This groundbreaking recording is a tribute to the composer’s deep connection with the TSO, where Igor Stravinsky made his last public appearance as a conductor in 1967 and conducted a performance of the Pulcinella Suite. Almost six decades later, under the direction of music director Gustavo Gimeno, the TSO is now bringing the entire ballet to life in an impressive new album. The recording contains two of Stravinsky’s neoclassical masterpieces, Pulcinella (Complete Ballet) and the Divertimento from Le Baiser de la Fée (The Fairy’s Kiss), alongside Curiosity, Genius, and the Search for Petula Clark, a contemporary commissioned work by Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy for the TSO.
These two ballets reveal a special facet of Stravinsky’s genius, namely his skill for pastiche. After using music from eighteenth-century Naples for Pulcinella, he turned to Tchaikovsky for Le Baiser de la fée. In both cases, he managed to turn the tribute into a very personal work. Stravinsky had a special artistic affinity with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, which is clearly evident with this new recording!
Gustavo Gimeno commented on the recording as follows: “Pulcinella occupies a special place in the history of the TSO: Stravinsky himself conducted the orchestra in a performance of the ballet suite in 1967, which was his last public appearance as a conductor. It is an extraordinary feeling to return to this work – this time in its full form – while celebrating Stravinsky’s musical ingenuity and the orchestra’s legacy.“
