The Partitas were a display of Bach’s mastery at its finest. Firstly, there is a remarkable line of continuity to unite the six suites, helped largely by an overarching tonal structure, which forms a sequence of tonalities that go up and then down by increasing amounts. The work starts in B flat major, going up a second to C, then descending a third to A, and so on and so forth. Bach also thinks beyond the Partitas, allowing the sequence to continue from the first part of the Clavierübung to the second part, the Italian Concerto starting in F and the French Overture in B natural (H in German), neatly using up all eight notes in the German musical letter scale. Yet, despite Bach’s clever tricks, these works were not purely academical, for the Suite, along with the Fugue, was considered one of the highest art forms in the Baroque era. In fact, German musicologist Alfred Dürr argues that while the fugue was considered ‘academic’ and ‘scholarly’, the suite was more gallant, mannered, and emotional. The Six Partitas are certainly not lacking in contrasting emotional characters. From a calm, flowing Allemande in the First Partita, to the gallant French Overture of the Fourth, to the weighty, highly complex Toccata in the Sixth, the Partitas take listeners on a whirlwind journey from light-hearted humour to solemn seriousness. It is no wonder, therefore, that these pieces were an instant success. Bach’s first biographer, JN Forkel, agrees, commenting that these pieces made ‘great noise in the musical world’ and that ‘Such excellent compositions… had never been seen or heard before’.
