Exuma’s legend is larger than life, and his album covers are disturbingly beautiful – perfectly evoking the mysteries of island life and island ritual. However if you know nothing about him and happen to stumble upon this rare album, you will be hard pressed to find any sense of exotic romance or ethnic identity in what you actually hear – a Cat Stevens-ish sort of voice with shaky intonation presiding over communal chants and be-ins. In other words, this is pretty indistinguishable from the rest of the low-budget drugged out hippie Hare Krishna rock-jazz chant music being made at the time. If you’re into Alan Watts or just want dated innocuous background music to go with your lava lamp collection, this certainly won’t disappoint, and some may consider the vinyl worth owning for the album art alone.
