Sonic Youth – Washing Machine (1995/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 11:08:17 +0000

Sonic Youth’s ninth album Washing Machine is the first record to almost exclusively feature Kim on guitar rather than bass, and contains some of their lengthiest material since “Goo” and “Daydream Nation”, including the epic “The Diamond Sea” which drifts onward for an unprecedented 20 minutes, still the longest track on any SY album (excluding the SYR releases). Incidentally, “The Diamond Sea” would prove to be one of the band’s most popular songs, and it along with SY’s headlining spot on the summer Lollapalooza tour would introduce legions of new fans to their music. After the regressive, low-key Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star, Sonic Youth appeared to be floundering somewhat, but Washing Machine erased any notion that the band had run out of things to say. Easily their most adventurous, challenging, and best record since Daydream Nation, the album finds Sonic Youth returning to the fearless exploration of their SST records, but the group has found a way to work that into tighter song structures. Not only are the songs more immediate than most of the material on their earlier records, the sound here is warm and open, making Washing Machine their most mature and welcoming record to date. It’s not a commercial record, nor is it a pop record, but Washing Machine encompasses everything that made Sonic Youth innovators, and shows that they can continue to grow, finding new paths inside their signature sound. ~~AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Sonic Youth – The Diamond Sea (1995/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 11:08:07 +0000

The Diamond Sea from Sonic Youth’s 1995 release Washing Machine holds the distinction as the band’s longest song, clocking in at almost 20 minutes on the album. This EP takes the song one step further with a 26 minute “extended” version and also includes a drastically-edited single mix of the song along with the quirky outtake My Arena.
“We all have different aesthetics as to how songs should work. I generally push for a lot of abandon while some people in the group are more interested in truncating things. If I was the leader as much as people say I am, every song would be 20 minutes long.” –Thurston Moore, lead vocalist/guitarist

Sonic Youth – Sonic Nurse (2004/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 11:08:01 +0000

Picking up where Murray Street’s languid experimentalism left off, Sonic Youth’s somewhat awkwardly named Sonic Nurse shows that the band still sounds revitalized, and may have even tapped into a more fruitful creative streak than they did on their previous album. Anyone who has stuck with Sonic Youth this long knows more or less what to expect from them, but the group still has the potential to surprise; one of Sonic Nurse’s biggest surprises is the return of Kim Gordon. She had a relatively limited presence on NYC Ghosts & Flowers and Murray Street, but she’s back in a big way on this album, contributing four tracks; not coincidentally, Gordon’s songs are among the strongest on the album. “Pattern Recognition” gets Sonic Nurse off to a strong start and ranks among her best rock songs, falling somewhere between “Kool Thing” and “Bull in the Heather” in its icy-hot appeal. Her quieter songs have just as much impact: “Dude Ranch Nurse” boasts an oddly timeless guitar lick and lyrics (“Let me ride you till you fall/Let’s pretend that there’s nothing at all”) that blur the line between alluring and nihilistic. “I Love You Golden Blue” is another standout, a beautiful but bleak ballad with ghostly vocals that recall Nico at her most fragile. Of course, the rest of the band finds moments to shine: Thurston Moore’s “Dripping Dream” begins as absurdist, angular rock (although he still has the ability to make phrases like “We’ve been searching for the cream dream wax” sound like the coolest thing ever) and stretches out into a beautiful epic, with the interplay of feedback and guitar lines giving it a comet-tail majesty. “Paper Cup Exit,” the requisite Lee Ranaldo track, has a sharper-edged mix of noise and melody than most of Sonic Nurse. Another of the album’s surprises is how much of its inspiration seems to come from the band’s late-’80s/early-’90s material. It’s not just that the band slams George W. Bush on the mellow protest song “Peace Attack,” just as Dirty’s “Youth Against Fascism” railed against the first President Bush, or that they peer into the void of pop culture on “Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream” as they did on Goo’s Karen Carpenter tribute, “Tunic.” On songs like “New Hampshire” — which could pass for a lost track from Daydream Nation — Sonic Youth actually sound younger and more enthusiastic than they have in a few albums. All told, this album is probably the band’s best balance of pop melodies and avant-leaning structures since Washing Machine; even if it doesn’t rank among their most ambitious work, Sonic Nurse sounds like the kind of album Sonic Youth should be making at this point in their career. –AllMusic Review by Heather Phares

Sonic Youth – Rather Ripped (2006/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 09:37:19 +0000

Rather Ripped contains some of Sonic Youth’s most poppy and accessible songs, co-produced by John Agnello working with the band for the first time. The 2006 release marked the end of Sonic Youth’s nine-album run on Geffen Records as well as the departure of guitarist and producer Jim O’Rourke, who joined the group in 1999.Considering that Sonic Youth lost Jim O’Rourke and found the custom-tweaked, irreplaceable guitars that were stolen in 1999 before heading into the studio to make Rather Ripped, it seemed that the album could be a big departure from what they’d been doing on Murray Street and Sonic Nurse — possibly a return to the kind of music they could only make with those instruments, or perhaps an entirely different approach that reflected their revamped, old-is-new-again lineup. Rather Ripped ends up being of a piece with their previous two albums, and often plays like a stripped-down, slightly less-inspired Sonic Nurse. Once again, Kim Gordon contributes some of the best tracks here; “Reena” and “Jams Run Free” are equal parts dreamy and driving, while “The Neutral” is a sweet, low-key love song. Thurston Moore contributes a gently but powerfully political track à la Sonic Nurse’s “Peace Attack” with “Do You Believe in Rapture?,” a reflection on peace and apocalypse that’s mostly serene, even if the guitar harmonics throughout the song add shivers of doubt and tension. “Rats” is a standard-issue Lee Ranaldo song, freewheeling and poetic (and with lines like “Let me place you in my past/With other precious toys,” it has the sharpest lyrics on Rather Ripped), even if it’s not quite as amazing as the previous album’s “New Hampshire.” Rather Ripped’s rock songs are solid, but not amazing — the interplay of Moore’s and Ranaldo’s guitars and Steve Shelley’s drumming are the best things about “Sleepin’ Around” and “What a Waste.” Actually, the more atmospheric songs end up being some of the most compelling. “Lights Out” reeks of whispery, late-night cool, and the closing track, “Or,” is one of the sparest and most oddly unsettling songs Sonic Youth has done in a while (not to mention a reminder that quiet doesn’t always mean peaceful in this band’s world). Rather Ripped is also surprisingly lean, with the songs on its first half feeling so tightly structured that they seem like radio edits. Only “Turquoise Boy” and “Pink Steam” really open up and deliver Sonic Youth’s famously sprawling, jam-based sound. If Rather Ripped is a tiny bit disappointing, it’s only because the band’s playing outpaces their songwriting ever so slightly. It’s a solidly good album, and if taken as part of a trio of albums with Sonic Nurse and Murray Street, it shows that Sonic Youth is still in a comfortable yet creative groove, not a rut. –AllMusic Review by Heather Phares

Sonic Youth – NYC Ghosts & Flowers (2000/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 09:37:13 +0000

NYC Ghosts & Flowers is the 11th studio album by American noise rock/alternative rock band Sonic Youth. It was released on May 16, 2000 by record label DGC. The album was very experimental and can be considered as a reaction to the theft of their instruments in July 1999, in which many irreplaceable guitars and effects pedals were stolen. This is also the first album since Bad Moon Rising in which Sonic Youth used John Cage-like prepared guitar, for example using a bicycle horn between the strings on Lightnin, a lime between the strings and the first pickup and a file inserted over the neck pickup on Small Flowers Crack Concrete and a drum stick between the strings in Free City Rhymes.Continuing their high-brow path towards avant-garde guitar music and away from their late ’80s punk-influenced style of controlled cacophony, Sonic Youth have continued to make it difficult for fans to follow their evolving style of influential alternative rock. With the aid of renowned producer Jim O’Rourke, this iconic group has stripped away much of the murky sound that polluted its late ’80s masterpieces such as Daydream Nation and Sister. This new style of clean production on NYC Ghosts & Flowers also differs from the group’s early ’90s sound partly attributed to Butch Vig on colorful albums such as Dirty and Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star, where Vig masterfully juxtaposed the group’s knack for noise with his gift for salient production. Similar to Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star, Sonic Youth have again written a collection of shorter songs, focused primarily upon lyrics and song structuring rather than guitars. Thurston Moore’s songs dominate this record, sounding unlike anything he has ever written. These songs seem to evolve spontaneously, moving into and then out of Moore’s Ginsberg-like beatnik vocals. Songs such as “Free City Rhymes” and “Small Flowers Crack Concrete” sound like the music from SYR 1 and SYR 2 accompanied by subtly spoken poetry, focused more on enunciation than melody. More than ever, it seems as if Moore has abandoned his goofball charisma of the past for his new status as an ambitious poet looking to be respected as much for his words as his guitar. Kim Gordon’s contribution, “Nevermind (What Was It Anyway),” stands above all other songs on the album as the only song with a memorable yet kooky vocal melody: “Boys go to Jupiter to more stupider/ Girls go to Mars to become rock stars.” Contributed by Lee Ranaldo, the title track of this album serves as the guitarist’s best lyrical piece to date and also as the album’s grand finale, stretching to nearly ten minutes of slow building guitar intensity. In the end, this Sonic Youth album will appeal to those attracted to the group’s mellow side — a subtle side of the group more interested in collective contemplation than electrifying energy. Never before has the group sounded so consciously mature. For some fans, this album will sound refreshing, but for the many Sonic Youth fans still in love with the confrontational attitude of “Death Valley ’69,” the charged feel of “Teenage Riot,” or the epic scope of “The Diamond Sea” this album may sound tired. ~~ AllMusic Review by Jason Birchmeier

Sonic Youth – Murray Street (2002/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 09:37:07 +0000

Considered one of the band’s best albums, Sonic Youth’s 2002 release Murray Street is named for the location of the group’s studio in New York City, only two blocks from the World Trade Center. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 occurred during the writing and recording of this album, which therefore reflects the turmoil and uncertainty of the times. Murray Street also marks the beginning of Grammy-winning producer and guitarist Jim O’Rourke’s six year stint as a member of Sonic Youth.Virtually every album Sonic Youth has released since the underrated Goo has been hailed as a return to form. However, Murray Street, their second collaboration with Jim O’Rourke (and their first with him as a full member of the group), not only recalls their past glories but explores new territory. Freed from the trendy agendas that marred A Thousand Leaves and NYC Ghosts & Flowers, the group revisits the complex, transcendent guitar epics that made them underground rock heroes in the first place. But Murray Street doesn’t just rehash the sound of their late-’80s heyday, either; for the most part, epics like the ’60s-tinged “The Empty Page” and “Rain on Tin” — which sounds a bit like a rural cousin to Television’s “Marquee Moon” — are built on surprisingly clean, crisp guitar tones that only explode into occasional noise-storms. Indeed, the guitar work on the album’s first three tracks is both economical and sensual, a feast of textures and counterpoints that never sounds overdone. Murray Street’s wonderfully natural yet intricate sound is O’Rourke’s most distinctive contribution to the group; while his work with Smog and Wilco pushed those groups to be more experimental and eclectic, with Sonic Youth he seems to give those tendencies focus and balance. Even the hypnotic drones at the end of “Karen Revisited,” the album’s noisy, oddly romantic centerpiece, have a unique precision and clarity. Murray Street’s first four songs rank among the most consistent, and consistently exciting, work in Sonic Youth’s career, so much so that the album’s shorter, more rock-oriented songs feel a bit anticlimactic. “Plastic Sun,” a Kim Gordon-sung rant, feels particularly out of keeping with the rest of Murray Street’s warm, expansive tone; “Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style” is a typical Sonic Youth rocker that suffers merely from not being as good as the first half of the album. Closing with the serenely sexy “Sympathy for the Strawberry,” Murray Street reaffirms that at the group’s best, Sonic Youth manages to sound fresh and timeless all at once. –AllMusic Review by Heather Phares

Exactly 33 years ago Thursday, on April 14, 1989, Sonic Youth staged a concert in Kyiv, Ukraine, one of the last Western acts to play in the then-Soviet city prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the U.S.S.R. Sonic Youth – Live in Denver 1986 (2020) [FLAC 24bit/48kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 07:39:48 +0000

An all-ager-rager in Denver; I am so glad this one is up cuz my late ’80s live-tape-swapping-obsessive self has always been hopped up about this 1986 gig. It was right off a Europe run and a week later flat-splat into a summer Evol USA tour, SY were kicking around in a hot van gigging everywhere, coast to coast and back with the likes of Saccharine Trust and Dinosaur. It’s well documented in Lee journals and Thurston’s epic/hilarious Forced Exposure tour diary, the latter of which has a great shotgun-seat-sourced pic of T at the wheel as the van left the Lincoln Tunnel behind, off to finally join the trail their newfound SST brothers and sisters were also carving out town to town. Seems like a lot of those tour setlists understandably hit heavy on Evol tracks, even the previous year’s Bad Moon Rising tunes took a backseat (“Death Valley ’69” reportedly only played once this whole tour). But the Denver kids at the Turnverein (German Castle?) got the band midtour in ferocious form though with only five new tunes, six if you count the later-released “White Kross”. The mix on this is perfectly hot-board, guitars skull-split left and right, drums sounding amazing, the whole band almost blurry and slo-mo at times. Very much woozin it up through an especially-psychedelic middle stretch of “Death To Our Friends”/”I Love Her All the Time”/”Flower”/”Green Light” that must have melted stoner kids’ brains. You lose sense of which guitar is which as it all congeals into a big trippy gelatinous pile. Then a “Brother James”/”Kill Yr Idols” one-two punch that sounds like the rawest craziest versions I’ve heard, and finally “Expressway” taking one last peak then cooling it down (then my tape cut off). No knowledge of openers Death Valley Girls, Cage of Reason and Happy Girls, but lots of inspired stuff was in place in Denver’s early ’80s: Tom Headbanger gigs, Bum Kon, The Frantix, pre-SF Jello. Imagine this to have been a cool event for sure. Blasted this tape a lot in the car and it had a Feelies ’86 gig on the other side, so it was especially great to see them together on a bill later in 2008 at Battery Park. Someone I traded with and got this tape from made me a pink tie-dye J-card too which was nice icing on the cake! Hope you like this loud and large set like I do.

Sonic Youth – Live In Bremen 1991 (2020) [FLAC 24bit/48kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 07:39:34 +0000

“Live in Bremen was recorded at the Aladin Music Hall on August 27 1991, just halfway through the 12 day European tour that would later become immortalized in The Year Punk Broke documentary directed by our friend Dave Markey. In Bremen we returned to the familiar – a smaller-sized indoor venue – after playing to gargantuan, surreal-sized audiences at the Reading Festival and Pukkelpop. The Aladin had opened in 1977 and had hosted bands such as Golden Earring, Foghat and Blue Öyster Cult, but on this night Sonic Youth, Gumball and special guests Nirvana were on the bill. Two different bootleg SY records were released from this concert; The Mira Tapes, sourced from an audience recording and Live In Bremen, a semi-official bootleg picture disc with a Yoo-Hoo (a NJ-local chocolate beverage drink) bottle cap – supplied by the band – as the cover star. This concert was also the source for some of the audio used for The Year Punk Broke film score and it’s subsequent short (This Is Known As) The Blues Scale. Now for the first time, and from our own audio source, the entire Sonic Youth in Bremen set (minus encore) is presented here (complete w/a tape-flip during I Love Her All The Time).”

Sonic Youth – Live in Brooklyn, Ny. (2023) [FLAC 24bit/48kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 07:39:29 +0000

The final U.S. show, a triumphant and blistering bookend to the storied career of one of the most influential bands in rock music, featuring a unique and expansive eighty-five minute set list that spans Sonic Youth’s nearly three decade catalog. Mixed from multitrack by longtime live engineer Aaron Mullan and mastered and cut by Carl Saff. On August 12, 2011 Sonic Youth played their final US show on an outdoor stage overlooking the East River at the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn. Fitting that their storied career would bookend with a panoramic view of New York City where it all began 30 years before, having left in their wake one of one of the most powerfully influential careers in rock music. Following incredible sets from Kurt Vile and Wild Flag, the band took the stage. As the sun went down over the city, Sonic Youth ripped through a 17 song set that spanned from deep cuts off their first studio album and highlighting many other albums all the way through to their last, like a band with everything to prove. Or as Brooklyn Vegan’s Andrew Sacher said at the time: “While most bands who are thirty years into their career are either fading away or living off of the nostalgia of their older material, Sonic Youth continue to sound and perform as fresh as ever.”

Sonic Youth – Goo (1990/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 07:39:14 +0000

“Goo” was the sixth studio album by alternative rock group Sonic Youth and their first for a major label. Its lead single, “Kool Thing” made it to the number 7 spot on the singles chart and featured Chuck D of Public Enemy, the record also features the singles “Disappearer” and “Dirty Boots”.Any doubts as to the continuing relevance of Sonic Youth upon their jump to major-label status were quickly laid to rest by Goo, their follow-up to the monumental Daydream Nation. While paling in the shadow of its predecessor, the record is nevertheless a defiant call to arms against mainstream musical values; the Geffen logo adorning the disc is a moot point – Goo is, if anything, a portrait of Sonic Youth at their most self-indulgently noisy and contentious, covering topics ranging from Karen Carpenter (“Tunic”) to UFOs (“Disappearer”) to dating Jesus’ mom (“Mary-Christ”). Even Public Enemy’s Chuck D joins the fracas on the single “Kool Thing,” which teeters on the brink of a cultural breakthrough but falls just shy of the mark; the same could be said of Goo itself – by no means a sellout, it nevertheless lacks the coherence and force of the group’s finest work, and the opportunity to violently rattle the mainstream cage slips by.

Tracklist:

1-1. Sonic Youth – Dirty Boots (05:29)
1-2. Sonic Youth – Tunic (Song for Karen) (06:21)
1-3. Sonic Youth – Mary-Christ (03:11)

Sonic Youth – Dirty (1992/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 05:22:28 +0000

Dirty was the band’s seventh studio album recorded with producer Butch Vig and engineer Andy Wallace, spawning the singles “100%,” “Youth Against Fascism” and “Sugar Kane”. Rolling Stone declares “Dirty is a great Sonic Youth disc, easily ranking with Daydream Nation and Sister among the band’s most unified and unforgettable recorded works”.When DGC Records signed Nirvana in 1991, one of DGC’s A&R reps expressed the opinion that, with plenty of touring and the right promotion, the new act might sell as well as its labelmate and touring partner Sonic Youth. The surprise success of Nevermind upended previous commercial expectations for Sonic Youth (among other established alternative rock bands), and when Dirty was released in 1992, it was seen by many as the band’s big move toward the grunge market. Which doesn’t make a lot of sense if you actually listen to the album; while Butch Vig’s clean but full-bodied production certainly gave Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo’s guitars greater punch and presence than they had in the past, and many of the songs move in the increasingly tuneful direction the band had been traveling with Daydream Nation and Goo, most of Dirty is good bit more jagged and purposefully discordant than its immediate precursors, lacking the same hallucinatory grace as Daydream Nation or the hard rock sheen of Goo. If anything, Dirty finds Sonic Youth revisiting the territory the band mapped out on Sister – merging the propulsive structures of rock (both punk and otherwise) with the gorgeous chaos of their approach to the electric guitar – and it shows how much better they’d gotten at it in the past five years, from the curiously beautiful “Wish Fulfillment” and “Theresa’s Sound World” to the brutal “Drunken Butterfly” and “Purr.” Dirty was also Sonic Youth’s most overtly political album, railing against the abuses of the Reagan/Bush era on “Youth Against Fascism,” “Swimsuit Issue,” and “Chapel Hill,” a surprising move from a band so often in love with cryptic irony. Heard today, Dirty doesn’t sound like a masterpiece (like Daydream Nation) or a gesture toward the mainstream audience (like Goo) – it just sounds like a damn good rock album, and on those terms it ranks with Sonic Youth’s best work.

1. Sonic Youth – 100% (02:29)

Sonic Youth – A Thousand Leaves (1998/2016) [FLAC 24bit/192kHz]

mqs — Tue, 01 Sep 2026 05:22:19 +0000

Truth be told, the grunge era never quite fit Sonic Youth. They may have been at the peak of their popularity, but they had traded their experimentalism for sheer, bracing noise. It may have sounded good, but ultimately Dirty didn’t have the cerebral impact of Sister, largely because it was tied to an admittedly effective backbeat. Beginning with Washing Machine, Sonic Youth returned to more adventurous territory, and in 1997, they released a series of EPs that illustrated their bond with such post-rock groups as Tortoise and Gastr del Sol. Those EPs, as well as the epic Washing Machine closer, “The Diamond Sea,” provide the foundation for A Thousand Leaves, the band’s most challenging and satisfying record in years. The blasts of dissonance that characterized their SST masterworks have been replaced, by and large, by winding, intricate improvisations. There’s a surprising warmth to the subdued guitars of Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and Kim Gordon, which keeps the lengthy songs captivating. Both Moore and Ranaldo concentrate on quiet material, which almost makes Gordon’s noisy politicized rants sound a little out of place, but her best moments (“French Tickler,” “Heather Angel”) have unsettling, unpredictable twists and turns that greatly contribute to the success of A Thousand Leaves. It may be their most cerebral album in ages, but that only makes it all the more engaging.

Tracklist:

01. Sonic Youth – Contre Le Sexism (03:57)
02. Sonic Youth – Sunday (04:53)
03. Sonic Youth – Female Mechanic Now On Duty (07:44)
