“Half-Light” is the debut album from Rostam Batmanglij, who is known for his work with Vampire Weekend and produced each of their three albums. The kaleidoscopic album features fifteen songs written, produced, and performed by Rostam in his Los Angeles home studio. All in all, Half-Light makes it apparent just how much of what was captivating about Vampire Weekend came from Batmanglij, solidifying the newly independent musician as a collaborator artists from multiple genres should-and do-want to work with.

In need of Vampire Weekend, that have been quiet since Modern Vampires Of The Cityreleased in 2013? Rostam Batmanglij is there to assuage the hunger of the fans of the New-Yorkers—of which he drove the keyboards and, most of all, produced three albums! Because if Ezra Koenig was the band’s showcase, Batmanglij was its most active and crazy musical brain. But since his tweet from January 26, 2016, the entire world knows that the Washington born man of Iranian origin has left the ship. Parallel to Vampire Weekend, Rostam Batmanglij had never stopped to work here and there, notably to compose film scores with his brother Zal. He has also formed the duo Discovery with Ra Ra Riot’s Wesley Miles. And with Hamilton Leithauser from Walkmen, he recorded the beautiful album I Had a Dream That You Were Mine. He even sat many times behind the console to produce people from diverse backgrounds like Cass McCombs, Frank Ocean, Haim, Declan McKenna, the wacko rappers Das Racist, Carly Rae Jepsen and Solange Knowles! But with Half-Light, Batmanglij, who dropped anchor in Los Angeles in 2014, pens his most personal album, a sort of outcome of all his previous works. We’ll logically think of Vampire Weekend but also of the nebulous Animal Collective/Panda Bear and of interbreeding à la Paul Simon. His psychedelic electro pop is run through by diverse sounds coming from India and the East. Between two drum machines and a guitar riff, you’ll notice some sitar, cello, table, and even some violin… On this multicolored sonic flying carpet that he drives with his fairy fingers, Rostam makes your hearing and senses capsize. And it’s rather enjoyable.
