A black jazz musician in the later part of the 1960s was a stranger in their own home. Theodor Adorno says it is essential to morality, “not to be at home in one’s home,” and although Adorno ironically despised the great American music, what Edward Said observes about Adorno’s quote is also essential to understanding this important period in jazz history. The necessity in exile, for Said, is to attack the “dogma and orthodoxy” that homes and their metaphorical effects pack within our nature, which is exactly what the New Music produced in this time effectively did, in part because of musicians’ forced detachment from a dying New York jazz scene. Although jazz was the target of Adorno’s sometimes racist, and perhaps classist, thought, it later was the focal point for a cultural affirmation of his moral response to fascism.
