Smokey Robinson – Yes It’s You Lady (1982/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Mon, 14 Sep 2026 07:02:40 +0000

Yes It’s You Lady is a 1982 album by American singer Smokey Robinson. As 1981’s Being with You it was produced by George Tobin and recorded and mixed at Studio Sound Recorders, North Hollywood, California. It was released on the Motown sub-label Tamla. The album was peaking at #33 in Billboard pop charts, and at #6 on the R&B charts. The two follow-up singles to 1981’s chart success’ “Being with you” were strangely no Robinson compositions: “Tell Me Tomorrow” peaked at #33 Billboard and #3 R&B charts, “Old Fashioned Love” at #60 Billboard and #17 R&B charts. The third and final single, Robinson’s “Yes It’s You Lady” only peaked at #107 Billboard, without entering the R&B charts.Surprisingly, having scored his biggest solo success with the self-penned, self-produced Being with You, Smokey Robinson turned to an outside producer and outside writers for the followup. Both of the singles from Yes It’s You Lady, which was produced by George Tobin, “Tell Me Tomorrow” (number three R&B, number 33 Pop) and “Old Fashioned Love” (number 17 R&B, number 60 Pop) were mid-tempo rhythm numbers written by Gary Goetzman and Mike Piccirillo. Robinson’s own compositions, notably the title track, which would have made a perfect follow-up to “Being with You,” were de-emphasized. The result was a retreat from the careful career-building Robinson had been engaged in since 1979; the album peaked at only number 33 after three straight Top 20 LPs. It was as though, having established himself as a solo voice, Robinson was now content to be “Cruisin’.” ~~AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – What Love Has…Joined Together (1970/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Mon, 14 Sep 2026 07:02:34 +0000

This top 10 R&B concept album from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles contains nothing but covers of love songs by Burt Bacharach, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Beatles and others. Produced by Smokey Robinson, What Love Has…Joined Together was one of the most rare albums in the Motown catalogue, for years out of print and almost impossible to find.A stunning concept album by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles that should have fared better. Notables wrote the six songs, all love ballads: Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Berry Gordy, Frank Wilson, Bacharach & David, Lennon & McCartney, and Smokey himself. Every selection is a wedding song, and Smokey caresses the lyrics like they were newborns. The heavenly harmonies of the Miracles – Ronald White, Bobby Rogers, Pete Moore, and Claudette Robinson – touch the soul. When they sing Brenda Holloway’s “You Made Me So Very Happy,” you don’t just hear the words; for five minutes and four seconds you experience what lovers feel. The harmonies on “What Love Has…” are overwhelming, almost overkill. Smokey drenches more soul onto Marvin Gaye’s “If This World Was Mine” then the master himself. The lush arrangements by Smokey and Jerry Long will make you dizzy.

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – One Dozen Roses (1971/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Mon, 14 Sep 2026 07:02:23 +0000

Released in 1971 but unavailable on CD for many years, One Dozen Roses from Smokey Robinson & The Miracles includes the reappearance of the huge hit song The Tears Of A Clown, a multi-million selling number one single in both the US and the UK, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002. The song also holds the distinction of being the Miracles’ first (and only) number one hit with Smokey Robinson as lead singer. One of their better latter-period albums. Though the singles (“The Tears of a Clown,” “I Don’t Blame You At All,” the lovely “Satisfaction”) were the focal points of the set, the real gem is “No Wonder Love’s a Wonder,” a haunting, socially conscious ballad where Smokey Robinson speaks the lyrics as the Miracles harmonize in the background. It marked one of the few times Robinson ever engaged in social commentary. –AllMusic Review by John Lowe

Smokey Robinson – Touch The Sky (1983/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Mon, 14 Sep 2026 05:03:14 +0000

Smokey Robinson took back the production reins from George Tobin and reinstated his producing/arranging partnership with Sonny Burke for Touch The Sky. The two took a more rhythmic approach, with Burke contributing drums and synthesizers. R&B listeners responded, notably on the title track (#68 R&B) and “I’ve Made Love To You A Thousand Times” (#8 R&B), but Robinson was shut out of the Hot 100, and as a result Touch The Sky continued his slide in LP sales, peaking at only #50 on the Pop chart, although it hit #8 R&B.

Smokey Robinson – Smokey & Friends (2014/2025) [FLAC 24bit/44,1kHz]

mqs — Mon, 14 Sep 2026 05:03:08 +0000

Smokey & Friends is a studio album by musician Smokey Robinson. It was released in August 2014 under Verve Records. Reaching #12 on Billboard’s album chart, it stands as Smokey’s second most successful solo album.Smokey & Friends seems like it’s as much an American Idol judges and mentors project — or a sequel to Randy Jackson’s Music Club — than a celebration of Smokey Robinson’s career. Produced by Jackson, Smokey duets with his guests on fresh versions of popular compositions he wrote during the early ’60s through the early ’80s, popularized by Smokey himself — with and without the Miracles — or other artists, namely the Temptations and Marvin Gaye. The array of vocal matchups alternates between suitable and, yeah, peculiar. For an instance of the latter, Steven Tyler wails, screeches, and ad libs all over “You Really Got a Hold on Me” while Nicole Scherzinger, a prominent background voice, takes a reverent approach that verges on solemn. Not only is it a poor matchup with Smokey’s typically sweet and steady delivery, but it’s the song where the recording method — the vocalists didn’t record together — is most obvious. Smokey gets the best results with the veteran R&B women, Ledisi (“Ooh Baby Baby”) and Mary J. Blige (“Being with You”), while pairings with the likes of Elton John (“The Tracks of My Tears”) and James Taylor (“Ain’t That Peculiar”) are livelier than expected but forgettable. The noteworthy guests aren’t limited to singers. Among the backing musicians are Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, John Mayer, Cornelius Mims, Jim Keltner, and Jackson himself. The instrumental support is mostly middle-of-the-road adult contemporary R&B without any conscious attempt to sound retro. One deviation — “Get Ready,” where Smokey is joined by Gary Barlow — slathers modern dance-pop coloring to dismal effect. Compared to the originals, or even the better covers released during the intervening years, these versions are pleasant if sterile. Had everyone recorded together, the set would have at least benefited from some unforced spontaneity. – Andy Kellman

Smokey Robinson – Being With You (1981/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Mon, 14 Sep 2026 05:02:59 +0000

Smokey Robinson’s most successful post-Miracles solo album, Being With You has sold over 900,000 copies and peaked at number 10 in the US, propelled by the million-selling hit single title track. Seeking a more contemporary, modern sound, Robinson sought out the hot producer of the day, George Tobin (Tiffany, Kim Carnes) to work his magic behind the board.Back in the late ’70s, Smokey Robinson made a great comeback with his 1979 hit “Cruisin’.” With his broadened lyrical style and more knowing in his voice, the aesthetic powered such album classics as Where There’s Smoke and Warm Thoughts. 1981’s Being With You, in effect, ended the ride, but the hits more than continued. The single “Being With You” is a deft update of Robinson’s ’60s naïveté and is certainly a great pop record. The same can’t be said for most of the tracks here. Handing over the production reigns to George Tobin, some of Robinson’s quirks and musical trademarks are lost to polished and radio-friendly production. The songs aren’t great here, either. The didactic and reggae-tinged “Food for Thought” just comes off silly. For the most part, Robinson doesn’t offer much credible pure romance here. “As You Do,” “Can’t Fight Love,” and “Who’s Sad” all fail to make an impression. That’s not true of the last track. The oddly affecting “I Hear the Children Crying” has him getting emotional, as his final note on the song seals the deal. Despite Robinson’s paean to the “kids,” his songwriting skills are a little off here. While a big hit is here and Robinson’s in fine form, Being With You is a letdown in comparison to the two efforts before this.
