswriter and novelist Scott Young, and the album is dedicated in part to the elder Young.Young recorded the album in Nashville before undergoing minimally invasive surgery for an aneurysm in the spring of 2005, and some of the songs on the album appear to be informed by Young confronting his own mortality.

A premiere live performance of Prairie Wind was held in 18–19 August 2005 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Here, Young held a two-night concert where songs from the album were performed. These concerts became the subject of a film directed by Jonathan Demme entitled Heart of Gold.

Young debuted the album’s closing track, “When God Made Me”, at the Live 8 concert in Barrie, Ontario, Canada.

Neil Young’s first two collaborations with Promise of the Real, the band led by Willie Nelson’s son Lukas Nelson, sounded sorta like tethered Crazy Horse albums. But without the free-fall unpredictability of Young’s most reliable backing group of the past five decades, 2015’s The Monsanto Years and the following year’s embellished live record, Earth, came off like more structured attempts to capture Young at his most unhinged and plugged in. Their third record, The Visitor, is more of the same, and like The Monsanto Years and last year’s Peace Trail, it’s a political one, charged through a filter of recent news.We barely have time to digest his new albums before even newer ones are released! More active than ever since the start of the 2000s, Neil Young pens a disc here with Promise of the Real, his band that he uses a bit like how he used Crazy Horse in the past. With them, the Loner usually shows his claws. Which is even easier now that it is the time of Donald Trump’s presidency, which he applies himself to pull apart in due form. As for sound, The Visitor throws you off with its eclecticism, a quite uncommon occurrence for Neil Young on the same disc. Country rock, assertive boogie, classy folk, remover’s funk, everything goes in! Instantly recognizable, the old Canadian bison’s voice binds all of these things together for the duration of a classic and honest exercise which doesn’t upset the musical values of its illustrious author and doesn’t compete with his masterpieces of yesteryear.

The Monsanto Years is the thirty-sixth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young, released on June 29, 2015 on Reprise Records. A concept album, criticizing agribusiness Monsanto, The album is a collaboration with Willie Nelson’s sons Lukas and Micah, alongside Lukas’ bandmates in Promise of the Real. The album was produced by both Young and John Hanlon, and is accompanied by a film documenting the recording process.Old folkie that he is, Neil Young harbors a soft spot for songs as protest, and The Monsanto Years is full of them. Where he often railed against war, here the purported target is the agricultural company Monsanto, a firm that, among other things, specializes in genetically modified crops, but Young uses that as a pivot to rage against all manner of modern outrages. Apathy among the populace, avarice among corporations, and cultural homogenization provide the throughline on The Monsanto Years, and while the weathered hippie takes some time to lay down his electric guitar and breathe, this isn’t a mournful album like Living with War, his W-era missive. This is a raging record and to that end, Young hired the Promise of the Real, a ragtag outfit led by Willie Nelson’s guitarist son Lukas, to approximate Crazy Horse’s lop-legged lumber. Usually it works: the group roars not with righteousness but with their own glee at making noise. Plus, the Promise of the Real is adept at the softer side, too, so they ably follow Young, laying down the electric and harmonizing in a fashion reminiscent of an unwashed CSN. Young is blessed with a younger, wilier version of his old compadres and that suits his tunes, which feel comfortable yet have a bite. Young uses his sturdy footing to lash out at what he perceives as destructive forces — to our dinner tables and social fabric — and if the individual message may wind up fading like yesterday’s newspapers, the music will keep The Monsanto Years burning bright. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Neil Young + Promise of the Real’s live album ‘Noise & Flowers’ captures the group in all their glory on their 2019 European tour. The release will be accompanied by a concert film that shares the same title and is included in the album’s 2xLP+CD+Blu-ray Deluxe Edition. ‘Noise & Flowers’ documents a 9-date tour that began just two weeks after Young’s lifetime friend and manager of more than 50 years, Elliot Roberts, passed away at the age of 76. Performing alongside a photograph of Roberts taped to his road case, Young approached each show as a celebratory memorial service to honour his late friend. In paying tribute to the manager who guided Young’s career for over a half-century, ‘Noise & Flowers’ explores all corners of his vast discography. It balances all-timer anthems with rarely aired ’70s deep cuts and ’90s gems. His frequent backing band since 2015, Promise of the Real effectively bridges the extremes in Young’s sound, infusing his raging rockers and country serenades with their casual brilliance and telepathic intuition.

Peace Trail features all new songs that Young wrote since the release of his album EARTH, this past June. This new album is primarily acoustic and reflects an intimate, sparse approach to each of the ten songs within.

“Neil Young matches the fire in his belly to the poetry from his pen for one of the most gripping outings of his long career. This riveting collection, a spare acoustic-electric hybrid, seethes with righteous indignation over a plethora of social and political injustices, but also soothes with deeply felt empathy for those on the receiving end of iniquity.” – Los Angeles Times / Randy LewisPeace Trail was recorded at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-la Studios and features Young on vocals and guitar, Jim Keltner on drums, and Paul Bushnell on bass. It was produced by Young and John Hanlon, mixed by John Hanlon.

Most recently Young previewed five songs from the album during his performances during the Desert Trip Festival, in Indio, CA. last week which both Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly summed up as simply “explosive.” “Neil slashed and bashed at his guitar, the sound intense and nearly out of control.” – Rolling Stone
The Los Angeles Times called Young’s performance “intensely powerful,” “furious” and concluded, “combining passion, energy and stinging content, Young served up a deeply rewarding performance.”

On his songs for Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young had demonstrated an eclecticism that ranged from the rock of “Mr. Soul” to the complicated, multi-part arrangement of “Broken Arrow.” On his debut solo album, he continued to work with composer/arranger Jack Nitzsche, with whom he had made “Expecting to Fly” on the Buffalo Springfield Again album, and together the two recorded a restrained effort on which the folk-rock instrumentation, most of which was by Young, overdubbing himself, was augmented by discreet string parts. The country & western elements that had tinged the Springfield’s sound were also present, notably on the leadoff track, “The Emperor of Wyoming,” an instrumental that recalled the Springfield song “A Child’s Claim to Fame.” Still unsure of his voice, Young sang in a becalmed high tenor that could be haunting as often as it was listless and whining. He was at his least appealing on the nine-and-a-half-minute closing track, “The Last Trip to Tulsa,” on which he accompanied himself with acoustic guitar, singing an impressionistic set of lyrics seemingly derived from Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited. But double-tracking and the addition of a female backup chorus improved the singing elsewhere, and on “The Loner,” the album’s most memorable track, Young displayed some of the noisy electric guitar work that would characterize his recordings with Crazy Horse and reminded listeners of his ability to turn a phrase. Still, Neil Young made for an uneven, low-key introduction to Young’s solo career, and when released it was a commercial flop, his only album not to make the charts. (Several months after the album’s release, Young remixed it to bring out his vocals more and added some overdubs. This second version replaced the first in the U.S. from then on, though the original mix remained available overseas.) –William Ruhlmann

Living with War – In the Beginning is a studio album by Neil Young, released in 2006. It is a stripped-down version of Young’s 2006 album Living with War. The album includes first mixes of the live trio recordings, made the day of recording.

The album’s lyrics, titles, and conceptual style are highly critical of the policies of the George W. Bush administration. Written and recorded over the course of only nine days in March and April 2006, its lyrics are in line with the early 1960s albums of folk artists such as Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan.

On this version of the album, the sound is straight-from-the-source, captured live in the studio exactly the way it was recorded, without the backing instrumentation and choral accompaniment found on the original release.

The main elements of Neil Young’s music are manageable and well-known: a few chords, distorted or acoustic guitars,a high, strained voice and lyrics that make you think. Since the songs from the Canadian are just so bubbling out, better albums line up with less good ones. Due to the appearance of his works in an annual rhythm, the different quality can only be managed with patience.Statistically speaking, the rather weak-chested “Greendale” (2003) and “Prairie Wind” (2005) had to be followed by another record, which makes us sit up and take notice. The mathematical calculation is correct this time: titles such as “Living With War” and “Impeach The President” indicate that Young once again has the desire to choose explicit words.

Very promising: amplifier on, riff with three chords, drums, voice. “We will not need shadowmen to govern. We won’t need a fucking war,” Young says in “After The Garden”. The subject is outlined: it is about Iraq and the solution to a human and political catastrophe.

“Every day I live with the war. Every day I live with war in my heart. Even now, in this moment, I am living with war,” says the title track. Who is to blame for this situation? On the one hand, advertising and the big corporations with their false promises (“The Restless Consumer”, on which Young takes the side of the globalization opponents), but above all politics. “In the days of ‘mission accomplished’ our boss landed on an aircraft carrier. The sun set over a golden PR backdrop. In the days of ‘Mission accomplished'”.

The” boss ” is, of course, George W. Bush. “The president should be deposed because he lied and led our country unnecessarily into war. He has abused the power we have given him. He has squandered all our money. Who is the man who hired all these criminals? The shadows in the White House, behind closed doors, reshaping the facts until they fit their explanation of why we must send our men to war, ” reads the first two stanzas of “Impeach The President.” And so it goes on, garnished with Bush quotes in the original tone.

Of course, one could argue here that a) Young is only an electoral Ami, and b) that not only men but also women are stationed in Iraq. But this went beyond the concept: the Iraq War is a global issue that originated and ended in Bush. With another president, the matter would have been completely different, Young is convinced. “Among us there is a strong and honest man who can lead us out of desolation … I hope that he will follow his vocation. Maybe this time it’s a woman or a black man,” he wishes in “Lookin’ For A Leader”. A formulation that explicitly excludes Condoleezza Rice.

Young calls his latest product a “Metal Folk Protest” album. Metal might be a bit exaggerated, but at least he unpacks the effect device, which already creaked on “Ragged Glory” and the B-side of “Rust Never Sleeps”. While Chad Cromwell (drums) and Rick Rosas (bass) act in the background, two suspicious elements are added at first: a trumpet and a 100-piece choir. Those who still remember “Landing on Water” – Nomen est Omen-will shrug in horror, but the voices fit surprisingly well with the guitar and Young’s accusations. Especially the vocal accompaniment gives the impression that this is a popular movement – which was probably also Young’s intention.

Not by chance is also the simple design of the cover and booklet, which appear as described brown paper bags-the content is apparently so explosive that it should only be packaged under the counter and anonymously. From a European point of view, Young certainly does not present any unheard-of thoughts, but such an explicit attack on politics comes as a surprise, especially since he has behaved suspiciously quietly in this respect in the past.

With so much brain work, it would be presumptuous to expect revolutionary new melodies – after all, it took Young just two weeks to write the lyrics and record the record. Again and again the familiar shines through, most clearly in “Shock And Awe”, which generously makes use of “The One I Love” by R. E. M. But Young also quotes himself, for example with” Flags Of Freedom”, which in places sounds like a distorted version of” Thrasher”. “Roger And Out” recalls Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” and his own “Keep On Rockin'”, while “Families” features Bruce Springsteen.

Young’s solution to the burning leadership problem is: improvement through change. “America is beautiful, but it has its ugly side”, he sings in “Lookin’ For A Leader”. Hope lies in the country’s self-cleansing power and support from above. So it is logical, if a bit corny, that the choir puts its best foot forward at the end and starts the first verse of the traditional “America The Beautiful”. “America, America, God shed His grace on thee / And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea” are the last words of the album. If even Neil Young requests God’s help, the situation must be pretty much done.

The 80s are the most discredited and criticized period of Neil Y We are also reminded of this recording, bootleg, which documents a show of November 21, 1986 at the Cow Palace in Daly, California in the company of Crazy Horse, retrieved from the radio program of the time, already printed on triple vinyl, and now available on CD: in the middle of a performance in which Neil entertains even on the phone with the mother and with comedian Sam Kinison, the canadian gives the audience a good dose of classic running in the second part of tracks from albums like “Re·ac·tor” (“Estrella de la Ópera”), “Trans” (“Muestra y espera”, “Was de la computadora”), “Landing On violentoAter” (“Violent Lado”), presenting almost in full preview the repertoire included the following year on “Vida” (“Demasiado solitaire”, “Reina Inca”, “Vacaciones en el Middle East”, “Wide Caminata a casa”, “Cuando Tu Coraz Solitario

Live at the Cellar Door is a live album by Neil Young, featuring performances from his six 1970 concerts in Washington D.C. It was released on December 10, 2013. The album is volume 02.5 in Young’s Archives Performance Series. Live at the Cellar Door features songs from multiple early albums created by Young, as well as Buffalo Springfield which include: After the Gold Rush, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Buffalo Springfield (album) and Buffalo Springfield Again.

Additionally, the album features the only known recording of Young performing his classic “Cinnamon Girl” on piano. As stated by his comment on the disc “That’s the first time I’ve ever performed that song on Piano!”

The album closes with the stunning piano track: “Flying on the Ground is Wrong” in which Young humoursly quips: “I had it put in my contracts that I would only play on a nine foot Steinway Grand Piano, just for a little eccentricity. In late 1970, Neil Young was coming down from a bustling stretch of touring with the immensely popular Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and had just released his third solo album, After the Goldrush. That album, lodged between the jammy country rock of 1969’s Crazy Horse-aided Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and the hushed, hermetic folk of 1972’s Harvest, found an ethereal and otherworldly middle ground for Young’s rapidly developing songwriting voice. Live at the Cellar Door finds a solo Young just a few months after the release of After the Goldrush, playing a six-show stint at the tiny Washington D.C. club, running through a set heavy on the relatively new material from Gold Rush, but also getting into songs that wouldn’t see album release for a few more records yet. It would have been impossible to gauge at the time of the performance, but the set list of Live at the Cellar Door is a non-stop string of what would become some of Young’s many timeless classics, punctuated by the sound of the unthinkably small audience clapping politely as he wove through 15 magical compositions on spare acoustic guitar and occasional piano. Not just heavy on highlights, this is a rare live recording that lacks any duds or missteps at all. Apart from near-perfect selections from After the Goldrush like its fever-dream title track, the heartbreaking “Birds,” or the long look at growing up in “Tell Me Why,” Young debuts future hit “Old Man” as well as the On the Beach piano dirge “See the Sky About to Rain.” He also offers up a piano-only reading of “Cinnamon Girl,” announcing “That’s the first time I ever did that one on piano.” Part of an ongoing archival series of key live dates from Young’s massive career, Live at the Cellar Door includes snippets of the usual between-song banter, but a noticeably tired Young is more subdued even when making dry jokes. Sticking mostly to focused readings of his then-brand-new songs, he cultivates a somber mood, tapping into all the sorrow, wonder, and wistfulness of his early solo material as well as a few Buffalo Springfield tunes. These tracks feel much more like an album of alternate versions than a typical live recording. The intimacy and raw beauty of Live at the Cellar Door makes it not just a must for super fans, but a valuable companion piece to any of Young’s early studio output. –AllMusic Review by Fred Thomas

The acclaimed Toronto performance features classics “Old Man” and, in a suite, “A Man Needs A Maid” and “Heart Of Gold” (before they were recorded for Harvest) along with some of his most popular songs (“Cowgirl In The Sand,” “Ohio”) as well as the most obscure (“Bad Fog Of Loneliness”). Live At Massey Hall is a rock gem.“…a musical and sonic treat Young fans would be foolish to pass up. Surely this won’t be in-print forever, so get it while you can! Live recordings don’t get much better than this.” (Michael Fremer)

“This is the album that should have come out between After the Gold Rush and Harvest. David Briggs, my producer, was adamant that this should be the record, but I was very excited about the takes we got on Harvest and wanted Harvest out. David disagreed. As I listen to this today, I can see why.” (Neil Young)

“Le Noise” is the thirty-first studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young. The album was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Daniel Lanois. “Le Noise” received generally positive reviews with Uncut magazine proclaiming it as the second best album of 2010 in its year-end Top 50 Albums list. This album was number 20 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 30 Best Albums of 2010.The old conventional wisdom on Neil Young used to be that he alternated between acoustic folk and full-on guitar skronk with every other album, but 2010’s Le Noise – the French affection in its title a tongue-in-cheek tip of the beret to his producer Daniel Lanois – melds the two extremes. At its core, it’s a singer/songwriter album, a collection of reflections and ruminations about life and loss in the modern world, war imagery rubbing against battered memories and tattered autobiography, the songs leisurely following their own winding path, but it’s produced loudly, with Neil supporting himself with only his electric guitar for all but two tracks, where he switches the Les Paul for an acoustic. He’s not in Crazy Horse mode, spitting out chunky garage rock riffs, but strumming his overdriven electric, with Lanois tweaking the results, accentuating the ambience in post-production. To say the least, this results in a distinctive album, but it plays differently than it reads, sounding not too dissimilar from the Bush-era laments of Freedom. If Le Noise isn’t as galvanizing as Freedom, it’s because it’s created on a considerably smaller scale, its eight songs containing no masterpieces and Lanois’ moody noir production reining in Young’s messy signature. So, Le Noise winds up as something elusive and intriguing, a minor mood piece that seems to promise more than it actually delivers.

Landing on Water is the 15th studio album by Neil Young. The album was released on July 21, 1986, by Geffen Records. Several of the songs on the album were resurrected from Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s failed 1984 sessions – a set of sessions where, according to longtime producer David Briggs, the musicians “played like monkeys”.Backed only by co-producer Danny Kortchmar on guitar and Steve Jordan on drums, with all three playing synthesizers, Neil Young turns in an album that attempts to mix the raunchy rock thrust of his Crazy Horse-style music with contemporary trends in pop, especially the tendency to turn the drums way up in the mix. It’s an uneasy combination in which Jordan’s forceful drumming dominates the tracks, with Young’s vocals nearly buried. But that only means that the production has ruined a group of songs few of which were any good anyway. The only one that offers the promise of being one of Young’s better efforts is “Hippie Dream,” a sober criticism of what became of ’60s idealism in general and Young’s erstwhile bandmate David Crosby in particular. But if Landing on Water was not a good album, at least it seemed to point Young away from the stylistic dabbling of his last three albums and back toward the kind of rock he did best, and at least some of his fans returned as a result, giving him a slight uptick in sales. – William Ruhlmann

Hawks & Doves is the tenth studio album by Canadian folk rock musician Neil Young, released in October 1980.

Hawks & Doves’s two sides were recorded in different circumstances, side one being culled from sessions dating from approximately 1974 through 1977, and side two from sessions set in early 1980 specifically for the album. It is also one of Young’s shortest albums, its running time just under half an hour.

As much for the wider public as for his great many fans, Neil Young’s Harvest represents the pinnacle of his rich discography from the seventies. Founded upon country-rock and melancholic folk, the so-called Loner’s art shines ever brightly throughout this fourth album, released back in February 1972. It is a gold mine full of bucolic, pastoral gems, recorded with a new group of brilliant musicians called the Stray Gators, with Ben Keith on steel guitar, Kenny Buttrey on drums, Tim Drummond on bass, and the great Jack Nitzsche on piano and arrangement. Harvest, which frequently displays his tumultuous relationship with actress Carrie Snodgress (mother of his first son Zeke) also incorporates some impressive somber moments, such as in ‘The Needle and the Damage Done’ – a stunning ballad about his guitarist Danny Whitten’s heroin addiction, who died of an overdose in November that same year, just after being kicked out of the band by Neil Young. But behind the ‘peace and love’ bliss enhanced by contributions from David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash as well as James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, Harvest remains a rich, tormented and melodically flawless work – one on which the violins of the London Symphony Orchestra (‘A Man Needs a Maid’ and ‘There’s a World’) are handled with care and taste. It is an album that will influence many future generations, and which celebrates its 50th birthday with this luxurious edition decked out with an additional 17 tracks. His solo concert at the BBC on 23rd February 1971 will surely be a gem amongst collectors of Neil Young bootlegs. As a bonus, there are alternative versions of three tracks (‘Bad Fog of Loneliness’, ‘Journey Through the Past’ and ‘Dance Dance Dance’). This 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is surely a must-have.

Neil Young’s most popular album, Harvest benefited from the delay in its release (it took 18 months to complete due to Young’s back injury), which whetted his audience’s appetite, the disintegration of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (Young’s three erstwhile partners sang on the album, along with Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor), and most of all, a hit single. “Heart of Gold,” released a month before Harvest, was already in the Top 40 when the LP hit the stores, and it soon topped the charts. It’s fair to say, too, that Young simply was all-pervasive by this time: “Heart of Gold” was succeeded at number one by “A Horse with No Name” by America, which was a Young soundalike record. But successful as Harvest was (and it was the best-selling album of 1972), it has suffered critically from reviewers who see it as an uneven album on which Young repeats himself. Certainly, Harvest employs a number of jarringly different styles. Much of it is country-tinged, with Young backed by a new group dubbed the Stray Gators who prominently feature steel guitarist Ben Keith, though there is also an acoustic track, a couple of electric guitar-drenched rock performances, and two songs on which Young is accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra. But the album does have an overall mood and an overall lyric content, and they conflict with each other: The mood is melancholic, but the songs mostly describe the longing for and fulfillment of new love. Young is perhaps most explicit about this on the controversial “A Man Needs a Maid,” which is often condemned as sexist by people judging it on the basis of its title. In fact, the song contrasts the fears of committing to a relationship with simply living alone and hiring help, and it contains some of Young’s most autobiographical writing. Unfortunately, like “There’s a World,” the song is engulfed in a portentous orchestration. Over and over, Young sings of the need for love in such songs as “Out on the Weekend,” “Heart of Gold,” and “Old Man” (a Top 40 hit), and the songs are unusually melodic and accessible. The rock numbers, “Are You Ready for the Country” and “Alabama,” are in Young’s familiar style and unremarkable, and “There’s a World” and “Words (Between the Lines of Age)” are the most ponderous and overdone Young songs since “The Last Trip to Tulsa.” But the love songs and the harrowing portrait of a friend’s descent into heroin addiction, “The Needle and the Damage Done,” remain among Young’s most affecting and memorable songs. –William Ruhlmann

Neil Young’s “lost album,” Homegrown, gets its debut 41 years late. Young shelved it because he “just couldn’t listen to” the heartache, which followed the collapse of his romance with actress Carrie Snodgress. Meant to fall between Harvest and Comes a Time, the 1974 time capsule fits neatly in that space. “Separate Ways” and “Try,” both featuring drums by Levon Helm, truly feel like an extension of Harvest: the former a noir-country lament and the latter an ambling plea for love lifted aloft by Emmylou Harris’ backing vocals. Throughout, train-whistle harmonica is a Greek chorus, popping up on the gorgeous and hopeless “Star of Bethlehem” (“All your dreams and your lovers won’t protect you”) and stripped-bare “Love Is a Rose”—which would be made famous in ’75 by Linda Ronstadt and here ends with urgent guitar chords like exclamation points of warning. There are moments of indulgence—you’re safe to skip any title that’s the name of a place—but also songs that stand with his best. The blistering “Vacancy” (“You poison me with that long, vacant stare”) and high-lonesome “White Line,” with Robbie Roberston, aren’t to be missed. – Shelly Ridenour

How does one represent the career of one of the most distinctive, powerful singer/songwriters of the 20th century in the space of a single CD? By keeping it simple and sticking to the milestones. That’s exactly what „Greatest Hits“ HITS accomplishes, by presenting 16 of Neil Young’s most beloved compositions. The gritty, fuzz-guitar fury of Young’s work with Crazy Horse (‘Cinnamon Girl,’ ‘Hey Hey, My My [Into the Black]’) brushes up against the acoustic-based, country-tinged ‘Old Man’ and ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart,’ as well as haunting, soul-baring ballads such as ‘The Needle and the Damage Done.’ Few would deny that the 1970s were Young’s richest decade, and this collection strongly focuses on those years, skipping most of Young’s genre-hopping ’80s albums and grandfather-of-grunge ’90s recordings, but the gems from those years would make a rewarding sequel to this concise, sterling anthology. It may be hard to believe, but 2004’s Greatest Hits is not only the first retrospective Neil Young has released since 1977’s Decade, it’s the first ever single-disc collection of his best-known songs. That’s a span of 27 years separating the two collections, which is an awful long time to resist a Greatest Hits disc — many of his peers succumbed, offering countless comps during those years — and such a resistance to a compilation may not be much a surprise from the legendarily prickly Young, but what is a surprise is that 11 of the 16 songs on Greatest Hits were also on Decade. Of the five songs that were not on Decade, only two date from after the ’70s — 1989’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” and 1992’s “Harvest Moon” — while one of the remaining three (1970’s “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”) comes from the time chronicled on Decade; the other two, 1978’s “Comes a Time” and 1979’s “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black),” arrived in the two years of the ’70s not covered on the 1977 compilation. All this means is that Greatest Hits offers the basic canon, with no frills and none of Neil’s trademark idiosyncrasy. Some may miss that cantankerous spirit, pointing out that this contains nothing from his towering twin masterpieces of dark introspection — Tonight’s the Night and On the Beach — or that there’s nothing from Buffalo Springfield (which was covered on Decade) and that noteworthy songs like “Powderfinger,” “Cortez the Killer,” “Lotta Love,” and “Long May You Run” are missing. Ultimately, that doesn’t matter much, because Greatest Hits has all the songs that every Neil Young fan, from the devoted to the casual listener, agrees are his biggest and best: “Down by the River,” “Cinnamon Girl,” “Helpless,” “After the Gold Rush,” “Southern Man,” “Ohio,” “The Needle and the Damage Done,” “Old Man,” “Heart of Gold,” “Like a Hurricane.” And that’s why it works as an all-business introduction for the uninitiated and as a concise summary for those not willing to travel down all the long, winding roads Young has traveled over the years. In other words, it’s as good a compilation as it could have been. –AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Has there ever been anything like an ordinary Neil Young album? No! Even after the release of more than 60 works in almost 45 years, the old Young premise applies: the constant constant remains the unsteady. His recordings move either completely to tease or to admire. “Fork In The Road” has a bit of both.At first glance, you could perceive the record as a concept album. Neil’s 1957 Lincoln Continental, which he himself converted into an ecomobile prototype in the shed for years, acts as a bracket for all tracks. With this car, he has been driving around America for two years, absorbing impressions from the road, the big and small stories.

With the old quarrelsome Grantler, such an experience typically also leads to a journey into the inner self, to an insightful self-reflection. Fortunately, the young-typical cocktail of thundering anger and sensitive gentleness remains on this disc for the listener.

As raw as freshly harvested potatoes, the 63-year-old knocks the board around our ears, as if he is still 25. The unique Bratzgitarre of the master plows through the sheet music field like a scythe, never like a sickle. Shattered, scrappy rock with many blues elements and desert country form the basis. Everything here sounds like roaring engines and dusty highways.

However, the lively rock veteran does not appear dusty or even antiquated in any second. But just as aimlessness is the first premise of a trip into the blue, the songs sometimes seem a bit directionless and sketchy. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to stay on the ball. The whole CD grows from time to time and reveals its qualities in detail only after a few passages.

“Just Singing A Song Won’t Change The World” wants to wake up with a kind of rock meditation and fight lethargy. “Cough Up The Bucks” etched shaking and oiled up against the hegemonic Oil Companys and corpses of the economic crisis. “Off The Road” contains an introverted inventory of the inner spiritual highway. Campfire warm pleating guitar sounds envelop the little song and keep the wolves away.

Sure, party rock à la” Get Behind The Wheel ” seems relatively insignificant and more like a gap filler. But the big bomb doesn’t expect us until the end of the fork in the form of the beautiful ballad “Light A Candle”. Seductive and hypnotic, the acoustic guitar lures into the dark to be light to itself and all listeners. Beyond all religions, Uncle Neil recounts his spiritual commitment to infinity and soul wandering after death.

The fragile and at the same time indestructible melody has the makings of a classic, similar to the great deeds “Eldorado”, “Needle And The Damage Done” or “After The Goldrush”. In a single young song of this kind there is more movingly real feeling than in the whole emo scene combined.

After the last chord has faded, you want to toast the old romantic, while he, winking at you, disappears on the horizon with his old limousine. Compared to Neil Young, who only occasionally performs above average by his standards, many of his fellow artists remain on the side of the road. From this 57er Lincoln I like to let myself often take a piece of the way.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is the second studio album by the Canadian musician Neil Young, originally released on Reprise Records catalogue RS 6349. His first with backing band Crazy Horse, it peaked at number 34 on the US Billboard 200 and has been certified a platinum album by the RIAA.Neil Young’s second solo album, released only four months after his first, was nearly a total rejection of that polished effort. Though a couple of songs, “Round Round (It Won’t Be Long)” and “The Losing End (When You’re On),” shared that album’s country-folk style, they were altogether livelier and more assured. The difference was that, while Neil Young was a solo effort, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere marked the beginning of Young’s recording association with Crazy Horse, the trio of Danny Whitten (guitar), Ralph Molina (drums), and Billy Talbot (bass) that Young had drawn from the struggling local Los Angeles group the Rockets. With them, Young quickly cut a set of loose, guitar-heavy rock songs — “Cinnamon Girl,” “Down by the River,” and “Cowgirl in the Sand” — that redefined him as a rock & roll artist. The songs were deliberately underwritten and sketchy as compositions, their lyrics more suggestive than complete, but that made them useful as frames on which to hang the extended improvisations (“River” and “Cowgirl” were each in the nine-to-ten-minute range) Young played with Crazy Horse and to reflect the ominous tone of his singing. Young lowered his voice from the near-falsetto employed on his debut to a more expressive range, and he sang with greater confidence, accompanied by Whitten and, on “Round Round,” by Robin Lane. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere was breathtakingly different when it appeared in May 1969, both for Young and for rock in general, and it reversed his commercial fortunes, becoming a moderate hit. (Young’s joining Crosby, Stills & Nash the month after its release didn’t hurt his profile, of course.) A year and a half after its release, it became a gold album, and it has since gone platinum. And it set a musical pattern Young and his many musical descendants have followed ever since; almost 30 years later, he was still playing this sort of music with Crazy Horse, and a lot of contemporary bands were playing music clearly influenced by it.

Dead Man is one of those unusual (and often legendary) soundtracks that a director or fan simply “hands over” to a jazz or folk star who improvises to the film that has already been edited. Released in 1996, Jim Jarmusch’s feature film tells the story of the wanderings of William Blake (Johnny Depp) and the Indian Nobody (Gary Farmer) through the Wild West in the late 19th century. Neil Young’s music is light years away from the epic scores found in the golden era of Hollywood westerns and is instead based on just the electric guitar, which is only replaced by an organ for the duration of one track (Organ Solo). The haunting sound of the electric guitar together with the magnificent black and white film plays a key part in creating Dead Man’s strange and psychedelic atmosphere, which is why there are six Guitar Solos on the soundtrack. Sensual, tortured and endearing, Neil Young’s guitar seems bewitched by the film’s visuals and he makes full use of effects like reverberation, distortion and delay. It is rare to find music so physically connected to a film and the marginality of the characters. Among the album’s bravura pieces are the lyrical Solo No.5 (which is almost 15 minutes long), as well as Solo No.6, whose effects sound like the cries of an injured animal. The track ends with the very poignant repetition of two simple notes, and with that the film ends too. It should also be pointed out that there are passages interspersed throughout the album during which Johnny Depp recites poems by William Blake. – Nicolas Magenham

Zuma is the seventh studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young, released on Reprise Records in 1975. Co-credited to Crazy Horse, it includes “Cortez the Killer,” one of Young’s best-known songs. It peaked at #25 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified a gold record by the RIAA.Having apparently exorcised his demons by releasing the cathartic Tonight’s the Night, Neil Young returned to his commercial strengths with Zuma (named after Zuma Beach in Los Angeles, where he now owned a house). Seven of the album’s nine songs were recorded with the reunited Crazy Horse, in which rhythm guitarist Frank Sampedro had replaced the late Danny Whitten, but there were also nods to other popular Young styles in “Pardon My Heart,” an acoustic song that would have fit on Harvest, his most popular album, and “Through My Sails,” retrieved from one of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s abortive recording sessions. Young had abandoned the ragged, first-take approach of his previous three albums, but Crazy Horse would never be a polished act, and the music had a lively sound well-suited to the songs, which were some of the most melodic, pop-oriented tunes Young had crafted in years, though they were played with an electric-guitar-drenched rock intensity. The overall theme concerned romantic conflict, with lyrics that lamented lost love and sometimes longed for a return (“Pardon My Heart” even found Young singing, “I don’t believe this song”), though the overall conclusion, notably in such catchy songs as “Don’t Cry No Tears” and “Lookin’ for a Love,” was to move on to the next relationship. But the album’s standout track (apparently the only holdover from an early intention to present songs with historical subjects) was the seven-and-a-half-minute epic “Cortez the Killer,” a commentary on the Spanish conqueror of Latin America that served as a platform for Young’s most extensive guitar soloing since his work on Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. –William Ruhlmann

Between vintage concert albums and recent ones excavated from archival tapes, it’s become easier than ever to track the onstage history of Neil Young and Crazy Horse. We can now hear Young and the band in its early, funky, Danny Whitten days (Live at the Fillmore East), breaking in Whitten replacement Frank “Poncho” Sampedro (the often breathtaking Japanese 1976 show included on last year’s Archives Volume II), thundering in arenas not long after that (Live Rust), flexing their newly revitalized muscles in the early Nineties (Weld), and showing the flannel-shirt crowd a thing or two about endurance and longevity in the mid Nineties (Year of the Horse).

Next to those projects, Way Down in the Rust Bucket isn’t especially revelatory, nor does it shed new rays of gleaming light on an under-documented part of the saga. To warm up for the 1991 arena tour heard on Weld and its noise-mayhem sibling Arc, the band played two club shows in Northern California, and this long-bootlegged tape, from the 800-seat Catalyst in the fall of 1990, documents one of them. (Young must have a fondness for that venue, since he had also played there, somewhat incognito with the Ducks, over a decade before.)In 1990, Neil Young made a resounding comeback. With the grunge tsunami about to devastate Planet Rock, Mr. buckskin jacket was celebrated more than ever by the entire English-speaking indie scene. From Pearl Jam/Nirvana to Dinosaur Jr. /Sonic Youth, all saw him as a kind of godfather of punk, the almighty God of grunge. It was the perfect moment for the Loner to reactivate his loudest combo, Crazy Horse, and release a magnificent album of dirty, uncompromising rock’n’roll. It’s an album full of raw guitars and spine-tingling feedback. Title: Ragged Glory. Recorded on November 13 that year at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, the live Way Down in the Rust Bucket (for die-hards and experts, it’s volume 11.5 of the Performance Series from the Neil Young Archives) documents preparations for the Ragged Glory world tour. It’s an impeccable Cali concert to warm up the new repertoire and revisit some immortal classics (Cinnamon Girl, Don’t Cry No Tears, Sedan Delivery, Like a Hurricane and Cortez the Killer, in a cataclysmic 11-minute version!). Surrounded by drummer Ralph Molina, guitarist Frank Sampedro and bassist Billy Talbot, Neil Young, then 45, was at the top of the raw art form he embodies. This is electric rock’n’roll powered by songs to die for. An essential unreleased archive. – Marc Zisman

Rust Never Sleeps is an album by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young and American band Crazy Horse. Most of the album was recorded live, then overdubbed in the studio. Young used the title “rust never sleeps” as a concept for his tour with Crazy Horse to avoid artistic complacency and try more progressive, theatrical approaches to performing live.Rust Never Sleeps, its aphoristic title drawn from an intended advertising slogan, was an album of new songs, some of them recorded on Neil Young’s 1978 concert tour. His strongest collection since Tonight’s the Night, its obvious antecedent was Bob Dylan’s Bringing It All Back Home, and, as Dylan did, Young divided his record into acoustic and electric sides while filling his songs with wildly imaginative imagery. The leadoff track, “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)” (repeated in an electric version at album’s end as “Hey Hey, My My [Into the Black]” with slightly altered lyrics), is the most concise and knowing description of the entertainment industry ever written; it was followed by “Thrasher,” which describes Young’s parallel artistic quest in an extended metaphor that also reflected the album’s overall theme — the inevitability of deterioration and the challenge of overcoming it. Young then spent the rest of the album demonstrating that his chief weapons against rusting were his imagination and his daring, creating an archetypal album that encapsulated his many styles on a single disc with great songs — in particular the remarkable “Powderfinger” — unlike any he had written before.

Ragged Glory is the 18th studio album by Canadian / American singer-songwriter Neil Young, and his sixth album with the band Crazy Horse. It was released by Reprise Records on September 9, 1990. Ragged Glory was voted no. 1 Grunge album of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine in 2019.Having re-established his reputation with the musically varied, lyrically enraged Freedom, Neil Young returned to being the lead guitarist of Crazy Horse for the musically homogenous, lyrically hopeful Ragged Glory. The album’s dominant sound was made by Young’s noisy guitar, which bordered on and sometimes slipped over into distortion, while Crazy Horse kept up the songs’ bright tempos. Despite the volume, the tunes were catchy, with strong melodies and good choruses, and they were given over to love, humor, and warm reminiscence. They were also platforms for often extended guitar excursions: “Love to Burn” and “Love and Only Love” ran over ten minutes each, and the album as a whole lasted nearly 63 minutes with only ten songs. Much about the record had a retrospective feel — the first two tracks, “Country Home” and “White Line,” were newly recorded versions of songs Young had played with Crazy Horse but never released in the ’70s; “Mansion on the Hill,” the album’s most accessible track, celebrated a place where “psychedelic music fills the air” and “peace and love live there still”; there was a cover of the Premiers’ garage rock oldie “Farmer John”; and “Days That Used to Be,” in addition to its backward-looking theme, borrowed the melody from Bob Dylan’s “My Back Pages” (by way of the Byrds’ arrangement), while “Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)” was the folk standard “The Water Is Wide” with new, environmentally aware lyrics. Young was not generally known as an artist who evoked the past this much, but if he could extend his creative rebirth with music this exhilarating, no one was likely to complain. – William Ruhlmann

All the kudos Neil Young earned for Rust Never Sleeps he lost for Live Rust, the double-LP live album released four months later. Live Rust was the soundtrack to Young’s concert film Rust Never Sleeps (he had wanted to give it that title, but Reprise vetoed the idea, fearing confusion with the earlier album), and likewise was recorded October 22, 1978, at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. But much of the Rust Never Sleeps album had been recorded on the same tour, and Live Rust repeated four songs from that disc; besides, since Young had released the career retrospective Decade in 1977, critics felt he was unfairly recycling his older material and repeating his new material. In retrospect, however, Live Rust, now a single 74-minute CD, comes off as an excellent Neil Young live album and career summary, starting with the early song “Sugar Mountain” and running through then-new songs like “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)” and “Powderfinger.” Young is effective in both his acoustic folksinger and hard-rocking Crazy Horse bandleader modes. The various distractions of the concert itself and the film, such as the pretentious props and cowled roadies, are absent, and what’s left is a terrific Neil Young concert recording. –William Ruhlmann

The first release from Neil Young’s long awaited Archive Performance series is Live At The Fillmore East. In 2006, Neil Young delivered another hit album, Living With War, and toured with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Thirty-six years earlier, in 1970, Young toured with CSN&Y and released his platinum album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, after which he performed a series of shows at New York City’s then-new Fillmore East with his band Crazy Horse. That concert finally made its official debut in the annals of rock history with Live At The Fillmore East, and the circle is unbroken for one of rock’s greatest singer-songwriters. The original release charted Top 15 and three Grammy® nominations, including for Best Rock Album.Live At The Fillmore East includes an extended “Down By The River” and a 16-minute “Cowgirl In The Sand” (which has previously appeared only on a ’90s import). Country barnburner “Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown” would later be heard on 1975’s Tonight’s The Night live album.

Mastered and cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood from analog master tapes prepared by John Nowland at Neil Young’s studio.

“So this is my long-winded way of suggesting that if you have any classic rock fans on your holiday list, you might want to consider giving the gift of music after all. Thanks to Neil Young’s boycott of streaming services (due, Neil says, to their poor sound quality: “AM radio kicked streaming’s ass. Analog Cassettes and 8 tracks also kicked streaming’s ass”), his music can only be accessed via a financial transaction. Because fans have to pay money to hear “Live at the Fillmore East,” and because it is a precious time capsule of a brilliant musical era, it makes the perfect holiday gift.”

Greendale, a concept album focusing on a small town family’s troubles has received much attention. The common theme throughout provides a flow and a unique song unity. The sound and fresh approach to this album has made it a great comeback for Young.”One of the most ambitious works of his career…a great artist once again at the peak of his game.” (Chicago Tribune) “Young has rarely sounded so fresh and inspired…an uncompromising artist with the courage to follow his muse.” (Chicago Sun Times) For the first time in his storied career, Neil Young has created a fictional place filled with characters and incidents and written an album about them. The album, and the place, is Greendale and the people are the Green family. The songs are among the most personal he’s ever penned, ranging from the dark and biting to the light and humorous. Still surprising and still stirring it up, Young adds a stunning new album to his place in rock history with Greendale.

There is something so historic about the earliest recordings of Neil Young with Crazy Horse that even the most devoted fans of Young and that pivotal band cannot contain their excitement when new releases are scheduled – continuing with the release of ‘EARLY DAZE’ on June 28th.

Representing the first time that the music the band performs has been collected on one album like this set, ‘EARLY DAZE’ includes some of the most iconic originals by Neil Young, and several with contributions by band guitarist Danny Whitten. It is Young’s first band after the breakup of Buffalo Springfield, and set one of the high marks of rock ‘n’ roll at the end of the 1960s when all these songs were written.

This new collection of Neil Young with Crazy Horses’ earliest recordings includes several original versions that have not been released before, along with the 7-inch mono mix of ‘Cinnamon Girl’ that was released in 1970 that includes a guitar outro not on the original LP version.

It’s amazing how Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s collaborations can seem like a lost moment in time, captured in amber. You feel it right away on their 19th studio album with opener “Song of the Seasons”: that evocative harmonica, Nils Lofgren’s sentimental accordion, Young’s voice wavering on the last half of the line “We’re so together in the way that we feel/ That we could wind up anywhere;” it’s as easy as a worn suede glove and nostalgic for a moment you don’t even know. Then again, that moment might just be the classic Harvest Moon, on which this sweet song (all about connection, a running theme on Barn) would have been right at home. It helps that Young goes all in. He has played with two-thirds of the band since 1968, and the album was recorded in circumstances about as romantic as you can get: “under a full moon, in a restored off-grid 19th century barn high up in the Rockies,” the press release details. Goosed by ragged guitar, “Heading West” gets dreamy about childhood and how your parents’ decisions change you. “Shape of You” is an out-and-out love song (“You changed my life for the better/ Wore my love like your favorite sweater”), an inspired blues roll warmed up by Billy Talbot’s lumbering bass and Young’s right-hand piano shimmy. Ditto “Tumblin’ Thru the Years,” which sounds more like it’s about the band’s connection than any romantic love, and is just about as pretty as anything Young’s ever written. It’s not all mellow and cozy, though. “Human Race” is a spitfire stomp, complete with searing guitar solo, and you can feel the frustration of Young, who has been warning of climate change for decades: “Today no one cares/ Tomorrow no one shares/ Because they all will be gone but the children.” (A ghostly chorus drifts in to chant the line “Children of the fires and floods.”) The band adopts a blues rag to chronicle Western dependence on petroleum for “Change Ain’t Never Gonna.” As Young looks both backward and forward at the same time, he’s aware it sounds familiar—but hopeful it might finally sink in. “I been singin’ this way for so long/ Riding through this storm,” he reminds us on “Welcome Back,” later warning: “Before the world has closed us in/ We might still allow for changes to be made … Before your computer turns on you.” “Don’t Forget Love” closes the album on a note of genuine hope, Young reassuringly singing, “When you’re takin’ and you could be givin’/ When you’re dyin’ and you could be livin’/ Don’t forget love.” – Shelly Ridenour

A recording of Neil Young’s surprise performance at New York’s Bottom Line on May 16, 1974 has been circulating in fan circles for decades, but now they’re finally releasing it officially as part of Young’s new official bootleg series. He calls it The Bottom Line – “Citizen Kane Jr. Blues.”In Neil Young’s long and storied career, some concerts have gained an almost epic reputation through the practice of bootlegging. Finally, the great Canadian rocker is releasing ‘bootlegged’ recordings available as vinyl versions. Now it’s the turn of the concert at the Bottom Line in New York on May 16, 1974. Citizen KANE JR. BLUES includes Pushed It Over the End, a song inspired by the kidnapping of Patti Hearst, which he called “Citizen Kane Jr. Blues” at the time, as well as live previews of Long May You Run, On the Beach, Motion Pictures (still the only surviving live performance) and Pardon My Heart

Chrome Dreams II is the 28th studio album by Canadian musician Neil Young. The album name references Chrome Dreams, a legendary Neil Young album from 1977 that had originally been scheduled for release but was shelved in favor of American Stars ‘N Bars.Chrome Dreams II was produced by The Volume Dealers (Neil Young & Niko Bolas), and features the ensemble of Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina, pedal steel guitarist and dobro player Ben Keith (Harvest, Comes A Time, Harvest Moon) and bassist Rick Rosas (Freedom, Living With War, This Note’s for You). A horn section, The Blue Note Horns, appear on one track, “Ordinary People,” while the Young People’s Chorus of New York City appear on “The Way.” Most of the recording was done live with few overdubs at Feelgood’s Garage studio near Redwood City, California, with two vintage gas pumps out front and vintage studio gear inside.

“It’s an album with a form based on some of my original recordings, with a large variety of songs, rather than one specific type of song. Where Living with War and Everybody’s Rockin’ were albums focused on one subject or style, Chrome Dreams II is more like After the Gold Rush or Freedom, with different types of songs working together to form a feeling. Now that radio formats are not as influential as they once were, it’s easier to release an album that crosses all formats with a message that runs through the whole thing, regardless of the type of song or sound.

Some early listeners have said that this album is positive and spiritual. I like to think it focuses on the human condition. Like many of my recordings, this one draws on earlier material here and there. I used to do that a lot back in the day. Some songs, like ‘Ordinary People,’ need to wait for the right time. I think now is the right time for that song and it lives well with the new songs I have written in the past few months. I had a blast making this music.”

Chrome Dreams is a collection of demos and outtakes taken from Neil Young’s American Stars and Bars sessions, and although this album never had an official release, it’s been made widespread through underground manufacturing. Any fears as to sound defects should be laid aside, however – this release is remarkably close to official quality audio. Many tracks on Chrome Dreams are otherwise unavailable in studio form, noticeably including the live regulars “Pocahontas”, “Sedan Delivery” and “Powderfinger”. For Neil Young zealots, these alone would make Chrome Dreams^ a definite purchase. But add to that “Stringman”, Young’s touching ode to Stephen Stills, as well as the emotional “Hold Back the Tears.” As any Young fan could tell from this list, Chrome Dreams is quite an album. The fine track list, together with the rarity value, should make this a high priority on the purchase list of all Neil Young fans or, indeed, all rock fans.In the ’70s, Neil Young got in the habit of creating some of his best work and keeping it to himself. In addition to projects like the long-shelved country-rock album Homegrown (recorded between 1974 and 1975 but not officially released until 2020) and the sublime 1976 solo sessions that were ultimately packaged as 2017 album The Hitchhiker, Young also tracked an album titled Chrome Dreams that would have a highly uncommon trajectory for the next 40-odd years. Made up of 12 songs recorded between 1974 and 1977, many of which became some of the most loved in Young’s repertoire, Chrome Dreams was considered for release in 1977, but was instead reconfigured with different versions of some of the same tunes and many others for Young’s eighth proper solo effort American Stars ‘n Bars. The flow, atmosphere, and overall impact of Chrome Dreams was different, however, intimate and personally derived but still mysterious. Bootleggers got hold of the recordings and issued many different illicit versions of Chrome Dreams over the years, and Young even went so far as to make Chrome Dreams II in 2007, when the first chapter of the series was still living primarily as an obscure collector’s item traded between the more obsessive of his fans. All of the songs from Chrome Dreams eventually surfaced in one form or another, but the first officially released version of the album is full of slight variations and differences in now-familiar songs, standing as one of the more famous “lost albums” in rock history. While the versions of classic Neil tunes like moody rocker “Like a Hurricane,” “Captain Kennedy,” and the beautifully searching “Look Out for My Love” are identical to the way they appeared on different albums in Young’s catalog, the dream-like rumble of “Sedan Delivery” (which appeared in a different form on Rust Never Sleeps) and the wistful American Stars ‘n Bars ballad “Hold Back the Tears” both appear in recordings unique to Chrome Dreams. Similarly, “Stringman,” Young’s soft-hearted ode to his former bandmate Stephen Stills, appeared in a different form on his 1993 Unplugged album than the thoughtful storytelling ballad here. There are subtle variations to other better-known songs as well, among them “Pocahontas” and “Powderfinger.” While these subtleties might not register for the casual fan, Young devotees are probably already aware of the legacy and niche cultural importance of Chrome Dreams and will appreciate the specifics of the listening experience, even if the songs have become less obscured since they were first put to tape. – Fred Thomas

The show rounded off a seminal year for Young who had released the ‘After The Gold Rush’ record just 3 months earlier in September which followed on from the ‘D’ej`a Vu’ album he recorded as part of Crosby, Still, Nash & Young in March of the same year. This show is a never before heard recording with Young playing solo on vocals, acoustic guitar, piano and harmonica. Young played two solo acoustic shows at Carnegie Hall that week.Even though Neil Young fans have something to celebrate almost every month these days, October 2021 is set to be special, with the launch of a new collection of unreleased material. As the name suggests, the Neil Young Official Bootleg Series focuses on live material, hitherto only available in bootleg form, but now officially released at last. The fun begins with a solo concert by the Loner, given in New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall on 4 December 1970. It was an intense time for the Canadian. A few weeks after Everybody Knows This is Nowhere came out in May 1969, Neil Young signed a lucrative deal with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, which gave rise to the album D’ej`a Vu, a dreamlike hippy piece which leapt to the top of the charts and made the foursome global stars. Amid this feverish whirl, he took advantage of his fame to bring out After the Goldrush in midsummer 1970, his third solo work which contains some of the most beautiful songs he ever recorded. The record was mostly made in his house in Topanga Canyon, California. A perfect blend of rock, folk and country, he took it on tour at the end of that year, travelling solo, and playing a date in the Big Apple. The tracklist from Carnegie Hall 1970 mixes songs from Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and brand-new material from After the Goldrush. Neil Young even offers the audience a taste of the follow-up in the form of Old Man, which was to be the opening track for his famous Harvest, which came out in February 1972. Over a long night, a purely acoustic set (one piano, one guitar) can wear a little thin. But Neil Young’s songs from this period are such masterpieces that it’s impossible to get bored with them: we are captivated by this colourful, melodic, rural ride for the full hour-and-a-half-plus runtime. – Marc Zisman

Six and a half years later, Comes a Time finally was the Neil Young album for the millions of fans who had loved Harvest, an acoustic-based record with country overtones and romantic, autobiographical lyrics, and many of those fans returned to the fold, enough to make Comes a Time Young’s first Top Ten album since Harvest. He signaled the album’s direction with the leadoff track, “Goin’ Back,” and its retrospective theme augmented with an orchestral backup and the deliberate beat familiar from his number one hit “Heart of Gold.” Of course, Young remained sly about this retrenchment. “I feel like goin’ back,” he sang, but added, “back where there’s nowhere to stay.” Doubtless he had no intention of staying with this style, but for the length of the album, melodies, love lyrics, lush arrangements, and steel guitar solos dominated, and Young’s vocals were made more accessible by being paired with Nicolette Larson’s harmonies. Larson’s own version of Young’s “Lotta Love,” released shortly after the one heard here, became a Top Ten hit single. Other highlights included the reflective “Already One,” which treats the unusual subject of the nature of a divorced family, the ironic “Field of Opportunity,” and a cover of Ian Tyson’s folk standard “Four Strong Winds” (a country Top Ten hit for Bobby Bare in 1965). –William Ruhlmann

If there’s one thing you can rely on in the wild world of rock’n’roll, it’s that Neil Young never ceases to surprise his listeners. In the last 55 years, in which he has released albums, this is a constant. On his new album “Before And After”, Young approaches a completely eclectic collection of mostly obscure songs like a painter approaches a new color palette. From a wide range of his originals, Young selects favorites from his playbook, like a journey into his music history, and usually performs them alone, taking a solo acoustic journey to a new place. The individual songs merge into each other and form a continuous flow that adds up to a 48-minute, pure and intimate listening experience. Produced by Lou Adler and Neil Young and mixed by Young and Niko Bolas, aka The Volume Dealers, this album is unlike any other he has released so far. Below is a foretaste of a music video for “Before and After, Pt. 1: I’m the Ocean/Homefires/Burned”.

On Before And After, Neil Young chooses favorites from his playbook like a trip into his music history and performs them mostly alone on a solo acoustic journey. Each of the songs blend into each other and morph with mesmerizing clarity into a continuous flow of music creating a 48-minute pure and intimate listening experience. The 13-track album spans Neil’s career, from his early Buffalo Springfield contribution, “Burned” (1966) to the recent “Don’t Forget Love”(2021) and includes the previously unreleased song “If You Got Love”.Neil Young continues to exploit his massive catalog of original songs in innovative ways. On his 45th studio album, he revisits 12 songs—mixed as a single track—that stretch as far back as his days with Buffalo Springfield. Young is clear about Before and After’s intentions: “Songs from my life recently recorded create a music montage with no beginnings or endings. The feeling is captured, not in pieces but as a whole piece … music defies shuffling, digital organization, separation. Only for listening.” The constant subject throughout is the life affirming powers of having and giving love. With few exceptions the critical segues between tracks are seamless and unobtrusive; opener “I’m the Ocean,” a classic Young chord progression that was originally on Mirror Ball, easily blends into “Homefires”—first released on Neil Young Archives Volume II 1972-1976. Young is the entire band on this single track, taken from a 96 kHz/24-bit digital source. (Perhaps as an inside joke, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy is listed in the credits as being an “Electric guitar & Amplifier tech.”) He switches from acoustic guitar, harmonica and piano to pump organ occasionally, as he does in the transition between “On the Way Home” to “If You Got Love,” an unreleased track from the 1983 Trans sessions. With Young’s voice as a constant, there is an undeniable sameness to this continuous design. Except for “Comes a Time,” he avoids the hits and concentrates on songs that he’s felt were unjustly neglected in the past, or that he’s found new meaning in today. That’s audibly true in a new version of “When I Hold You in My Arms,” his paean to life’s inevitable changes. Originally on Are You Passionate?, there’s now a renewed certainly as Young brings new fervor to familiar lines: “Old heart’s going up/ Old heart’s coming down/ My feelings going up/ My feelings coming down/ You gotta hold onto someone in this life.” – Robert Baird

Are You Passionate? is the 24th studio album by Canadian / American musician Neil Young, the only album to feature Booker T. & the M.G.’s, and his eighth with Crazy Horse, released on April 9, 2002 as a double LP and as a single CD. It represents Young’s foray into soul music, not sounding like anything he had previously released. Exceptions are rocker “Goin’ Home”, recorded with Crazy Horse, and the brooding “Let’s Roll”, a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The album ends with “She’s a Healer”, an extended jam.The track “Gateway of Love” is listed on the back cover, but not included on the album. The song has never been released but was played in concert with Crazy Horse during 28 of 29 dates of their European tour in 2001.[3] A bootleg recording of the performance at Rotterdam Ahoy Sportpaleis, Rotterdam (July 24, 2001) exists in which the song runs 8:36 minutes.

This is the third volume of the Neil Young Archives series of box sets produced by Neil Young. A definitive, comprehensive, and chronological record of his entire body of released work. – Volume III covers the period from 1976 through 1987, an extremely productive and musically diverse period in Neil Young’s career that included the release of several classic albums including Comes A Time, Rust Never Sleeps, Live Rust and Trans. Spanning 11 years, this Archives box set covers more years, and includes more music and video than the previous two volumes in the Archives series. – The 17 CDs in the box set contains 15 completely unreleased songs, and 121 unreleased versions (original versions, alternate versions, different mixes, live tracks). Included are the unreleased albums Oceanside Countryside, Johnny’s Island and Summer Songs. 14 hours of audio. For Neil Young, the early to mid-’70s was a time marked by his first taste of an initial revulsion to superstardom. In the wake of the success of Harvest, Young went on an often unhappy journey of self-discovery and reappraisal brought on by the end of his relationship with actress Carrie Snodgress and the overdose deaths of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry. All of this was refracted through the moody lens of a trio of studio records known as the “Ditch Trilogy”: On the Beach, Tonight’s the Night and Zuma. This epochal period in Young’s story has now been sweepingly documented by Neil Young Archives Vol. II (1972-1976), a 10-part box set, arranged chronologically, whose first run sold out on Young’s website in November 2020. Best of all, its 139 tracks, 49 of which were unreleased and 12 previously unheard new songs, are all presented here in the brilliant high-resolution sound that’s a hallmark of the Neil Young Archives.

While ten albums may sound like too much Young even for collectors and longtime fans, Archives Vol. II includes three previously released albums: Homegrown from 1974-75 (released in 2020), and the live albums, Tuscaloosa (2019)—a much cheerier document from the same ’73 Harvest tour that produced the troubled live album, Time Fades Away—and Roxy: Tonight’s The Night Live (2018) recorded the same year on the Sunset Strip with the Crazy Horse rhythm section joined by guitarist/pianist Nils Lofgren and pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith in a band Young called the Santa Monica Flyers.

The new songs, many of which were previously known to collectors, include a piano and dobro-led meditation on spirituality set to a steady push-pull 7/8 rhythm entitled “Goodbye Christians on the Shore.” “Sweet Joni” is a rough-hewn tribute to Young’s fellow Canadian who makes a guest appearance later in this set in her song, “Raised on Robbery.” Deeper in there’s another quartet of new songs headlined by “Frozen Man,” where the singer wonders “who could live inside this frozen man” while a tale unspools that parallels Young’s emotional struggles and wanderings during this very fraught decade. As for revelations among the live recordings on Archives Vol. II, there’s Odeon Budokan, a mashup of unreleased live material from a pair of 1976 shows from Budokan Hall in Tokyo and London’s Hammersmith Odeon. By then, Young had recovered his confidence and emotional equilibrium and is rocking out with Crazy Horse on a familiar set that finishes with an epic version of “Cortez the Killer.” Most of the collection’s greatest pleasures lie in unreleased versions of previously released tunes. One of the albums here, The Old Homestead opens and closes with unreleased versions of “Love/Art Blues,” a tune first officially heard on the live CSNY 1974 album and whose lyrics perfectly encapsulate the dilemma Young found himself in during the period covered by Archives Vol. II 1972-1976: “I’ve got the love art blues/ Don’t know which one to choose/ There’s really something to lose/ With these love art blues.” – Robert Baird

Given Neil Young’s range and output, it’s just as helpful to describe what World Record isn’t before getting to what it is: It’s not a previously unreleased studio album from the 1970s; an instrumental guitar album a la Le Noise or Arc; an Old Ways-style country album; a romantic stroll through Harvest Moon balladry; a Devo-inspired electronic rock album like Trans; or a mad-as-hell-not-gonna-take-it-anymore rager Ragged Glory.World Record, though, is notably ragged in its own way. Sounding like the band borrowed a friend’s two-car garage despite being recorded at co-producer (with Young) Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studio in Malibu, it’s a stripped down, stubbornly direct missive to a world in which Young has spent nearly eighty years.

A hint of what’s to come on his millionth studio album, in fact, arrives before he plays the first note. We hear a little studio chatter, drummer Ralph Molina counts off the beat and Young and Crazy Horse casually enter into a piano-driven mid-tempo song called “Love Earth.” Sounding duct-taped together, the recording moves with a loping grace as Young opens with a couplet that’s, well, pretty basic. “Love Earth/ And your love comes back to you/ Love Earth/ Such an easy thing to do!”

What follows is an exploration of the Youngian worldview as moderated by Rubin and featuring Molina, guitarist Nils Lofgren and bassist Billy Talbot: Songs and lyrics about old and new love, a fragile planet, dreams both hopeful and dying, the end of war, the toll of strife, blue skies, sparkling waters, the rising and falling of the sun and “roads we left behind.” A 15-minute muffler-free song about the morality—and thrill—of driving a gas-guzzling old Chevrolet? You betcha.

This is the sound of Young doing Young—with the addition of the occasional pump organ and whatever multi-instrumentalist Lofgrin harnesses, be it lap steel, slide guitar, accordion or, on the glorious “The Wonder Won’t Wait,” what liner notes call “tap sweep percussion.”

Though a relatively varied mix of Young bangers and weepers, World Record is united by its seemingly casual approach. Molina or Young count off many songs, an indication that the band was working live in a room and not swapping digital files.

One of the least precious records in his deep catalog, World Record seems to abhor sentimentality while embracing a screw-it-let’s-let-loose ethos. The approach, however, does lead to an occiasional clunker. “Walkin’ On The Road (To The Future),” opens with a telegraphed rhyme—”Walkin’ on the road to the future is scary/ We want to make the best of the past and not tarry”—that could have been penned by a Neil Young AI song generator.

But, really, such critiques are petty at this point. This is Young in his natural habitat, gazing and grazing as the world around him keeps spinning. – Randall Roberts

Neil Young made a point of listing the recording dates of the songs on American Stars ‘n Bars; the dates even appeared on the LP labels. They revealed that the songs had been cut at four different sessions dating back to 1974. But even without such documentation, it would have been easy to tell that the album was a stylistic hodgepodge, its first side consisting of country-tinged material featuring steel guitar and fiddle, plus backup vocals from Linda Ronstadt and the then-unknown Nicolette Larson, while the four songs on the second side varied from acoustic solo numbers like “Will to Love” to raging rockers such as “Like a Hurricane.” Just as apparent was the album’s unevenness: side one consisted of lightweight compositions, while side two had more ambitious ones, with “Will to Love,” for example, extending the romantic metaphor of a salmon swimming upstream across seven minutes. The album’s saving grace was “Like a Hurricane,” one of Young’s classic hard rock songs and guitar workouts, and a perennial concert favorite. Without it, American Stars ‘n Bars would have been one of Young’s least memorable albums, and since it turned up the following year on the compilation Decade, the LP was rendered inessential.

During the 2014 promo campaign for Pono, his high-end digital audio device, Neil Young called his forthcoming album A Letter Home “an art project,” which is an appropriate term for this curious collection of covers from his contemporaries. It’s not so much that the choice of songs is unusual — nearly all of them are from the ’60s and ’70s, years when Young was also active, but a handful (“Crazy,” “Since I Met You Baby,” “I Wonder If I Care as Much”) date from the late ’50s or early ’60s — but the recording method. Young headed down to Jack White’s Third Man Records in Nashville where Jack installed a refurbished Voice-O-Graph booth, a device designed to allow a user to “Make Your Own Record” by cutting a song or message directly to vinyl. These contraptions were designed in 1947 and were once a common sight in arcades and fairs but they died away in the ’70s, turning into an artifact of a weird old Americana beloved by both Young and White. Neil decided to use the Voice-O-Graph to record a full album, an experiment that’s strictly about the method of recording, not the music itself. By design, the Voice-O-Graph allows for no overdubs — it captures everything that happens in the booth and nothing more — so the performances are intimate and sometimes rushed, qualities that are alternately enhanced and undercut by the thin, crackly recording. This aural affectation can be affecting — in particular, his readings of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain” and “If You Can Read My Mind” are quite sweet, as is Bob Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country,” while there’s a genuine pang of pathos lying in Bert Jansch’s “Needle of Death” — but the trebly, wavy audio can also seem cacophonous, whether it’s capturing Neil alone (Bruce Springsteen’s “My Hometown”) or in tandem with White (a version of Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” that always seems just on the verge of falling apart, which could be perceived as a compliment depending on your view). Usually, the flaws of A Letter Home can be pegged on the archaic recording technology — only a couple of performances feel shambolic — but Young is also having fun with what the Voice-O-Graph meant, opening the album with a wry, winding spoken letter to his departed mother and then addressing another missive to her later on the record. These words are simultaneously sentimental and impish, a wink to the audience that Young is in on the joke but also doesn’t quite consider A Letter Home a joke. Sure, there’s artifice and humor here, but there’s also heart, and this blend of emotions is what makes A Letter Home one of Neil Young’s quintessential, endearingly odd records. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine

In the 15 months between the release of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and After the Gold Rush, Neil Young issued a series of recordings in different styles that could have prepared his listeners for the differences between the two LPs. His two compositions on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album Déjà Vu, “Helpless” and “Country Girl,” returned him to the folk and country styles he had pursued before delving into the hard rock of Everybody Knows; two other singles, “Sugar Mountain” and “Oh, Lonesome Me,” also emphasized those roots. But “Ohio,” a CSNY single, rocked as hard as anything on the second album. After the Gold Rush was recorded with the aid of Nils Lofgren, a 17-year-old unknown whose piano was a major instrument, turning one of the few real rockers, “Southern Man” (which had unsparing protest lyrics typical of Phil Ochs), into a more stately effort than anything on the previous album and giving a classic tone to the title track, a mystical ballad that featured some of Young’s most imaginative lyrics and became one of his most memorable songs. But much of After the Gold Rush consisted of country-folk love songs, which consolidated the audience Young had earned through his tours and recordings with CSNY; its dark yet hopeful tone matched the tenor of the times in 1970, making it one of the definitive singer/songwriter albums, and it has remained among Young’s major achievements. –William Ruhlmann

In 1984, Geffen Records sued Neil Young on the grounds that he had submitted uncharacteristic, uncommercial records to the label. By the time a settlement had been reached, Young had been on the road with a country band called the International Harvesters for over a year and recorded a revamped version of Old Ways, a 1982 recording originally rejected by Geffen that was cut in the style of Harvest and Comes a Time, but with a stronger country leaning. Young depends heavily on friends, especially for vocals — Waylon Jennings sings harmony on six out of the ten tracks, and one of the others is a duet with Willie Nelson. Though populated by cowboys and country references, Young’s take on the genre is typically idiosyncratic, including a reworked version of his autobiography in “Get Back to the Country,” a cover of the 1956 Gogi Grant hit “The Wayward Wind,” and the uncategorizable “Misfits,” which portrays astronauts watching Muhammad Ali fights on television in space. Old Ways is not a great Neil Young album and at the time of its release served to alienate him even further from his audience, but it has its moments. – William Ruhlmann

One of the best releases of 2025 so far happens to be this lazy, breezy, folk-country gem from 1977. Oceanside Countryside is part of Neil Young’s Analog Originals project, designed to preserve the sound quality of the original masters, and it’s a real joy to dive into this era and hear anything new (or in this case, newly reconstituted).Young has more unreleased “lost” albums in his backlog than other artists have regular releases, and wading through his catalog can be a bit confusing for the beginner. Oceanside Countryside was recorded between May and December of 1977, preceding the release of 1978’s Comes A Time. In fact, three songs (“Goin’ Back,” “Field of Opportunity,” and the tremendous “Human Highway”) appear on both. The album also shares more than a little bit of DNA with 1980’s Hawks & Doves; not only do both contain the wonderful “Lost in Space” and the elegiac “Captain Kenedy,” but they each have one folk side (here, it’s Oceanside) and one country side (literally, Countryside), as well as a rather short running length.

Fans as well might be confused, as there is already a section of Archives Vol. III titled Oceanside Countryside. These mixes are the original versions done at the time of recording, and this is the intended running order of the original album before it was shelved.

The overall experience is a bit like diving into the director’s cut for a film you’re obsessed with. You’re likely already in love with “Pocahontas,” but this mix is different from the one on 1979’s Rust Never Sleeps, with more backing vocals by Young himself. And this drumless version of “Goin’ Back,” with the acoustic instruments buoyed atop a bed of synthesizers, is a revelation.

Of the songs that will likely be new even to super diehards, the single-entendre, straight-up country rebound number “Field of Opportunity” is the only real pickle. Rarely did Young jump so headfirst into old time country, though it’s neither trying to be Chet Atkins countrypolitan or overly rough-hewn. Levon Helm drums a bit, and Ben Keith lends much ambience with his pedal steel. The version of “Dance Dance Dance” is similarly whiskey-soaked—a woozy midtempo and fiddle-heavy take.

You can always count on Neil Young to surprise his listeners, even when simply digging through his own archives. Oceanside Countryside is an introspective, dusty, and drunken delight. – Mike McGonigal

BARN, the new Neil Young/Crazy Horse album was recorded in a remote, restored, 19th century log barn. This musical family has played together for a half century, yet they continue creating new music. Neil and the Horse fans have long shouted for “more barn” and here it is… 10 new songs that capture the wild, rock and roll spirit, the idiosyncratic raw sound and the lyrical beauty that epitomizes a classic NYCH collaboration. The last song appeared on the last morning and was recorded just an hour later during a pounding hailstorm and during the full moon. The album was recorded this summer over a handful of days. The ten new songs encompass all that Neil Young with Crazy Horse are known for, beautiful romantic acoustic ballads, powerhouse electric rockers and insightful rollicking tunes that stick with you. Niko Bolas was parked adjacent to the barn, in an exquisite analog mobile recording truck, Le Mobile ready to capture and mix the album on the spot. Produced by The Volume Dealers – Neil Young and Niko Bolas, the album will be released on vinyl, CD, cassette and digitally (including h-res audio on NYA). There will also be a deluxe edition that will include the LP, CD. and Blu-ray film.Special edition of the album includes 6 photographs from the Barn sessions.

Neil Young – Mirror Ball (2026)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 57:16 minutes | 2,15 GB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Reprise

Mirror Ball is the 23rd studio album by Canadian-American musician Neil Young, and features members of American rock band Pearl Jam. It was released on June 27, 1995, through Reprise Records.

Pearl Jam fans have fresh reason to celebrate. Neil Young, the legendary Canadian rocker, is reissuing his 1995 album Mirror Ball on vinyl, with Pearl Jam’s raw energy front and center. Dropping May 22, 2026, this release brings back one of the most electric collaborations in rock history.

Recorded in Seattle during the height of grunge, Mirror Ball captures Neil Young teaming up with Pearl Jam – the band that defined the ’90s alternative scene. Young brought his poetic songwriting and guitar fire, while Eddie Vedder’s vocals and the band’s rhythm section added that gritty, live-wire punch. For young listeners in the U.S. and Canada, it’s a gateway to understanding how West Coast rock evolved from folk roots to stadium anthems. Why does this matter now? Vinyl is booming among Gen Z and younger millennials, who crave the tactile joy of records spinning tales from rock’s golden eras. North American fans, from Seattle to Toronto, connect deeply with this story – Young’s Canadian influence crashing into Pearl Jam’s Pacific Northwest birthplace. It’s not just nostalgia; it’s a reminder of music’s power to unite generations.

Pearl Jam formed in Seattle in 1990, rising from the grunge explosion alongside Nirvana and Soundgarden. Their debut Ten (1991) exploded with hits like “Alive” and “Jeremy,” tackling heavy themes like youth angst and social issues. By 1995, they were arena-fillers, but collaborating with Neil Young showed their versatility beyond loud guitars.

Neil Young, born in 1945 in Toronto, has been a rock constant for over 60 years. From Buffalo Springfield to solo hits like “Heart of Gold,” he’s influenced everyone from CSNY to punk acts. His decision to record Mirror Ball with Pearl Jam was bold – no overdubs, pure live takes in the studio. The result? Tracks like “Downtown” and “Peace and Love” that feel urgent today.

This reissue symbolizes rock’s enduring legacy in North America. Seattle’s grunge scene put the region on the map, drawing kids from coast to coast to mosh pits and mics. Young, with his protest songs and environmental activism, added depth.
