“Seventy” is the thirtieth studio album by Australian musician Paul Kelly, released on November 7, 2025. The title of the album refers to Kelly’s age.

“Seventy” is Paul Kelly’s latest collection of stories in musical form, which has conquered the top of the Australian charts. The album takes up the age-old human tradition of gathering together to share stories and “keep the darkness away”; it begins and ends with the simple request “Tell us a story…“. The songs range from intimate portraits of friendship and longing to quiet moments of wonder.

The deluxe version contains a re-recording of the Hoagy-Carmichael classic “STARDUST”.

At the age of 70, Kelly takes stock, but remains “in the middle of the action” and presents all facets of his masterful songwriting art. Among the highlights are “Rita Wrote A Letter”, which almost 30 years later ties in with the world of “How to Make Gravy”, as well as a breathtaking band arrangement of W. B. Yeats’ “Sailing to Byzantium”.

Backed by his longtime band, “Seventy” reaffirms why we need stories the most when the world seems uncertain – a deeply human album by Australia’s masterful storyteller.

The first words you hear on Paul Kelly’s new album “Seventy” are ‘Tell us a story.’ The last words you hear are ‘Put another big log on the fire.’ Yes, we’re back in the kellyverse of love, loss, legend, wit, poetry and tales tall and true. In the room with his band and ‘the ones he loves the best’, passing the stories and jokes around, going all around the world while the storm howls outside the door and above the roof all snug and tight. Where else would you rather be?

Paul Kelly’s first Christmas album is an extraordinary 22-song double collection that travels across the centuries, from a Latin hymn to well-known carols, from a traditional Irish folk ballad to new Kelly music written for Christmas poems. There are songs with an unmistakable local flavour like Three Drovers and Swing Around the Sun, and a sparkling new version of one of the greatest Australian Christmas songs of them all, Kelly’s own How to Make Gravy.

The album is delivered by Kelly and his band with a big cast of Christmas helpers including vocalists Vika and Linda Bull, Marlon Williams, Kasey Chambers, Alice Keath, Emily Lubitz, Lior and Emma Donovan, with contributions from the Kelly clan.

The writer, radio and TV presenter Waleed Aly also makes an appearance, reading verses from The Qur’an that tell the story of Mary and Jesus.

Kelly says: “I’ve chosen songs I love, which led me often to wander off the well-worn path, then chosen singers I thought best suited to them.”

The albums finds new ways to explore Christmas favourites too, with a Hawaiian flavour for Silent Night and an astonishing performance by Marlon Williams singing Tapu Te Po (O Holy Night) in the M?ori languge.

Folk, classical, soul, carols and hymns, rock and roll. Get ready for an album that’s going to become a part of celebrating an Australian Christmas for many years to come.

Australia’s greatest and most enduring songwriter, Paul Kelly, collaborates with award-winning Jazz pianist and composer, Paul Grabowsky, for reinterpretations of Paul Kelly classics, plus a cover of Cole Porter’s ‘Every Time We Say Goodbye’.Paul Kelly and Paul Grabowsky are each deservedly regarded as masters of their chosen crafts. Kelly is counted amongst Australia’s most lauded wordsmiths, while Grabowsky is one of our most decorated note-smiths.

After their first collaborative performance at UKARIA in the Adelaide Hills in 2018, Kelly and Grabowsky have continued their creative partnership to record a new album.

Paul Kelly and Paul Grabowsky share a unique working relationship that began over a quarter of a century ago as they both explain:

Paul Grabowsky: Paul K and I first met in 1995 when I was making a series of television programs for the ABC about different aspect of music-making called ‘Access All Areas’. We filmed two different segments with him. One paired him with some throat singers from Tuva on a version of ‘Maralinga’ , shot somewhere near Woomera on a train full of artists on their way to WOMAD. The other was a one-on-one interview which we shot in St Kilda; we talked about song writing. I was struck by the fact that Paul is driven by a similar impulse to my own, namely an ongoing fascination with music in its many forms. This deep curiosity has in recent years seen him explore different genres, introduce his love of poetry to his wide and receptive fan base, and record with me.

Forty years into his career, legendary Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly is still finding new ways to write songs. On his 24th studio album, he continues his recent penchant for pairing music with poems, some his own (“A Bastard Like Me”, a tribute to Aboriginal activist Charles Perkins), others by the likes of Dylan Thomas (“And Death Shall Have No Dominion”), Walt Whitman (“With Animals”) and Philip Larkin (“The Trees”). Linking them all thematically is the natural world and the human place within it, Kelly’s nasally vocal twang guiding beautifully constructed folk songs that oscillate between playful (“God’s Grandeur”), haunting (“Bound to Follow”), cinematic (“Morning Storm”) and plaintive (“Seagulls of Seattle”).
