Kita Alexander returns with her long-awaited debut album, Young In Love, a truthful, passionate and radiant melodic celebration of self, life, love and traversing the waves of a relationship.. The album follows twelve singles and three EPs that have all seen Kita faithfully document the peaks and troughs of her 27 years on earth —from falling in love to facing unfathomable hardships to experiencing motherhood. Here, her writing doubles down to create her most honest, relatable and self-assured release yet.
Produced in her hometown of Byron Bay, with the help of Kon Kersting (DMA’S, Tones and I, The Rubens), Thom and Andy Mac (Vera Blue), Young In Love, was written in under a month and is a sparkling nod to the music that played a starring role in Kita’s life and household. Treating the songs as her personal journal, Kita boldly explores her shadow self, her childhood and the challenges of balancing life’s responsibilities on her terms, and does so with enviable maturity and wisdom.
Young in Love is a celebration of doing the work; of finding one’s self while also tending to a partnership to ensure both mature into something beautiful, fruitful and free. “It’s taken me a while to figure out what this album is, because I just write without really thinking,” she says. “But once I pieced it together, I realised, oh, wow, this is a beautiful journey of being young and in love —it’s not about bouncing from one person to the other, but sticking with it, experiencing real self growth, real life and real love, and going through the good, the bad, the ugly.”It’s taken more than a decade and four EPs since Australian singer-songwriter Kita Alexander’s debut for her to finally release her first full-length album, but her indie dance pop feels like the right mood right now. If you simply hear these songs in a café or boutique—and you probably will—the breeziness is charming. But there’s a surprising edge here, too. Sunny “Queen” is dance-floor ready, with its smooth retro synth and percolating beats, as Alexander sings about dancing alone in the kitchen and feeling good about it. But never mind that “dance like no one’s watching” BS; Alexander is “dancing with myself like everyone’s watching, watching me.” “I’m a fucking queen,” she declares. “Zodiac” brings the summertime roller-disco vibes, complete with slip-slide bass, as the singer makes clear she can take care of herself: “I’m lonely but I don’t want to dance with you/ So I’m touching myself up in this empty room.” It’s easy to imagine a remix with whistle blares, and there’s even a great built-in spot for the anticipatory drop. “All Night” evokes disco-ball shimmer, breathy and feel-good in the vein of Aussie’s reigning monarch, Kylie Minogue. It features a shamelessly ’80s sax solo and bedroom-pop star Laurel bouncing lines back and forth with Alexander like a game of catch. “7 Minutes in Heaven,” meanwhile, comes on like folksy Dua Lipa, with the singer celebrating a no-strings, neon-light makeout session: “Just let it go, it’s only seven minutes in heaven/ And we’re high on hallucinogenics/ And I don’t know which direction we’re headed/ Just let it go, we’re only in love for a second.” Fellow Aussie and Nashville transplant singer-songwriter Morgan Evans (Kelsea Ballerini’s ex) shows up for “Date Night,” a modern country duet dressed with dreamy steel guitar, and his scratchy twang offers a leather-and-lace counterpoint. “Bigger Person” slows down the tempo to chill-out mood; “Butterflies” is a dreamy dance-queen ballad. And Alexander reveals a nice huskiness to her voice on “Matter of Miles,” with its folky campfire vibe. – Shelly Ridenour
