Nuria Rial is the soloist in this new recording by the Swiss ensemble La Floridiana. Conductor and harpsichordist Nicoleta Paraschivescu has once again discovered hidden treasures of Italian Baroque music, this time by Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739), brother of composer Alessando Marcello. Born in Venice into a noble family, Benedetto Marcello developed into a highly acclaimed composer of his time, creating a wide range of works and being credited with over 300 cantatas that can be found in the most important music libraries in Europe and America. This new album features the world premiere recordings of three beautiful and moving cantatas for soprano and ensemble, as well as interesting and magnificent short symphonies. The four cantatas selected for this album were found in a magnificent manuscript, decorated with drawings, originally written in Venice and comprising 24 cantatas for soprano and basso continuo that are proven to be by Marcello. Three of these four cantatas are world premiere recordings and represent real highlights. They deal with the classic theme of lovers separating with the hope of their future reunion. “Non son morta nel partire” (SF A213) in serene E-flat major is mostly cheerful and eschews extended coloratura, while “Ti sento, Amor, ti sento” (SF 350a) is a heartbreaking lament. The beautiful “Qual turbine improvviso” (SF A266) survives in a manuscript in the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice and, with its long colotaura section and boisterous string figures, evokes the gathering clouds and unleashing winds that whip the churning sea as a metaphor for the perilous journey across the “sea of love.” The symphonies, with their subtleties of counterpoint and urgent dotted rhythms, are jewels of Baroque music.
