Born in Japan, 1971. Iwao Ochi grew up in Toyohashi, Aichi. He started to play rock guitar at age 13.
Gradually, he concentrated on black music and moved to Chicago in 1992. For the same year, he saw a Jimmy Smith perform with Kenny Burrell at Chicago Jazz Showcase. It was the first jazz show he looked at, and It was shocking to him.
