Wilkinson grew up in Springfield, Missouri and became a fan of Elvis Presley at an early age. However, he didn’t like the way Presley played the guitar. When Elvis performed in his hometown in 1955, he knocked on his idol’s booth and told him so freely.

At 13, Wilkinson formed his own band, which he called The Coachmen. Around 1964, Wilkinson moved to California, where he attended university and built a reputation in the recording studios. Because he still needed a rhythm guitarist, Elvis Presley contacted him in 1968. From then on, Wilkinson was part of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s ensemble until his death in 1977. At the same time he also played for the Kingston Trio. After Presley’s death, Wilkinson formed a band called Justice.

In 1989, he suffered a stroke that paralysed his left arm, so that he could no longer play guitar. However, he still performed occasionally with some members of the old TCB Band at Elvis memorial events and tours, usually singing the song Early Morning Rain. John Richard Wilkinson died on 11 January 2013 as a result of cancer.
