Whitey Morgan And The 78’s – Hard Times and White Lines (2018) [FLAC 24bit/44,1kHz]

Halfway between the road and a honkytonk barstool, Whitey Morgan is one of Country music’s icons. The Michigan native and his band The 78’s surprise with every new release, just like on Hard Times and White Lines, where he is keeping the outlaw tradition alive alongside Brett Robinson (steel pedal), Joey Spina (guitar), Alex Lyon (bass) and Eric Savage (drums). With a voice not far off Waylon Jennings’ and a bawdy sense of humour like that of Hank Williams Jr., Morgan has been fairly serene since Sonic Ranch, released in 2015. This is because for the most part this hard working cowboy self-produces and works behind the scenes. Hard Times and White Lines is a record bathed in bar-room booze and sweat, and perfectly frames the country honkytonk vibe. Working with songwriters Travis Meadows and Ward Davis, Morgan recorded the album in Texas, in the Neve Room studio. The hit Honky Tonk Hell opens the album with a gravelly, raw and authentic sound, with Whitey Morgan held prisoner in a hot bar that tortures his soul with painful memories, where dangerous women lurk and the alcohol flows. There follows some rather funky blues based on the ZZ Top cover Just Got Paid with a whiff of modernity. Built like David Allan Coe and with his tipsy brand of country rock, Morgan recycles the classics, but makes them sound brand new! – Clara Bismuth
