Torn Sail are led by Huw Costin – former frontman of Earth The Californian Love Dream as well as being a damn fine solo artist in his own right. Torn Sail’s music is so utterly timeless that it could have been released any time since the mid 1960s. Calling upon the likes of Tim Buckley, The Moody Blues and David Crosby, more recent acts like Verve (before they became The Verve), Sun Kil Moon and Talk Talk, as well as enduring influences such as Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams and Pink Floyd, it wears its heart on its sleeve unashamedly.
This Short Sweet Life is a distillation of six years of Torn Sail in six tracks: There’s the definitive mix of Birds, – initially released on Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy’s cherished label – Claremont 56. There are also great contributions from E.R Thorpe (The Listeners) & Mark Lanegan on Ricochets; B.J. Smith (Smith & Mudd) plays Moog on Gains on Gains, and Rachel Foster (Bent, Groove Armada) sings on the full length version of Treasure.
Simply put – this record should be out in the world. I need your help to make This Short Sweet Life available so that it can be played, shared, e-mailed, or even wiped, piled up, lent against, scratched, caressed, loved and put snugly between other records on a shelf, lent to friends, handed down to children, someday bought for a quid from the charity shop, or sold for a small fortune on discogs. If I have any funding left over then I’ll put it towards the next album or even get the band back out on the road and play some shows. If I don’t make all the money, well, I’m making the records anyway. I’ll just be a little hungrier.
