The Lemon Twigs – Go To School (2018) [FLAC 24bit/96kHz]

The Lemon Twigs emerged in 2016 with their debut LP, Do Hollywood, which was praised by Rolling Stone for its toting hooky songs that stand out for their intricate arrangements and delectable melodies and NPR Music who mused, like listening to music from a time that never was, a baroque rock romp. Their second album, Go To School is their most ambitious work yet; a conceptual musical, conceived by brothers Brian and Michael D Addario, which tells a heartbreaking coming of age story of Shane, a pure of heart chimpanzee raised as a human boy as he comes to terms with the obstacles of life. Todd Rundgren and their real-life mother Susan Hall play Shane s parents. The album also features contributions from Jody Stephens (Big Star), Natalie Mering (Weyes Blood) and their father Ronnie D Addario.

Go To School, the second album from the D’Addario brothers, seeks to be ambitious and surpass their album Do Hollywood. On the production side, however, the Lemon Twigs method remains the same, all the songs being composed and recorded in the family cellar on Long Island. Their tools: a 24-track tape recorder and a few compressors. Absolutely no computer! If the Lemon Twigs are aiming to reach new heights, it is with their own sound that they will succeed. The ingenious madness is all still there, it’s just getting bigger. Once more, they display great maturity in their melodies; the harmonies are rich and the whole work is coherent. Michael D’Addario kicks off the album with three compositions that he demonizes with his terribly effective guitar playing. Never in My Arms, Always in My Heart almost sounds like the music to a film created by a team of fairground workers. It’s a multi-level merry-go-round that takes you through the 60s and 70s as well as a series of moods. As the first lap passes, we barely have time to catch our breath before Brian D’Addario takes back control, adding subtle and moving compositions. On The Lesson, the transition is well marked but it highlights all the differences that distinguish one Lemon Twig from the other. This is particularly evident on The Student Becomes The Teacher, where his madness seems almost wiser than on Do Hollywood. Although the synths have given way to brass and wind instruments, guitars remain the preferred medium for regulars and newbies alike. Some fans were even worried about discovering a rock opera/concept-album that was too complex and not up to the expectations set by such a high-flying first album. However, it is quite the opposite. The work done with Jonathan Rado on Do Hollywood has not been in vain and highlights Brian and Michael’s two sensibilities. On this album, pride may be left to one side in favour of music, but talent is very much present. It is difficult to remain insensitive to this artistic proposal.
