The instrument “flute” is closely associated with Frederick the Great and his residence at Sanssouci, as the Prussian king was a passionate flautist and the flute played a central role in his life. From an early age, Frederick received lessons on the transverse flute, first from Peter Gabriel Buffardin and later from Johann Joachim Quantz, who not only became his teacher but also a close confidant and court composer. Quantz composed hundreds of works for Frederick and even developed a special transverse flute to meet the king’s high musical demands. For the recorder player Isaac Makhdoomi, it is now a special challenge to transfer these works, which were actually composed for a transverse flute, to HIS instrument, the recorder in various tunings.
