Shaky violin vibratos and languid harp arpeggios ominously introduce these lovers’ kiss before Maria sings over bolero percussion about the fact that it’s too late, she’s too much of a woman for you, as French horns and trombone swell around her dazzling melody.

Her upcoming album, also titled “Mucha Mujer,” showcases both her harrowing approach to intimate boleros and her infectious power in boisterous cumbias and sones.

The 16-piece orchestra was recorded live on an analog tape, giving the music a huge, soulful sound that hadn’t been heard in decades, with Maria’s soulful voice guiding the listener seamlessly throughout the entire journey. The album will be out on September 22.
