On September 16, 2022, the winners of the Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis 2022, Dorothea Schupelius (violin) and Jelizaveta Vasiljeva (piano), will release their debut album under the title #Wunderkammer. The basis of the debut album is the innovative winning concept with which the two young musicians convinced the expert jury headed by Prof. Dr. Dieter Rexroth at the beginning of the year. With “#Wunderkammer”, the duo for violin and piano embarks on a journey into music history and explores the influence of the media on music – from the first music broadcast over the radio to the digital present with the Internet, live streaming and social media. The recordings of the works by Kreisler, Ravel, Toch, Steiner, Korngold, Weill, Morricone and Heck were completed in the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Hamburg.#Wunderkammer – the title of the debut album of the duo Dorothea Schupelius (violin) and Jelizaveta Vasiljeva (piano) already reveals that past and present are placed in an exciting contrast here. On a tour of discovery through the history of music, the two young musicians have selected pieces for their winning concept that impressively show the influence of the media on music and thus created their own musical chamber of curiosities – a term that rulers and scientists used in the Renaissance and Baroque for their collections of all kinds of art and curiosities. For example, the Andantino for violin and piano by Fritz Kreisler is reminiscent of the year 1923, in which Funk-Stunde AG transmitted music for the first time. The works of Maurice Ravel, Ernst Troch and Kurt Weill also explore the importance of radio for music. The relationship between music and film is the focus of the pieces by Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Ennio Morricone. With Jonathan Heck’s “World Wide Web – Fantasy for Violin and Piano”, a specially composed piece initiates the return to the Internet-influenced present. The young composer, actor and violinist interweaves tones and sounds into a spherical chamber of wonders and thus explores the meeting space of digital and music. The album will be released on 16. September will be released on the Hamburg label in E flat major and will be available on CD as well as in streaming.
