Andre Minvielle – Follow Jon Hendricks… If You Can!!! (2010) [Qobuz FLAC 24bit/88,2kHz]

André Minvielle invites us to follow a path of music going through a few languages of jazz, which Jon Hendricks being at the source of some of them. Jon Hendricks is one of the pioneers of this art called “vocalese” in the US which consists on putting words into solos, historical themes of great solo jazz composers. Jon Hendricks has been side by side with the greatest musicians such as Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker among others, he is the ultimate reference for all great singers from nowadays such as Al Jarreau or Bobby Mac Ferrin.

André Minvielle, the voc’ alchemist express through this CD his “point of voice” with transatlantic translations of influences that the 20th century music have had on French music, gypsy swing, Italian Tarantella and traditional Occitan music. It begins with an homage to Dionysos through the Jon Hendricks theme “gimme that wine” and ends with some pygmy Songs in the middle of Pyrenees singing. Meeting place where André invited two other great vocalists: Michèle Hendricks, Jon’s daughter, heiress of a tradition and David Linx. But also two accordionists from two different backgrounds to assist them. Lionel Suarez and Marcel Loeffler respectively for traditional and gypsy guitar. The bass/drums “East/West” rhythmic is made by Jérôme Regard from Lyon and Pierre François Duffour from Boredeaux. For the occasion Jon Hendricks wrote a text in English with the theme “follow the accent” which has been translated in French, Occitan, Italian, and Spanish and recorded as sounding testimonies made of polyrhythmic comas. Coming from this album is a great musical diversity, established in the origins of local dance, musical experimentations entertained by cross border Jazz from nowadays.
