With “Time Traveler” Ute Lemper manages the unusual feat that the listener does not even notice the 23 years that lie between the individual songs.

Musically, Ute Lemper frees herself from all categories with her new album. One can listen to these songs as pop, rock, jazz, soul or chanson, all at once, or simply as Ute Lemper, depending on one’s socialization and personal preferences. She doesn’t want to serve expectations anymore, but is inspired by songs she likes to listen to herself. This includes references to artists and bands like Hiatus Kaiyote, John Legend, Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, Annie Lennox, Erykah Badu or Robert Glasper, without wanting to copy any of them. All songs are one hundred percent Ute Lemper. In some pieces she goes far into the risk sonically, lures the listener at first on a completely wrong track as in the title track, in others she hides in the production small surprising details with which she puts the songs, herself and not least the sensory perception of the ear again and again to the test.

“Time Traveler” is a very personal album, but its message reaches far beyond Ute Lemper’s own life experience.

With “Time Traveler” Ute Lemper has given herself a gift. And yet it is first and foremost an album for people, which functions like a signpost. In the unsparing self-honesty with which Ute Lemper reflects on her life here in a very accessible way, almost every listener can find themselves again.
