Vestascension is a “Progressive Dream Rock” band based out of Maryland. Simply put, Vestascension is a group of five close friends that have set out to make music we would enjoy listening to. We then offer that music to anyone else that would like to listen to it as well at no cost. That’s really all there is to it! We just hope that you enjoy our songs as much as we have enjoyed creating them.
Vestascension are a band that I have been following for a very long time. Describing themselves as a “dream rock” band, they have been constantly active and inactive over the years. Back in 2011, the band released free downloadable singles every month until they disappeared before reappearing in 2012 with a new singer and song. Since then, they have been deathly quiet up until recently when they announced the long-awaited arrival of their debut album: Breaching the Sound.
One of the characteristics that really sold the band to me was their incredible ability to write beautiful melodies. Whether really simple or grand conjurations, they blend “commercial” melodies with more complex arrangements effortlessly: creating a really rich and lush melodic tapestry throughout their music.
Delivering a blend of Progressive Rock and Atmospherics, the band’s sound is very laid back: casual but engaging. There is no screaming distorted guitars for 99% of the album (even when it does appear, it is given adequate room in both mix and composition) so the centerpiece to the album is very much the vocal performances, the production and the greatly detailed arrangements. All of which are flawless in the execution. It is very refreshing for a band to focus its efforts on creating positive beautiful and somewhat simplistic music as opposed to making some grim, complicated and technical exercise.
Despite being mostly redone versions of the band’s previous singles with the previous singer, it still sounds as fresh as ever with new vocalist Brian Wade. Building upon the powerful foundations created by previous vocalist Mike Semesky and by adding new textures, melodies and harmonies to already established songs, he still manages to make them sound brand new.
The three new songs Burn Your Garden Down, Of One’s Passing and The Heart Machine are without a doubt major highlight of the album for me. Having heard the other songs dozens of times before with their old singer, it’s nice to hear something fresh. That is not to disregard the quality of the previously released songs at all: songs like L’arrivee and Lifoliage are still some of my favorite songs written by the band.
Vestascension have taken their time piecing this album together but it has been worth the wait. Beautiful, melodic, emotional and full of countless memorable moments, this album will grow on you and stay with you as you float through the peaceful waveforms it creates. — Review by Calum, rocknreelreviews.com
