Victor Julien-Laferrière, the very first winner of the 2017 Queen Elisabeth Competition for Cellists in Brussels, joined Alpha Classics in 2019 for several recordings.
After his first recital album, which he has dedicated to works by Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich and Denisov together with pianist Jonas Vitaud, he now presents a cello concerto by Antonín Dvořák (the Second, Op. 104) and Bohuslav Martinů (No. 1, H. 196). He will be accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Liège under the direction of Gergely Madaras.
The two composers, who were born in Bohemia in 1841 and 1890 respectively, shared a strong connection with the music of their homeland and an important experience in the USA – even if the reasons for their travels there were of different nature: Dvořák was director of the National Conservatory of New York from 1892 to 1895, during which time he composed the symphony No. 9 and the present cello concerto. Martinů, who emigrated to the United States during World War II and remained there until 1953, wrote dozens of successful works there.
With this recording, Victor Julien-Laferrière combines two key cello works by important representatives of the Czech school.
