Santigold’s new album comes at the right time. While the 2018 pop has incorporated the dancehall tunes and the Caribbean sounds, the American singer can finally reap the rewards of her works from the last ten years, with this energetic and contagious I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions released on Downtown Records. The one that was compared to M.I.A and launched by Diplo and Switch from Major Lazer (the latter has produced her first hit Creator) exhibits once again her peculiarity.

Accompanied by her producer Dre Skull, the boss of the label Mixpack, the singer advocates for creation without boundaries, a sound-system party in which are blended Afro beats, dubby transitions and ska inspirations. Everything starts with a tropical opening, Coo Coo Coo, in which the advances toward the diva succeed one another without ever convincing her. She gives an answer without further delay in Wha’ You Feel Like, a surprising and futuristic reggae/hip-hop fusion, that is also feminist in its own way. Santigold unfolds the typically Jamaican ragga-dancehall beats (Wha’ You Feel Like) that she’s been fond of since the beginning and on I Don’t Want, she promises to never forgets from where she’s from, what she is and what she will never become. Anyway, we like her that way. – Anna Coluthe
