The “Way of the Cross / Chemin de la Croix” by Marcel Dupré is one of the most important compositions of the 20th century for the organ. Although stylistically belonging to the French organ symphonic school, it grows out of it and creates a type of music that has no fixed features as a musical genre: the organ meditation. Here, the “Symphonie-Passion” op. 23 and the “Chemin de la Croix” establish a new type of sacred organ music for France, i.e., music related to biblical events or liturgical words, which was continued by Olivier Messiaen.”Marcel Dupre has described his “Stations of the Cross” for organ from 1932 as a “symphonic poem”. Indeed, the fourteen Stations of the Cross from the condemnation of Jesus to his burial are subtle meditations that go beyond the purely striking description of the sometimes very dramatic scenes. Dupre transcends the events and attempts a theological interpretation of the Passion. Winfried Lichtscheidel, in turn, interprets Dupre’s fascinating music in an atmospheric density that one can hardly imagine more intense Lichtscheidel has already recorded several productions of mainly French symphonic organ music on “his” organ in St. Martinus in Sendenhorst, and “Der Kreuzweg” is his latest masterpiece. Everything comes together here in the most fortunate way: an artist who knows how to mobilize inexhaustible resources; an organ from the workshop of Gerald Woehl that is predestined for this music; and finally a recording technique that convincingly captures the instrument and its cathedral-like effect in the church space And that’s not all: Dupre’s hymnal-celebratory “Te Deum” also gets a festive dress. And Winfried Lichtscheidel’s recording is crowned by the “Trois Esquisses” op. 41, which one hardly ever hears in everyday concerts because they are simply hellishly difficult to play.
