Throughout history, women have had worse conditions than men, also in the world of music. Women who wanted to cultivate their interest in music often challenged the traditional gender role pattern, and several of the composers featured on this album faced greater or lesser obstacles during their lives. At the age of 18, the talented Signe Lund applied for a scholarship to study abroad, but was told that she should rather get married. Professor Louise Farrenc at the Paris Conservatory of music had for many years considerably lower wages than her male colleagues, before she argued in a polite letter to the management for a rightful salary increase.
