This unique collection of songs by Sir Arnold Bax contains 18 songs in four languages, all of which can be heard in premiere recordings and five of which have never been performed before. Written mostly in the twenties and thirties, the settings reflect the diverse interests of this enigmatic musical individualist. Bax’s devotion to spiritual culture, literary tradition, and the landscapes of the Celtic world is unmistakable, interspersed with excursions into Norse/German mythology as well as French gastronomic farce and folk songAlmost all of the songs were transcribed from Bax’s manuscripts by Graham Parlett, whose insightful and detailed annotations add much to our understanding of the composer’s restless musical explorations. Dr. Parlett’s good-natured willingness to answer countless e-mailed questions during the preparation of this recording was invaluable. His unexpected death prior to the release of this recording was a shock to all who knew and admired him, and this recording is dedicated to his memory.
