Rud’s career as a jazz musician began in the 1960s in Oslo. He played in Ditlef Eckhoff’s Quintet in 1965 and worked with Svein Finnerud from 1967 to 1974, with whom he recorded three LPs. In 1968 he began studying at the Conservatory, participated in a recording by Karin Krog and founded his own Band. In 1969 he was a member of Arild Bomans Ensemble.In the 1970s he worked with Mal Waldron (1971), Magni Wentzel and Bjørn Johansen (1973), Dexter Gordon (Tokyo 1975), The Christian rhyming Sextet and the Jon Balke quartet (1973-74), the Guttorm-Guttormsen quartet (1974-78) and the Radka Toneff quintet (1975-76), among others.. In 1978, he participated in a tour of India with Karin Krog. Between 1978 and 1983 he led the group Kråbøl. In 1983 he received the Buddy Prize.

From 1980 to 1989 Rud was a member of the Trondheim New Cool Quartet. He also worked with Erling Aksdal (1980), Christian Reim (1980-81 and 1983-84), Warne Marsh, Pepper Adams and Kenny Wheeler (1981), the Per Husby quintet (1982-83), Chet Baker (1983) and Lee Konitz (1983 and 1985).

In 1991 and 1992 he performed with pianist Michael Bloch, after which he formed the trio REW with Christian Wallumrød and Johannes Eick. For the album Rudlende he received the Spellemannprisen in 1998. With Torbjørn Sunde he led the Group Fire Fyrer (Prøysen goes jazz, 2012).
