While Eugen gained fame as a piano virtuoso in the 1960s and performed with singers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Shirley Bassey, Roger made the German-speaking swing socially acceptable and delighted his fans with a mixture of pop, jazz and swing, seasoned with cheeky and amusing lyrics.

Her life stories are inextricably intertwined and have numerous parallels – from rapid ascent to painful crashes, from the struggle between commercial success and artistic integrity to her tragic death from a cerebral infarction.

On the 6th anniversary of the death (24 March) of Roger Cicero (1970-2016), the moving cinema documentary “Cicero – Two Lives, one Stage” about Roger and Eugen Cicero (1940-1997) will be released in German cinemas. The film is directed by Kai Wessel (“Nebel im August”, “Hilde”), the author is the Hamburg producer Katharina Rinderle.

More than 50 interviews, some of them very personal, were conducted with companions and contemporary witnesses, including multi-talented Till Brönner and drummer Charly Antolini. The result is an emotional tribute to two extraordinary musicians who overcame both boundaries and broke new musical paths.

Based on the interviews, numerous concert recordings and private film material, the documentary film sheds light on the career of the two musicians and tries to fathom their passion for music: Eugen Cicero was a classically trained jazz pianist and pioneer of the crossover, long before this term made its way into music theory. His son Roger played unnoticed in small Hamburg clubs until he celebrated an overwhelming success with German-language swing.
