In the 16th century Venice became one of the most important centers of musical life in Europe. The activities of numerous talented musicians of St Mark’s Basilica, a dynamic growth of instrumental music, the adoption and creative development of polychoral techniques and the growth of thriving music printing houses all contributed to this propitious state of affairs.To transalpine composers from the turn of the 17th century, composing in the Venetian style and having their works printed by local printing houses represented a mark of belonging to Europe’s musical elite. The only Polish composer to fulfill these criteria was Mikołaj Zieleński. His two-part work entitled Offertoria totius anni and Communiones totius anni, half of which consists of polychoral pieces, was published in 1611 by the Venetian printer Giacomo Vincenti.At the time Zieleński worked as Kapellmeister and organist at the Łowicz court of the Polish primate, archbishop of Gniezno Wojciech Baranowski, to whom he dedicated his publication. Surviving information concerning the composer’s life is scant, his dates of birth and death remain unknown. We only know that he came from Warka, was married to Anna Feterówna and in 1604 received from the bishop of Płock – at the time a post held by Baranowski – a plot of land in Gromin near Pułtusk. Such an endowment was doubtless effected by Zieleński’s services performed for the bishop, a great music lover and connoisseur of music. It is safe to assume that the former had been in the service of the latter for a considerable amount of time. In later years Primate Baranowski, in appreciation of his Kapellmeister’s talents, endowed him with further benefits and most probably also financed the Venetian edition of his work. The date of its publication coincides in time with the last surviving references to Zieleński, according to which he participated in court proceedings in Łowicz at the end of February and beginning of March and in mid-April 1611. Nothing further is known about the course of his life.
