This gem of an album by tenor sax man Stanley Turrentine with vibraphonist Milt Jackson recorded for Creed Taylor’s label CTI in 1972. The backing band has some of Jazz music’s heaviest hitters such as Ron Carter on acoustic bass, Billy Cobham on drums, Bob James on mostly Fender Rhodes electric piano and session ace Cornell DuPre on guitar. This album is typical of what the CTI record label was putting out in the early 70s. In this case the players blend hard bop with slight overtones of soul jazz. The medium tempo tunes swing like mad thanks to the amazing hook up of Cobham Carter and James. This came out after Turrentine’s successful album “Sugar” and if you’re familiar with that album “Cherry” is very similar except with the addition of Milt Jackson’s vibes. They share many of the same backing musicians. The music on Cherry is pretty diverse with an interesting take on Lee Morgan’s tune “Speedball” that opens the album. There are two tunes composed by Weldon Irving who you may know as the composer of the tune “Mr Clean” made famous by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard on his CTI album “Straight Life”.

The Sugar Man is an album by Stanley Turrentine. The recording is a compilation of four separate dates, each with different conductors, arrangers and other personnel. The album was recorded in 1971 after his successful debut, Sugar for the CTI label, but not released until 1975 after Turrentine had left for Fantasy Records.”The fifth and final Stanley Turrentine CTI recording actually predates all but the first album (Sugar). This LP has five selections from Feb.-Apr. 1971, including three with larger bands arranged by either Deodato or Chico O’Farrill, and two with a sextet also including guitarist Kenny Burrell and organist Butch Cornell. The best-known selection is the tenor’s first rendition of Michel Legrand’s “Pieces of Dreams” from June 1973; his July 1974 rendition for Fantasy would become quite popular. Although one could consider this album to consist of leftovers, Turrentine’s playing is excellent, and the overall results certainly top most of the tenor’s upcoming Fantasy releases.” (Scott Yanow, AMG)

“In preparing these hi def remasters, we were very conscientious about maintaining the feel of the original releases while adding a previously unattainable transparency and depth. It now sounds like you’ve set up your chaise lounge right in the middle of Rudy Van Gelder’s studio!” – Blue Note President, Don Was.

Recorded at the first Blue Note session of 1962, That’s Where It’s At is Stanley Turrentine’s sixth album for the label. It features a rare collaboration between Turrentine and pianist Les McCann.

Alfred Lion’s inspired idea to pair tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine with The Three Sounds—the trio featuring pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andrew Simpkins, and drummer Bill Dowdy—on 1960’s Blue Hour produced one of most deeply soulful hard bop outings in the Blue Note catalog. Both Turrentine and The Three Sounds were in the early days of their lengthy associations with the label at the time, the saxophonist having just recorded his leader debut Look Out a few months prior and the trio having debuted in 1958 with Introducing The 3 Sounds. Blue Hour is a smoldering late-night affair highlighted by seductive ballad performances of four standards: “I Want A Little Girl,” “Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good To You,” “Since I Fell For You,” and “Willow Weep For Me.” At the album’s center is Harris’ spunky “Blue Riff,” the sole uptempo number on this otherwise laid-back classic.

Salt Song is an album by jazz saxophonist Stanley Turrentine recorded for the CTI Note label featuring performances by Turrentine with an orchestra arranged by Eumir Deodato.Stanley Turrentine’s stint with Creed Taylor’s CTI label may not have produced any out-and-out classics on the level of the very best LPs by Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, or George Benson, but the bluesy tenorist’s output was consistently strong and worthwhile for all but the most stridently anti-fusion listeners. Salt Song was Turrentine’s second album for CTI, and while it’s perhaps just a small cut below his debut Sugar, it’s another fine, eclectic outing that falls squarely into the signature CTI fusion sound: smooth but not slick, accessible but not simplistic. In general, keyboardist Eumir Deodato’s arrangements have plenty of light funk and Brazilian underpinnings, the latter often courtesy of percussionist Airto Moreira. The first three cuts are the most memorable, beginning with a ten-minute exploration of the abrupt time signature shifts of Freddie Hubbard’s “Gibraltar.” Though a hard bop version might have returned to the theme a little less often, Turrentine’s solo sections are full of ideas, befitting one of his favorite pieces of the period; plus, guitarist Eric Gale shines as both a rhythm and lead player. The traditional gospel tune “I Told Jesus” features Turrentine at his bluesiest and earthiest, with snatches of ethereal choir vocals floating up behind him. Milton Nascimento’s title track, naturally, has the strongest Brazilian flavor of the program, and Turrentine skillfully negotiates its frequent shifts in and out of double time. The 1997 CD reissue also includes Nascimento’s “Vera Cruz” as a bonus track. All in all, Salt Song has dated well, partly because the arrangements don’t overemphasize electric piano, but mostly on the strength of Turrentine’s always-soulful playing. –AllMusic Review by Steve Huey
