Trio Areal presents a program of piano trios that are linked both by folk music and by their different aesthetics, offering a varied and fascinating journey through this most intimate of chamber music genres. They range from Frank Martin’s Trio sur des melodies populaires irlandaises to Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, op. 67, and culminate in the world premiere recording of the Piano Trio No. 3 by Tofig Bakikhanov (born 1930), one of the most important Azerbaijani composers of the present day.Founded in 2020 at the Zurich University of the Arts, the trio of talented and promising young musicians Daria, Jamila and Sandro began playing together in the famous Toni-Areal building, where the idea for the trio’s name was born. The trio is particularly attracted to the idea of subtly embedding folk ideas into music and chose three composers whose work embodies this approach. Swiss composer Frank Martin was of Huguenot descent, while Azerbaijani composer Tofig Bakikhanov’s ancestry goes back to the nomadic Persian tribes, the Baku Khans. Shostakovich, on the other hand, was of Siberian and Polish descent and turned to Jewish folk music in numerous compositions to express the plight of the persecuted peoples during the Second World War.
