This is a ground-up remix by Max Read of the original album in The Enid’s surround studio. The music really comes into its own in this format – once you’ve heard it like this, you’ll realise that you’ve been missing out on rather a lot with just two speakers!
RJG: “I have just finishing listening to Max Read’s Surround Sound mixes of The Bridge. They are not just great, they are stunning. The band had always known that The Enid music could really come to life in surround-sound. these results have surpassed all I had hoped for, breaking all ties with an often cluttered stereo field, in surround the music has grown wings. Well done Max.”
Dust is a seven track album using the seven pointed star to symbolise a broken symmetry. Six of these seven points represent diametrically opposed forces, ‘secular and sacred’, ‘wealth and poverty’, ‘environment and consumerism,’ on an annihilation course with each other. When all of these ideas are cancelled out, all that remains is Love.
1. Born in the Fire :: Secular: The opening track discusses the law, where only the rich have access to justice; a subject too close to home for The Enid, a band who have for years fought through legal disputes. Though the choices we make often are built on trust and fair play, as soon as the law gets involved this can become a cold hearted maze of confusion and feelings of vengeance. “I was born in the fire of your love, and that is why I burn now.”
2. Someone Shall Rise :: Sacred: Throughout history, individuals have been inspired by an inner fire to take a moral stand against corrupt power and often suffered terribly for their convictions. Such people often seem to rise out of nowhere in response to a collective longing for change. One man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter.
3. Monsters :: Wealth: We are all conditioned to dream of a perfect future: the house, the car, the wife, the 2.4 children, etc. We grow up believing the acquisition of this stuff is to be happy. Yet the only route to real happiness is to be prepared to let it go. The shroud has no pockets.
4. 1000 Stars :: Poverty: The wealth gap is growing. Written during the 2015 elections, we all watched closely as a parade of politicians unapologetically soiled from their mouths, straight into the beaks of the electorate who predictably chose to feed on anything pre-chewed. All the while we were led into a false sense of security, preaching only to the converted as our Facebook and Twitter accounts cleverly tuned us in only to others who thought like us. Almost every line in 1000 Stars quotes something disagreeable said by the party leaders, charmingly transformed into a sexual innuendo to illustrate how our intellect was being raped with every word.
5. When the World is Full :: Environment: No one likes change. We fight to keep things the same wherever we can, whether it be our landscapes, communities or our lifestyle. Though we raise our pitchforks at the unknown, are we often blind to a greater good? Why is it, at a time when people will risk their lives to escape persecution, we choose to persecute the persecuted? We create a world full of people forced to walk alone.
6. Trophy :: Consumer: Vanity is the Devil’s favourite sin because it leads to all the others: robbery, greed, rape, dishonesty and the love of money. Trophy hunters are serial predators, taking the creativity of others and passing it off as their own. A rich banker seeking to achieve celebrity status by buying a football team. Or a record label. Or the rights to the output of artists. We all know someone like this, don’t we?
7. Heavy Hearts :: Love: When all else is gone there is only love. Love is the glue of the cosmos. It is all that is good in us. Love is what it is to be human, instilled in us all as the overriding human instinct. Without love it makes no sense to think that we are anything other than dust.
