There is something very special about the symbiosis of a great composer and a talented performing musician: many of the great moments in musical history were born of such collaborations. This rare joy is now to be felt in our time: JOE’S TANGO features the world premiere recording Concerto for Trombone by none other than jazz legend Chick Corea, tailor-made for virtuoso solo trombonist Joseph Alessi.

It’s a riveting, marvelous work — classical in scope, but contemporary in rhythm and feeling. Conductor Thomas G. Leslie, his University of Nevada Las Vegas Wind Orchestra, and the Boston Brass Quintet empathetically frame this centerpiece with works by Hugo Montenegro and the young Jorge Machain, who offers the world premiere recording of his Five Cities to the mix. The resulting album — as one might expect — is altogether outstanding. The Trombone Concerto was the last completed work of jazz pianist Chick Corea before his death in 2021. The work, for trombone and orchestra, was premiered by New York Philharmonic principal trombonist Joseph Alessi with the São Paulo Philharmonic Orchestra; it is here arranged for solo trombone and wind band by composer Jorge Machain, represented elsewhere on this album by his own Five Cities, a concerto for brass quintet and wind band. Alessi returns as soloist on this 2023 release. The complexity of textures involved in that combination suggests that Machain would have no difficulty making Corea’s concerto into one for trombone and wind band, and indeed, his arrangement works quite well, with plenty of contrast between soloist and ensemble. It is quite a fine valedictory work, with hints but not wholesale adoptions of Latin rhythms. Also intriguing and underexposed is Hugo Montenegro’s Fanfare for the New, originally written for Stan Kenton’s Neophonic Orchestra and also arranged for wind band by Machain. Everything comes together here with a certain X factor. The UNLV Wind Orchestra is a top-notch group; even though it is partly composed of undergraduates, it has no trouble matching Alessi for precision, and the young Machain is clearly a rising star in wind band composition. This is likely the band music release of the year.
