Chick Corea was undoubtedly an artist who shaped the music of the 20th century.
The pianist and composer was not only at home in jazz and Latin, rock and classical music also flowed into a sound that would later be called fusion. On February 9, 2021, the US American with Italian roots died at the age of 79. Now the man who won an impressive 25 Grammy Awards is rightly celebrated.”Chick Corea had that very special something that set him apart. You might not be a jazz fan, and still love his music,” says Antonio Lizana. The Spaniard’s intense, flamenco-tinged voice can be heard on “Crystal Silence.” The song is one of twelve live recordings made by Adda Simfònica, the symphony orchestra of the Adda Auditorium, in July 2021 in Alicante, Spain, during the FiJazz Festival.

“It’s one of the most glorious musical sounds ever,” Chick Corea himself said about the sound of large orchestras. It was only logical, then, that Ritmo -Tribute To Chick Corea featured a jazz trio as well as a full, 80-piece symphony orchestra in the concert hall – giving Corea’s iconic songs a whole new sonority and elegance. Unforgettable pieces, given new, dazzling timbres not least by extraordinary soloists.

The focus of the song selection was on a period that was probably Corea’s most productive, the years 1971 to 1976, during which time the pianist composed songs like “Spain” that became jazz standards within a very short time. Adda Simfònica interpreted no less than four songs from his “My Spanish Heart” album, and several of the touching “Children’s Songs” are also represented.

The project was conceived and produced by conductor Josep Vicent, Artistic Director of the Orchestra, with arrangements by Emilio Solla, winner of the Argentine Latin Grammy Award.

Ritmo is a celebration of the work of Chick Corea – showing the enormous influence his work has had on contemporary jazz and its fusion with Latin. “Man himself activates rhythm, and when that turns into a verb, it comes alive,” says Josep Vicent. The creators were always concerned with fire, tempo and liveliness, in addition to the unforgettable melodies.

Ritmo thrills with electrifying wind solos by David Pastor, Antonio Lizana and Paquito D’Rivera. The Cuban saxophonist, a five-time Grammy winner, said of the project, “We all love Chick’s music. The fantastic arrangements by Emilio, the quality and dedication of a very young, talented orchestra, and the typical enthusiasm of Spaniards in a magnificent concert hall – all worked to our advantage.”
