Add this gracious, understated album from Heather Woods Broderick to the ongoing conversation about breaking the grip of super-accelerated technological life.

Broderick did it. After seven years on the road as a hired gun musician and singer, backing Sharon Van Etten and others, Broderick quit Brooklyn for the Oregon coast. She went away to get quiet, in nature, Thoreau-style. “A Stilling Wind,” the opening track of her third album, was one of the first things she wrote. The image-rich early verses offer clues about her sojourn, and then, in the middle section, Broderick cuts to the kinds of questions that only spring out of extended solitude: “Have I changed yet?” “Or do my habits still remain?”

She half-whispers these lines, her voice another lingering texture in pools of stirring, meditative sound. A multi-instrumentalist who has recorded with Efterklang and Horse Feathers, among others, Broderick relies on unusual instrumental colors throughout Invitation–several songs feature expansive, vividly melodic writing for string quartet, while others, like the ambling “I Try,” are built around a rattling upright piano. The lyrics aren’t always introspection-forward, but an aura of calm reflection prevails throughout, an invitation into the wonders of the inner landscape. – Tom Moon
