Listening to the lyrics of this album, it’s really difficult to believe it came out in 1942. At a time where most songs were about love and the lyrics more or less took a back seat, you have the Pied Pipers with warm optimism, dreams, and even just getting away from the daily grind for a while. At times this album feels like it takes notes and inspirations from bands like The Beach Boys that wouldn’t exist for another 20 years.
Needless to say, the Pied Pipers were very ahead of their time, and lyrically one of the most substantive bands I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to from this era bar a few folk musicians like Woodie Guthrie, Lead Belly, and John Fahey. The sound is pretty standard for the time, but the vocal performances are very nice and warm as well.
