Joe Patti’s Experimental Group is Franco Battiato’s twenty-ninth studio album, in collaboration with Pinaxa, released in Italy in 2014 by Universal Records. Battiato aims to return to purely electronic and experimental sounds, in collaboration with Pino Pischetola, aka Pinaxa, who has been working with him since 2012, the year the album Apriti sesamo was released. The album breaks away from the production of the previous thirty years to move closer to electronica, a genre that characterized it in the seventies. The distance taken is explained by Battiato a month before its release:

«For me the only thing that matters in life is the existential part, the one that tests you: I’m not interested in confirmation, in being reassuring for the public, in giving them what they want. If you do this you betray your role which is to do what interests you, not what interests them.”

Various songs on the album refer to previous productions: the beginning of Come un packa di lupi is taken from L’ignoto, while the lyrics are those of Inneres auge; Leoncavallo is composed of parts of live concerts held by Battiato, including the unreleased Novena and the concert held at the Leoncavallo Social Center in Milan, and the text is partly taken from the song “New Frontiers”, sixth track of the album “Noah’s Ark”; the song “Omaggio a Giordano Bruno” contains samples from the song “Prigione pozzo”, previously included in the album “Cellini – Una vita scellerata”; the music and lyrics of Elephant Island are partly taken from Shackleton; a good part of The implicate order is taken from Öde, Ferro batted’s ghost track; The voices will become presences is taken from Ghost track, which is in fact a ghost track, contained in the album Fleurs.

However, Battiato himself stated that he mainly took over things recorded between 1970 and 1972, completing them. The album was preceded by the track Property prohibited, a remix of the track Propriedad prohibida from the 1974 album Clic. An official presentation video was also made, directed by Leandro Manuel Emede.
