Etienne François went to school in Nancy and graduated in 1960 with the Baccalauréat philosophie. He studied history and geography at the École normale supérieure (ENS) in Paris and in Nancy from 1964 to 1970. He graduated from the Sorbonne in 1966 with a Licence d’Histoire et de Géographie in geography and a year later from there with a Diplôme d’Etudes Supérieures d’Histoire in history. In 1968, François received his Agrégation d’Histoire.In 1974, François received his Doctorat de Troisième Cycle d’Histoire from the University of Paris X with the topic Population et société à Coblence au XVIIIe siècle. In 1986 followed the habilitation to the Doctorat d’Etat d’Histoire at the University of Strasbourg (University of Strasbourg II – Marc Bloch) with the topic La frontière invisible. Protestants et catholiques à Augsbourg, 1648-1806.

His professional career began in 1970 as a university assistant in the Department of History at the University of Nancy II. In 1977 he was appointed university senior assistant before taking up the post of head of the French Historical Research Center (Mission Historique Française en Allemagne) in Göttingen on behalf of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1979, a post he held until 1986. In 1984/85, he taught in the Department of History at the University of Göttingen, where he habilitated in 1985.
