The album “In einer Zauberstunde” by Australian-born flutist Xavier Luck and his compatriot Daniel Linton-France focuses on works for flute and piano inspired by song or opera. The focus is on the introduction and variations on “Trockne Blumen” from Schubert’s “Die schöne Müllerin.” Contrast this with the Introduction and Variations on a Theme from Carl Maria von Weber’s “Euryanthe” for flute and piano, op. 63 by Friedrich Kuhlau, composed in the same year.Contemporary arrangements of this theme include the Fantasy on a Theme by Franz Schubert (“Du bist die Ruh'”) and the eponymous “In einer Zauberstunde” by Daniel Linton-France, presented as world premiere recordings. The latter was inspired by Xavier Luck and is a virtuosic work that takes various themes and motifs from W. A. Mozart’s “Magic Flute,” from which the title is derived. As a concluding piece we find another song by Schubert, “Des Baches Wiegenlied,” again from his song cycle “Die schöne Müllerin,” in an arrangement for flute and piano by Anton Diabelli.
