Born in Vienna in 1903, Victor Urbancic held various positions in German and Austrian musical life before being forced into exile by the Nazi regime in 1938 (as his wife Melitta Grünbaum was Jewish). After unsuccessful attempts to obtain a position in Switzerland or the United States, Urbancic decided to flee to Iceland, where within a very short time he was working at the Reykjavík Music School and over the years became a key figure in the music scene there.Austrian soprano Marina Colda, together with Julia Tinhof, piano, presents songs by Victor Urbancic on this album under the title “Vorahnung”. The title is borrowed from the song of the same name from 1920 to the somber lyrics of Edward Mörike, which against the background of Urbancic’s life story seems like an actual premonition of his fate. The majority of these songs were written in the period before his exile and are indebted to a rather late romantic style of composition.
