David “Dave” Pell (* February 26, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York City; † May 8, 2017) was an American jazz musician, saxophonist, bandleader, arranger, composer and producer.
Dave Pell played with Bob Astor, Tony Pastor and Bobby Sherwood from the early 1940s. Then he moved to California and worked there with Bob Crosby and his own octet, with whom he released numerous records in the 1950s. Pell was also a member of the orchestra of Les Brown from 1948 to 1955 and was employed as a recording director of the record company Tops. In the 1960s, he temporarily retired from the jazz scene and worked as a producer for the record labels Liberty Records and United Artists. In memory of Lester Young’s music, he then initiated the Prez Conference project, with Harry Sweets Edison and Joe Williams, among others. Not only his own records were re-released on his label Group 7 Music, but also those of other musicians.
